Regret buying sprees? Are you nuts? Why, I can't wait for that ridiculous tax refund check to arrive from the Feds, as I'll set aside its $300 entirety for a run to the LA Amoeba Records when it opens. Viva!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I never really regret spending sprees, I use that old accounting trick of sunk costs therefore making me feel like I hadn't actually spent anything.

THREAD MUTATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Caramel, peanuts, chocolate and nougat...C OR D?

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

On time whe I was in San Francisco, I bought 22 old license plates for 5$ piece. I don't know why I did it, but I regret it. I did get a cool cable car bell though, so it wasn't a total loss.

Fifty beans? What a pussy...

: )

JM, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

caramel, nougat, chocolate - classic, peanuts - for fuckin monkeys. "Silver Apples Of The Moon" - classic, "Sonic Seasonings" - zzzzz. Spending ridiculous amounts of money on dumm crap - classic if someone else does it, bummer if I did it myself.

Most puzzling one, two years back I bought a whole bunch of wrestling figurines (whole bunch = TONS + hooj ring w/ scaffolding & sound effects) and I THINK WRESTLING IS CRAP. Bought 'em (I guess) for kitsch-ironic-mantlepiece value which makes me a CUNT (as per tvgohome). They now reside in box at base of wardrope. Prolly $400 dropped. Ptooey!!

AP, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

do monkey's eat peanuts even when they're not fucking?

maryann, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

oh GOD! I am so eternally sorry for that apostrophe.

maryann, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Caramel, peanuts, chocolate and nougat" = Mars bar? All good ingredients. I don't much like caramel-as-toffee, though - ptooey! - but caramel milkshakes = bliss. Do monkeys ever slip on banana peels?

AP, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Is peanuts in Mars? Marathon?

Greg, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Was Marathon, now Snickers. Worst choc bar / sweetie name-change EVAH. Except, perhaps, for Opal Fruits becoming Starburst.

Anyone ever see that Eddie Izzard thing about Caesar the Roman Emperor changing his name to 'Mr Dog'?

Paul Strange, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I had a Mr Dog salad last night.

Wait, no. That didn't come out the way I intended....

Can we stop talking about monkeys and go back to talking about CD buying sprees? I finally had one last week. For the first time in something like 4 months. The first time I bought ANY CDs in 4 months, cause of my unemployment. I came home with 11. God bless the HMV cheapy sale.

What was weird was... I don't know if that was just what HMV was having the sale on, or if that was just what I bought, but almost all of them were on WEA. Spooky...?

masonic boom, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

WEA?

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

WEA orginally stood for Warner, Elektra and Atlantic Records. Time Warner's distribution arm.

Nick, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'v e heard good things about ELektra. They work well with artists.

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Bought over 200$ worth from Amoeba once. Just once. They gave me a free back. Kewl.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm terrible for buying things on a whim - currently I'm after a theremin. Why? Why not? See what I mean? And does anybody know where I can get one that doesn't cost that much?

DG, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My friend is making a theremin ona breadboard. He's not doing such a good job yet... lotsa scratchy static is all that comes out.

Last night I dreamed that I bought a violin. It was great, it had all kinds of extra strings. I remember talking to the bloke at the store about why I wanted to play violin, and I started out with the whole malarchy about how I played when I was a kid, but then he saw right through that and said "nah, it's cause you think you're in the Velvet Underground" and started pulling all these zany violins out of the case (a Scottish violin that was half bagpipe and stuff) and I bought this interesting indian violin with dozens of resonating strings like a sitar. It was cool. I wish I'd bought it in real life.

three months pass...
Advice needed. I have saved up babysitting money and now have $120. Do I blow it all on a nice black wool coat so I can wear something with all my skirts that doesn't make me look like a marshmallow, do I buy assorted books and CDs with it, or do I save it for a trip or something?

Maria, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, is there anywhere you want to go?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

everywhere?

Maria, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hmm...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

buy the coat. "A black wool coat will take you everywhere."

rainy, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Definitely the coat. I'm all about spending a lot on one thing rather than piddling it away on little things.

Nick, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

see if you can get a coat for 100 dollars and then have twenty left for records yay!! i spent far far too much money on records the other day but i don't CARE. when i go on a shopping spree i can't afford i feel like the world can kiss my ASS. i've never bought anything really hella stoopid though. not anything expensive anyway. i am now going to buy another 2 records and more stripey socks so see you laters kids!

six years pass...

i got some. what turntable should i buy? someone give me good recs, cuz i have no idea about it. playable at home, playaboue out, <$300

?????

strgn, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I bought a Project Debut turntable for about $300 and it works fine except I find it annoying for two reasons:

1) Just to change the speed, I have to literally lift the entire heavy base of the platter up and place the belt on a different setting with my finger. People who make turntables without a BUTTON of some kind on the front to change the speed are fucking crazy.

2) There is no way to adjust the anti-skate either.

You should check ILM though, cause there are a lot of turntable threads there that may be more helpful to you.
