ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i got my first pair last summer. hot pink/black/checkerboard luella bartley edition. they look sweet but hurt my ankles, oh my.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to have a great two-tone brown & beige pair!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never had a pair but I might rectify this soon.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

of Vans, that is.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

mostly black, 1998.
i was going to start a thread about vans today¡¡¡ i just went and bought some new vans after a painful winter wearing shitty, shitty sketchers. never again.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was more of a Duffs man myself.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

black and white check slip ons when i was in 8th grade and started skating. posers!

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

also good to see you didn't lame out last night, ddb.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

LAMER.

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

4 years ago? I can't remember what they looked like. I kinda want some old school 60's style Vans.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(i lamed out. i couldn't resist the siren song of blackened tofu tacos. was it fun?)

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it was fun but the free beer wasn't cold enough! I understand your taco dilemma though. Also Keith Rowe/Fennesz fucking RULED dudes! See ya at Tono-Bungay tonight, bungholes!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I should have went to Fennesz..instead I ate Hummus at Black Betty. I'm a LAMER.

ANYWAY:
I AM ADDICTED TO VANS...my closet is full of them.

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

dude the line almost stretched to Delancey! You couldn't get in cause you aren't a cool guestlist dude LIKE ME! HAHAHAHAHA! *coughs*

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

GUEST BOOK LAMER.

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

1978 (I think)! I used to live right near the factory or something in Anaheim. They may have been navy blue.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 28 May 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Josh wins.

Did you skate back then too?

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i have only had black old skools ever since i mail-ordered for them back in the early 80s. i've had over 10 pairs (currently 3 pairs that still fit, including the rowley models). ddb, i was wearing a pair when i met you i think!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Black and white checkered slip-ons, 6th grade I think, '84? Those were my only pair, ever, sadly. I wore them with OP shorts. Oh no, wait, I have navy blue lace-ups with a swipe, that I got about 3 years ago, but those aren't so iconic as the original pair, and I think I may have thrown them out anyway.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This is ridiculous. A much better idea would be to sell white canvas shoes and a set of coloured marking pens. When you want a new design, wash the shoes and start over.

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

WHITE ON BLACK OLD SCHOOLS

I am wearing them right now. In fact, one of my coworkers just commented on them. Positively.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Friday, 28 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

aimless, have you seen the geoff mcfettridge dunks?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't rightly say I have. Although they may have spent some time dangling below my nose. I tend not to notice such things.

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

-- Aimless (aimles...), May 28th, 2004.

while we're at it, lets scrap this whole internet thing and become penpals, fuckface.

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Never owned Vans. Not against them at this point - although skaters always kind of annoyed me when I was a kid. Maybe I'll pick some white ones up and do some Ollie Impossibles or the RV Special.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember if they were Vans or Vision Streetware, but I had shoes that said "rad" on them. They were rad.

My friend Jeremy has these special editions that are amazing, they have this like, thatched texture.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 28 May 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ddb, let us recapitulate the plot line of Love For Three Oranges. Just you and me. In the alley. Bro.

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 28 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

...with extreme prejudice!!!

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 28 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, ddb, you and I had the same style, same year -- but I traded up to neon green/black high tops the next year. Only two pairs I ever owned. I was the shittiest skater ever, but damn it, I tried my best.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 28 May 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I had Visions too, they sucked.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i owned a pair of vans for one day. after i realized that my fred flintstone feet were no match for their narrow fury.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 28 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Aimless, I picture you wearing a headband.

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread inspired me to wear my vans and they got soaked. the pink bits are gonna be all grimy-looking now. ugh.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(lauren, put them in a washing machine with very little detergent and air-dry)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, g!. i can always count on you.

ps - come back soon so we can get sushi.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i am trying to work something out, let me know if anything spectacular/no-miss is going on. should i ask SELZER for long-term planning advice?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ask RUSS instead, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

very very true (HI RUSS!)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Make that an ugly headband. Truly hideous.

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God. I had to by "brightly-colored shoes" for a production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" I did in high school, so I bought some PASTEL MINT AND SALMON-COLORED Vans.

I really wish I could go back 16 years and shake myself.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome Hurlothrumbo....sometimes I think I dreamt them. Vision Street Wear was sorta cool...I had a pair of those, marble notebook style.

RE: VSW))))))Ray Barbee to thread.(((((((

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Visions had a tendency to wear out really quickly due to shoddy construction and materials. Much like their skateboards! (I had a Grigley)

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

my mom never let me get visions because she thought they were too masculine. she got me turquoise reebok hightops instead.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 May 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

close to twenty years ago, all black i think. i was a horrible skater, but skating is only part of it anyways. writing 'the vandals' on the bottom of the sneakers was U&K

kephm, Friday, 28 May 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

what ever happened to tretorn ???

kephm, Friday, 28 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Vision boards were pretty hot 86-87.

I had:
Marty "Jinx" Jimenez, Mark Gonzales First and one with a guy with flowers drawn, Gator and my very first real board; A Vision Pscho Stick.

Get Gnar.

ddb, Friday, 28 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

tretorns were so wimpy! the girly-girls wore them with little pom-pom ankle socks that complemented the swoosh color.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 May 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, you're other post just remnded me of them.

kephm, Friday, 28 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

also, my mom wore them to play tennis which in this day and age of specialized athletic shoes mystifies me. how did she not break an ankle?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 May 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

PSYCHO STIX!!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 28 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

1995. They were black suede with different shades of brown along the sides. Look, this is them (me on the left). Vans are without a doubt the stinkiest of trainers. This was the only pair I ever bought.

Madchen (Madchen), Saturday, 29 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I had lots of Tretorns throughout junior high. White on white was my favorite color combination: they looked nice with very tight, side-zippered Guess jeans (I thought at the time).

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 29 May 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

ah well, at least it's timely--this year is vans' 40th anniversary. Cool timeline at vans40.com.
