is what Baadasssss! should have been named, if the review I just read was accuate abt it being the original title - but, will someone please watch this and let me know how it is?

and perhaps Mario Van Peebles' career as actor and direcor can be debated in the meanwhile.

it occurs to me that i have respect for him, but for the life of me i don't know why. i guess Posse was pretty cool. he seems like a good guy.

This was pretty good. A few flaws - they build up some dramatic situations and then just resolve them with a "and then I got through it," the guy who plays Bill Cosby does the worst Cosby impression ever, the Black Panther backing is underplayed. The best part might have been the interviews with the real people as the credits roll.

Quite a lot of naked boobage and '70s bush, don't take your kids.

Anyone seen the original Sweet Sweetback movie? Is it worth finding?

I saw it once while in college but was way too fucked up to form an impression of it.

I remember liking Sonny Spoon. I was young and impressionable then though.

The soundtrack at least *is* worth finding.

eight months pass...
I finally got around to seeing Baadasssss!

Pretty lousy film, unfortunately. Everything was overexplained and emotionally underrealized. Van Peebles turns in a very convincing performance as his dad though, and it is at least worth watching to get the story behind the film.

As for Sweet Sweetback's, yes, it's definitely worth seeing. Odd mix of artfilm, porn, and b-movie action, and continues to be both striking and discomforting today.
