Go on, get it all out of your system, you know you want to. [Both sides, I mean].

DG, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New Mortal Kombat answers!

DG, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do we have to? I haven't really got anything interesting to say. At first, amusing (partly cause of the young brother dynamic). Then he just seemed to go overboard with too much attention seeking crap. That 'I R' just comes across as majorly egotistical after a while.

Nick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you can't deny that he is molesworth 2 though. i still have to meet him, and see for myself the "boy of badges"!

katie, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just find it hilarious he's managed to irritate so many people. He's a lovely fellow really!

DG, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely you can't be that surprised he annoyed people? If some random punter had started posting the way he did you'd have been up in arms. The only reason it's "hilarious" is cos he's your brother... a joke I'm not really party to, unfortunately.

Andrew Williams, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you throw eggs at your friend's car and now you declare open season on your own brother, as if he hasn't gotten enough ILE eggs tossed in his direction this week (albeit deservedly). what kind of terrorist training camp did you graduate from, DG?

fritz, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seeing as he titled EVERY thread he started "IRx", why not, er, y'know, just not open those threads, if you don't like being "annoyed"?

mark s, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(DG's mum has a thing for ObL, as I recall)

mark s, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what I'd do. He's not so bad, and there are people who demand attention on this board in much nastier ways than via Fatnick's curious I R thing. People who have met him: does he talk like this in real life?

Dark Eyes, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently so.

Nick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't be up in arms if some 'random punter' started posting like him, I find it quite funny actually. I are childish. But anyway, I thought I'd start this thread so those who've been grumbling on other threads can argue with FN here rather than de-railing other threads, and that goes for him as well. And:
1) I didn't egg a friend's car it was an 'acquiantance's' car, someomone we know and don't like much.
2) My mum did indeed say that OBL had 'nice eyes'.

DG, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of the nice things abt ILM is that generally people drop the running gags at JUST the right time. Perhaps its a habit FatNick will acquire if he spends some more time here.

Andrew L, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's pretty easy to not read the stupid things, I picked up on one cos someone emailed me why I wasn't saying xyz, so I went on the thread and read that someone else had also said it so I said it was because I can't be bothered to read things that are completely unintelligible.

The problem is all the fuckwads who insist on ALSO posting like that all over every thread now. I mean, do we want to all sound like morons? I'm sorry DG, I'm sure your brother's not a moron, but honestly now.

There are some running gags that are funny to a point. There are some running gags that are funny forever. There are some running gags that are never, ever funny. Unfortunately I personally feel that this is one that falls into the last category, and it's enough to make me just stop reading entire threads when too many people start up with it.

Hell, I've been reading ILM more than this place lately anyhow, something I didn't think I'd be saying ever again.

Ally, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R wonsering why everyone is hating me so much! I R only having fun ( R you people being aware of this concept? I R not thinking Chris, Nick, Ally "I don't post anything nice ever" or Andrew "I R sexually assaulting woodland creatures" Williams R!) as Mark S R so nicely stating, all my theads and posts r begining I R, so you R not having to read them. I R also pointing out that DG R having sense of humour, and R not being bothered if somone else R posting in their own dialect. I R originally not talking like this but i R no longer being able to stop.

Also, to all those who R attacking me: J0* $µ[|<0|2 |30|2¡|\|& *|_|] |_4/\/\3|2 84$+4|2|]$!

This R not being Gag. This R being me.

I R fatnick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't say I get overly bothered by Fatnicks posting style or posts. It's unique to him, I guess. I won't be copying it personally. Best wishes.

james, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R not hating you. But equally I R not buying mark s's argument either. I R liking not to have to trawl through ILE for stuff that doesn't bore me. But yeah - I R not really that bothered unless there were a dozen other people doing the same kind of thing.

Nick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R originally not talking like this but i R no longer being able to stop.

That's terrible! It's like the girl who couldn't stop hiccuping.

Nick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"There are some running gags that are funny to a point. There are some running gags that are funny forever. There are some running gags that are never, ever funny."

for jess:

fatnick - funny to a point.

as proven by science - funny forever

paranoid/defensive narcissism - never, ever funny.

your mileage may vary.

(oh, wait! that's the whole point...)

jess, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick's threads are hilarious and frequently the best things on the board.

dan, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but it's a pretty bad board.

