be this the thread where people might like to arrange the congregating of peoples for watching international football whilst guzzling beverages?

yes

what are people's favourite pubs to watch football in in London?

is anyone keen on the idea of booking rooms in bars to watch games (provided there enough of us of course) because i get a bit narked with this craning your head around a 300lb gorilla to watch Heskey win the ball in the air then lose it on the ground all in glorious PostageStampVision? i wouldn't know much about this tho, and yes it is organised fun thus evil, but still an idea

so i will be up for watching any matches with anyone in whatever decent venues may be suggested below...

The apple tree was a good one for the world cup, but it's going to be undergoing another revamp next week, and be 'lighter and airier' so I can't vouch for it. It would probably be good for saturday games, but I didn't go last time you all went to watch a game there.

They've changed the opening hours too, it's only open til 11pm mon - wed, and 12.30 thurs and fri. boo.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuckfuckfuck I have just paid attention to the actual fixture list for the first time and the tournament begins on the day I move house. This is going to require military planning.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

watching Turkey v England was very good, nice and relaxed, unlike that time we watched Macedonia v England - Sorovia maybe not wise for these shenanigans. A big screen in the park would be fun/nightmarish KL

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I CAN'T BELIEVE I PICKED THIS OF ALL WEEKENDS TO MOVE. IDIOT MATT DC!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

at least you're not moving on Wednesday 23 June

(God I hope we can watch the Quarter Finals at Glasto)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I may want to watch this at home, not surethough, we need to find a venue that feels lucky.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Like Wembley Stadium?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

possibly, yes. I would be handy for work too

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to co-arrange a kickabout in the park on either the Saturday or Sunday (12th/13th)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

This seems the most convenient place to mention that Bravo apparently have Brazil vs. Argentina on tomorrow evening! That's a top quality match!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey - Brazil won 3-1 with THREE Ronaldo penalties. Brilliant.

Copa America straight after E2004 = best summer ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Bravo??! i hope it doesn't intrude on Porn Legends or whatever they usually show

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i am keen. although not keen enough to have actually looked at the fixtures list yet or anything. when does it start?!

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

a week on Saturday

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a nasty chain pub and the staff are grim, but O'Neills in Muswell Hill (Highgate Tube + 5 mins bus / 15 mins nice walk) is very good for football. Stacks of screens and very well-attended, including decent foreign representation, e.g. a bunch of Barcelona fans in when their team plays, etc etc.

OK, it's also very near my house.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 3 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds potentially good for the North London ILX mafia at least (woo)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I know that o'neills - no chance, although I watched england lose to France in the John Logie baird round the corner (oh no - unlucky pub = no way!)

I'm watching the France game at home methinks

chris (chris), Thursday, 3 June 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I got slung out of the John Baird the other day for daring to inquire if they might show Iceland v Japan. [paraphrasing] 'Can't you see they're watching Formula One? They got here first. Besides, Iceland against fucking Japan?'

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Thursday, 3 June 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I second O'Neills in Muzzy Hill, also principally for proximity-to-own-bedroom reasons.

darren (darren), Saturday, 12 June 2004 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm planning on watching all the live games (i.e. I have to settle for highlights for one of each final pair of group games, otherwise everything), so will be knocking off work early next week. This will not need to be so early (I have to work my hours somehow anyway) if I watch some in town. Anyone fancy a central meet for any 5pm games this week? I work halfway up Tottenham Court Road, so somewhere much quicker to get to than home (Tottenham) would appeal, like a 5-10 minute walk away.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 June 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago)

i don't get out of work til 6 at the earliest and we're v busy at the mo so usually later.

still, Bull & Mouth on Tuesday for the Group D games yes?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 14 June 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago)

or that Dutch pub?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 14 June 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

where is this Bull & Mouth?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 14 June 2004 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Bloomsbury Road.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 14 June 2004 11:58 (twenty years ago)

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub297.htm

room upstairs with big screen, seating a bit odd (too many tables) but not too bad.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I work in Tott Court Road, almost opposite the Dominion, so the Bull and Mouth for Huns vs Hups would be perfekne.

darren (darren), Monday, 14 June 2004 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I could get there for 5pm - anyone else up for an early start?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

