Tonight, I R playing pool with my friends, as is custom. Me and my friend Mark R discussing state of world. He R blaming whole situation on religion of islam. He R saying he R having sen extracts of Koran on the internet, and have decided it is thouroughly evil. I R trying to point out that most religions can be interpreted in many different ways, a military minded person picking out and defining a religion by the more violent aspects for example, but he R ignoring this. I R wondering, are there other people who R righting off whole religions, or is this guy just a moron?

I R trying to be sensible!, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

more foolish friend answers!

I R fatnick, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i. there are plenty of ppl at any given moment writing off entire other religions, and also ppl writing off x-tianity, and marxism, and soulless materialism, and technology, and just stuff
ii. many of them R, er, are also morons: tho some of them are considered clever and important; and some are probably smart and on the money

mark s, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

<rolleyes>As a Muslim myself I must curse this moron as a blaspheming infidel and demand his immediate execution. It says so in my Koran</rolleyes>

Kodanshi, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah he's definitely a moron. the question is whether morons = everyday people. i have erred on the side of pessimism in the past i think but at the moment i'd put the moron/everyday peeps crossover percentile at, ummm probably up to 65% of 'everyday' ppl are not morons.

Atheism rocks! That way nobody's religion is accorded respect over and above anyone else's as is all old wives' tales/bunkum/myth/peasant control.

suzy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he is a moron, but unfortunately most people in the world are moron.

Religion becomes evil at the point that practitioners start trying to convert me. Especially when I am minding my own business and don't want to hear their easy steps towards spiritual enlightenment and inner well-being. Yes, midnight is the hour of the spiritual hippy conversions...

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

don't listen to them fatnick, you don't have to post sensible stuff all the time if you don't want to. don't let them get to you, just be yourself, you have plenty enough devoted fans around here who like you for being who you are.

I was once chased through the dunedin public gardens by a set of Jehovas Witnesses hungry for a convert. They started yelling at me and cornered me at a bottleneck dammit. Those individuals were Morons

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some jehovah's witnesses tried to pay me out once: "nice sunglasses," said they sarcastically, because i told them i didn't want to accept the Lord into my life. they were imitation jackie-o style sunnies. the moral of the story is: jo-ho's have crap taste in beliefs and in sunglasses.

di, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it when people try to convert me.

Maria, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do you like it?

I'm almost rabidly anti random conversions because most pf my experiences have involved a gross imposition and violation of my privacy. The attempts are usually made with some form of transparent manipulation or playing on a weakness. For instance the Hare Krishna's always asking if you are a local. If you are out of town you might need friends... they also latch onto people who are younger to take advantage of any emotional crises that might be happening for them.

Most of the people who have tried to convert me have little knowledge of what they are talking about- I can't really level that at Hare Krishnas so much, having read only one book though philosophically speaking it was crap. The benefits must arise fromsome kind of epiphany rather than logic. Christians however, at least the ones who accost me, don't seem to have a clue about the text of the bible. Their definite opinions make it difficult for them to actually argue a point coherently. What it basically comes down to is I resent people telling me I am living my life the wrong way and that they are right. And if I alienate them by refusing to join the church, well they can smile and say 'you look inflammable...'

Odious as the thought is I should put in a disclaimer. These people accosted me, and do so disturbingly often. Its that particular behaviour that upsets me, not their religion.

I've listed the bad points I can find- what are the good parts?

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi fatnick :) In my simple humble opinion, it is not Religion per say that is at fault so much as it is man's lust for power and to controle others, which I do not believe God had in mind. Yet in some Religions people kill each other, not that the crimes are unforgivable but these people want total control, and do what they please. As we know in the Bible there is a commandment that expresses : Thou Shalt NOT kill. Is this for a chosen few? I think it is for everyone on earth. God is Love NOT hate! To me,it doesn't matter if people have different Religions for sure because this place would be a very boring place indeed if everyone was the same. I don't believe one must go to church every week to believe in the Lord. I can say for myself though that he is with me at all times. This is my opinion fatnick. Gale

The Silly fool R also dumpig a traffic cone on my doorstep last night and thinking it R really funny. I R taking brisk early morning stroll and returning the favour.

Grr it R worrying me that people could be so biggoted and stupid. He R saying "I R hating religion, but i think the world would be better off if everyone r being christian" even tho we R studying last year how easy it is to convert christianity into Military force (crusading 1096-1200). He R being a Buffoon.

I R liking people trying to convert me. It R being very funny. Though I R never coming across scary jehovas witnesses like u have in new zealand! I R thinking maybe they R having more luck if they R offering amusic badges/Tshirts...Like an "I R with dummy tshirt, with the arrow pointing upwards." I R would consider joining religion to get one of those.

I R silly fatnick, but I R meaning i have sensible views towards other people., Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the more i read of gale's posts the more i like her and salute her. her interpretation of christianity is, to my mind, one that would save a whole lot of crap going on if only everyone would adopt it. the "thou shall not kill" thing is one of the main reasons i'm an athiest (not that i want to kill anyone, but the whole hypocrisy thing that often goes hand in hand with religion is just one of the reasons i turned against religion... also that i dont like being preached to by a huge patriarchal so-called authority, i get enough of that in my daily life thankyou very much). gale is a Reasonable CHristian though, and i don't meet many of those. so thank you gale! :)

In case anyone's wondering about FN's email address up there, it's cos we have a cookie installed which defaults to the 'rgreenfield' address. He isn't me, and I am not him.