Nick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And (thin) Nick has dedicated his life to archiving it!!

mark s, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, and my objection to FatNick is much the same as the British Library's exasperation with having to archive every single edition of Barbara Cartland novels.

Nick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

which is somewhat of a more valid reason than "i'm too smart/cool for the room."

jess, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The point is that one person's idea of having fun is another person's idea of being obnoxious as hell, and you just have to deal with it. I mean, there are certain people on this board who feel that cursing people out for not liking Nate Dogg or something is "funny", supposedly, but that doesn't actually MAKE it fun that the person thinks it's fun, right? Hell, doompatrol thought he was just having fun, and everyone went all up in arms. The idea of "I am just having fun therefore no one should say it's idiotic" is just foreign to me.

Then again, I don't post anything nice, ever, so what do I know, yes?

The main reason that other people doing that I R bullshit bothers me is because it's HORRIBLE AND UNORIGINAL to just read someone else's post and start talking like them.

Ally, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Ally, they just wanna be-longgg.

Nick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Which is an attitude I am wholly against. Be original! If you can't be original, at least don't blatantly copy. I just don't see how, even if you find the I R posts funny, it's funny to just copy them. It's like those people who walk around going "Do I make you horny, baby!" in an Austin Powers voice and expect everyone to laugh, how is carbon copying funny?

Let me reiterate that THAT is my problem with the thing. I have no problem with FatNick personally, seems like a well enough sort, I just have a very difficult time reading anything he posts and therefore have given up trying.

And quite frankly, I think DG is just talking up his brother with this thread; it's not like we've ever had a "Cockfarmer: classic or dud?" or anything like that with any other specific type of posting.

Ally, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bizarre "throwing rocks at the boy you like" obsessions aside...

the difference between the "mystery poster" (or doom patrol for that matter) you speak of ally (ooh how coy) and nick is that...there is absolutely no way, in any sense, that nick can possibly be seen as attacking or provoking anyone. he's not screaming, rarely cursing (certainly not *at* anyone), and generally a very agreeable chap.

jess, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I personally see a blatant co-opting of other persons trademark terms or speech as a sign of affection when used sparingly.

Samantha, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

someday i hope to be a wholly original human being. (of course then i'll probably be pissing all over myself in an alley, talking about the "electric brain banana.")

(cue ally: blah blah that's not my point, copying someone outright is diff'rent than...)

and since when does il* have to have the hushed reverence of a lecture hall? do threads about anal sex and bowling really deserve a critical eye towards syntax and "originality"?

jess, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's just annoying, I'm sorry you have such a big problem with someone finding something you don't find annoying annoying. I've said like two things about it til now, fuck you.

Ally, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, that's sort of my point ally. (as you already figured out.) i don't give a rats ass if you don't like it. i don't give a rats ass if you give or don't give a rats ass that i don't give a rats ass. which i suppose makes my above comments redundant (and invokes a lot of rodent posteriors,) but still needs to be said (i think.) people are waaaaaay too comfortable around here lobbing stones in the arboretum; commenting on others "originality" tears a page straight from the bell of sixth period 10th grade study hall, inbetween scribbling obscure band names all over your notebook.

or maybe i just have a thing for you.

(that was for the fuck you. being petty is fun...wheeeeeeee.)

jess, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Today the mantle of crankiness has been passed on. GO FORTH AND FUCKING PISS EACH OTHER OFF.

Ronan, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Reduce it to this:

GO FORTH FUCKING

...apply it to all of us, and we have a plan.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R truelly happy there are so many people sticking up for me! thaaaaank you! :D

I R fatnick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

erm yes:
1: I still haven't opened half the Fatnick threads, and probly never will.
2: I began "i R"-ing as a fairly unthought kneejerk when he first started getting what struck me as pretty mean-spirited flak for such an obviously amiable and non-mean fellow. Kind of "I R Spartacus", if that makes sense.
3: Imitation = friendly empathy sometimes? Plus also I mark s have a known magpie problem viz I love economical solutions of expressed tone = the quick way to the desired atmosphere or twang , and glom on w/o even entirely being aware.
4: And plus also as well: I suspect and surely believe that if I didn't magpie quite a lot I wd be a ton MORE incomprehensible. And who wants that?