No one else up for the early game? I'm quite keen to see the Czech Republic, personally - especially since they are playing Latvia and I have three Czechs in my fantasy team.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 07:45 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to, but have flat things to attend to. Dammit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Wow - there's a Bull & Muth expedition NOT featuring me or the Nipper!!

the junefox, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 08:10 (twenty years ago)

Well, if there is no one getting there early, I think I shall go home instead and watch it there - I may not get the chance to check here again this afternoon. Anyone interested in an early start Thursday or Friday? (I have to be home early on Wednesday for other reasons.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 10:52 (twenty years ago)

looks like people are scattering for tonight's games, oh well. i can't make any pub 7.30 at the earliest, i may even only catch the second half at this rate.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:31 (twenty years ago)

MONDAY NIGHT - WHERE?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:20 (twenty years ago)

good question steve.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

After last night I refuse to watch any more England games in a pub.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking Croatia may be a game to watch at home also.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:28 (twenty years ago)

huh? matt i am confused. did you watch the first game in the pub and last night's at home, or did you have a bad experience in the pub last night?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:38 (twenty years ago)

or the experience is so good that you're experiencing ruin

(wot happened to me)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:46 (twenty years ago)

I watched both games in the pub - its just the pub was absolutely rammed with utter cockfarmers talking nonsense with authority. And singing "one-nil to the Arsenal" after Rooney's goal, which was just bizarre. Admittedly, it was a Pitcher and Piano...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:46 (twenty years ago)

that's not a pub, it's a circle of hell...

...i quite like watching england games at home to be honest

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:48 (twenty years ago)

people at the prince of wales feathers on warren street were more otm as they changed the word "arsenal" to "en gl and"

and then sang 1-0 to the arsenal when france scored.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:49 (twenty years ago)

haha, although having said that, meg has pointed out to me that i now shout at the telly a lot more than when i wasn't going to lots of real actual footie matches, so maybe she would prefer that i was in the pub :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm watching it at a friends, I think, he has a huge telly and lots of snackage and there will probably be about 8-10 of us there - ideal footy-watching circumstances, in other words.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:50 (twenty years ago)

There was a guy with a drum in the pub yesterday. Nightmare.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:57 (twenty years ago)

i give up then ;) actually thinking about it a comfortable house (not my own) DOES seem the ideal place to watch the drama unfold.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 June 2004 09:59 (twenty years ago)

jesus, there is no need for that sort of behaviour...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago)

(drumming in pubs, not steve trying to skank round other people's houses)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago)

I am still up for watching Dutch vs Czechs in an ORANJ PUB mind.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:01 (twenty years ago)

i suppose my dilemma is i really want to see this sort of thing with a big bunch of people i know and like, so you tend to think pub because i couldn't actually get that watching it at my house unless i invited a bunch of people round which is totally unfeasible and unappealing all things considered.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:01 (twenty years ago)

And someone was singing 'no surrender to the IRA'. I think they were American though. Tax issues.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 18 June 2004 10:02 (twenty years ago)

I have a reasonable sized living room, and I also think that in a house with a bunch of friends is the perfect football-viewing experience. Drawback: I live in Tottenham. If anyone fancies coming round to mine, email me.

I find watching England games in pubs unappealing. There are enough annoying people anyway (an Australian behind me kept saying how much he hates "that cunt Pianucci" and reciting what he thought was all the teams he had played for (he omitted Milan) over and over again - "Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Monaco - and he's shit!"), but it gets a lot worse for England games. It's unbearable when the xenophobia gets going too - I don't suppose it was bad for Switzerland, but Croatia might get a few people going.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 June 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago)

i fear i would have been pissed off with myself in the pub the other night - the guy in front of us was ("lads - shut up and enjoy the victory".) we were having a lengthy discussion about the mathematical possibilities for qualifications from various groups. oh dear.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 19 June 2004 13:52 (twenty years ago)

ha, your sophisticated equations were too powerful for his feeble brane

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 June 2004 09:16 (twenty years ago)

Looks probable that I'll be in town on Tuesday too late to get home for the match. Anyone fancy meeting in a pub to watch? I guess it'll be Italy-Bulgaria showing rather than Sweden-Denmark, but I could be wrong.
