...and concludes that it is a war about Islam, but specifically as he puts it a war against 'Islamists.' Samuel Huntington gets at least partially trashed along the way. Thoughts?

"But I wanted then to ask a question which is no less important now: suppose we say that the ills of our societies are not primarily America's fault - that we are to blame for our own failings? How would we understand them then? Might we not, by accepting our own responsibility for our problems, begin to learn to solve them for ourselves?"

Oh, did you want to ask that question, Salman? How nicely you posed it.

Problem is the problems are caused by the imperial-capitalists. So the solution, the solution you prescribe, Salman, is folly.

Let me ask you a question, Salman:

Suppose we all just admit that the pigs were already planning to feed at the trough... already planning to make war on Afghanistan? Already determined to go over there and take, and shape and control... Suppose we came right out and admitted that, Salman, and the we said ... "YEAH, BUT"...

Would that make us "absurd"? "Self-exculpatory"?

Would we rest assured that this tact would have "widespread appeal".

YEAH, BUT...

Propaganda conspiracy theory - somebody 'kindly suggested' Rushdie about the huge debt he piled up with public money for security, and reminded him of his current low popularity standing. Or maybe he felt the debt himself?

FWIW I want to position myself as far away as it's possible to be from Ergo's post. Thanx.

However, Mr. Rushdie is not even close to being a popular writer and knowing his status in the Muslim world, awards like this definitely increases the gap between the West and the Islamic world.

Oh, boo hoo, cry babies