Beside if I stop now it looks like I'm frightened of Ally. But if I carry on, she might call me "cowboy".

mark s, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fatnick is not annoying. he is just an easy target for some. imitating someone else is, like samantha said, a sign of affection. i like fatnick. and as for it being "horrible and unoriginal", i dare you to find anyone here who HAS said something original.

di, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think FatNick's posts are amusing.

The imitation of Fatnick's posting style is , in my opinion, not that intrusive.

Why does the fixation (OK thats being hyperbolic) with people behaving in a mature manner keep surfacing? If I wanted to be upbraided for my juvenile behavior and latrine humour I could have bought 'Net Nanny'

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i re njoying fat nix post s- that iz scary....

Geoff, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R now sending and recieving text messages that say: I R NEEDING U. I R @ SKOOL - WHER R U?

rainy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I R thinking "be original" is totally unoriginal.

I R fatnick, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

damn right.

di, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>>The point is that one person's idea of having fun is another person's idea of being obnoxious as hell, and you just have to deal with it.

take your own advice then ally and stop whinging.

di, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

quite. i think that fatnick is a nice guy and despite using a mode of expression that some find irksome, has never said anything really heartless or offensive, unlike ally, who is often both heartless and offensive it seems to me.

katie, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love everything.

Nick, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yay!

duane, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fixation with people behaving in mature manner = people not "old" enough to realize that maturity has nothing to do with anything. i.e. my mother passing me in the invisible joint and trying to sing along with beenie man in the auto the other day. my mother delivering report to fussy fat whitemen stockholders (without resulting to I.R.s or yardie talk.) the two things = incongruous? methinks not.

mark's right that if he and/or fatnick stop now, it would be a. very, very odd and b. a cop to the squares. fight the power kids.

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shut up granddad. I never said (did anyone?) that finding the I R schtick just a little annoying after a while had anyhing to do with FatNick being immature. Why do you and he keep saying this?

Nick, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i didn't think i was even talking about you, nick. but c'est la vie.

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jess r thinking that di made a related yet broader point about a (sorta, kinda) il* trend. jess r thinking that he answered it. i r thinking that this schtick actually requires quite a bit of work to keep up.

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whoops, that should be menelaus (just so no one thinks this should go in the "il*ers you think are the same person" thread.)

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Fatnick but isn't the "I R" stuff just the same as any of the other defence mechanisms people (including most of us here) use, only perhaps in a more humorous and silly way. What I'd like to see is the Fatnick behind the laughter. A This Is Your Life type thing.

I think it's funny that what would have seemed like such an innocent attitude and a way of NOT offending anyone or starting arguments, has had the opposite effect.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

people = liking to be offended and indignant, whether they admit it or not, no and forever and ever, amen.

argumentative people (aka ILE) = finding something to start arguments about, even if they have to work at it.

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ILE has the mix of the two and thats the problem.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have just seen the new wire, with TWO letters defending Attali against my heresy of a few issues back. Heh. Am preparing the MOTHER OF ALL demolitions in response, to make ILE look like, er, something nice.

Which fundamentally I think it is, oddly enough. But communities in tension — and thanks a lot World Political Situation for helping with that — tend to seek and find lightning rods, and to vent spleen via marginal rather than central issues, because small splits and feuds deflect worry from possible genuine deep stuff.

Anyone who has heard of the hapless academic who wrote the second letter — don't help him google, at least not yet — and has reason to fuel my ire (or actually also stick up for him: he is nice to his old mum and alwauys buys the big issue) be my guest.

mark s, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

("MOTHER OF ALL demolitions": erm, yeah — not the happiest choice of metaphors at the current time, sorry about that)

mark s, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in any event markus, i'm anxiously awaiting it. (are the letters in the issue with j. o'rourke on the cover?)

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yup

mark s, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i is wanting to see fatnick baby nude phots.

Geoff, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He was a MONSTROUS baby, believe me.

DG, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i r shudderng at the mere thought.

katie, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

when does anyone ever show the "real them" behind their defence mechanisms and facades? its all a series of role plays and masks. It's one of those phrases that get on my nerves as it is generally used in conjunction with the 'you should not be cynical' train of thought. I'm quite happy to look at what people are projecting here and try to figure out what they are really thinking from what they do and don't type.

FatNick, put on some weight or change your name :)

Menelaus Darcy, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I R never knowing this d00d.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 29 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

1) I R forgetting what FatNick used to get up to

2) I R having to put up with this sort of thing every day for nearly 20 years now, pity me (heh)
