The pig and whistle pub got a new pub sign. But the landlord was not pleased, as the words' spacing was all wrong.

"There's too much space between 'Pig' and 'And', and 'And' and 'Whistle'."

If he was a Cockney landlord he might comment:

"I can get me 'and between the and and the words around it, there's so much space! It goes Pig and 'and and and and 'and and Whistle!"

If you accept that buffalo which come from Buffalo, NY are called Buffalo buffalo, and if you accept that there exists a verb, "to buffalo", and you would like to mention that bison from upstate NY which are buffaloed by other bison, frequently buffalo yet further bison, then you would pronounce:

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo, buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 27 May 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo, buffalo Buffalo buffalo. NY.

The "AND" operator is unnecessary -- we include all search terms by default.

curses...

still:
Wouldn't the sentence "I want to put a hyphen between the words Fish and And and And and Chips in my Fish-And-Chips sign" have been clearer if quotation marks had been placed before Fish, and between Fish and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and Chips, as well as after?

Martin Gardner died last weekend, aged 95. He wrote the original "Fish and and, and and and "And"..." sentence, using "and" 21 times in a row. The Language Log thread comments include an expansion of that sentence to "and" 71 times in a row.

First time I came across the Buffalo buffalo was on this thread. Took me a solid 20 minutes. The Cockney with the Hand and Androgynous Goat example is brilliant.

Mice cats chase eat cheese. (Mice, that are chased by cats, eat cheese.)

Dogs dogs dog dog dogs. (Dogs, that are dogged by dogs, dog other dogs)

Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo. (Buffalo, that are buffaloed by buffalo, buffalo other buffalo.)

then add the extra Buffalo-NY

Buffalo-NY buffalo, Buffalo-NY buffalo buffalo, buffalo Buffalo-NY buffalo

and so

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo

i've just gone a bit mental

So, the singer Fish from Marillion, who didn't like to fish, decided to fish anyway, but just to prove he had, would take pictures of the fish that he had fished for onto microfiche format (which is spelled mikrofish in Hungarian, or fish for short).
