Seductive clothing -- pulling a Mae West

Triggered by a similar discussion last night at a work-related party/celebration....

Do you find seductive clothing seductive? If so, why? If not, why not?

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You always looked good in that one silk nightie, Brian, so I guess it can work.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't, personally. Somehow, the idea of someone putting on an arsenal of leather, fishnets, what have you for the specific purpose of trying to turn me on ends up doing the opposite.

Not sure why. But to me, it's the equivalent of putting a clown suit on. (For the record, no, I don't find clowns sexy.. sorry, Dan). It completely obfuscates and distorts the very meat of the matter that is the center and end results of seduction. Also, girls putting on a Mae West or mystical seductive gypsy act achieves the same level of turned-off-ness for me... Maybe this is somewhat analogous to the make-up issue..

Casual just-before-bed clothes is far more exciting to me, as I can immediately visualize what's right underneath it. Maybe it's my lack of excitement over expensive fashion in general that's to blame?

Anyway, this all does NOT mean I think lower of people who do adorn themselves in "sexy" clothes, excessive make-up, etc.... the context here is just that moment of hormonal intrigue.

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seductive clothing is not just very subtle, I prefer things to be understated. More hinted at, less overt.

james, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree completely with what you say Brian.

I find just normal stuff sexy. Normal clothing is much more seductive than some crazy outfit or something outrageous.

None of this brazen hussy stuff for me, perhaps it's my catholicism coming through. Er.....maybe not.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fetish clothes just look stupid to me. Not sexy at all. Amusing, sometimes, though. Like some 60-year-old leather bear's hairy ass sticking out of his chaps, what a riot. Or when they go all borg, with tubes and catheter's a-popping.

That West Hollywood circuit clone sleeveless muscle T look isn't even funny.

I like boring. Boring is sexy.

Arthur, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud, seductive clothing is just cheating, anyone can do it (maybe). Other possible explanation: It's pretty unlikely it's me they're dressing up for, hence I feel no personal response.

The rowrist girl at The Lollies last night was wearing a completely shapeless high-neckline shin-length floral dress.

Graham, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

shouldn't that be boring is the NEW sexy? ;)

but yes, boring is sexy. casual is sexy. gimme the just outta bed hair anyday. rowr.

speaking of clowns...

circa 1982...ex-girlfriend's brother takes 11 or 12 year old-self to see flock of seagulls, riding high on the strength of "i ran." visiting bizzarre coiffed lead singer backstage, he opens his dressingroom door BUCK NAKED, scarring her small memory for life. (and has a small willie.) 1989 or 90...flock of seagulls is playing campus pizza parlor at kent state, and for a larf, same ex goes to see them, wearing, among other things, a big vinyl heart ala a goth flava flav. they plow through their hits, workman-like, and during the set she passes same coiffed weirdo a note which reads "i've got a heart-on for you." after the show, they chat, her enjoying the evil irony a bit more than the more honestly enthused he. he wants to hang out with her and she agrees. friends are wary, but she waves them off. in his car, he wants her to go back to his hotel, but she declines. instead they have coffee at local diner. afterwards (sometime after midnight) they are driving around looking for "fun" (in ohio.) he asks if there are any costume shops around. she says she doesnt know. after some prying and cajoling and erosion of fear, it comes forth that he wants her to wear a CLOWN SUIT to perform WANTON AND CARNAL ACTS ON HIM. she promptly vacates the premises.

CLOWNS AND SEX...JUST SAY NO, KIDS.

but maybe women aren't wearing so-called seductive clothing to allure men. maybe women wear seductive clothing because its so over the top and ridiculous, cos its fun to look like a tranny. when i wear seductive clothing, thats usually the reason. unfortunately though it usually DOES end up alluring men. moral of the story? men lurve female- female-impersonators.

di, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Noone said they were wearing it to allure men.

People said it's not alluring.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>>Somehow, the idea of someone putting on an arsenal of leather, fishnets, what have you for the specific purpose of trying to turn me on ends up doing the opposite.

errr. yes they did ronan.

di, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but i weren't having a go at nobody, merely suggesting another way to interpret the seductive attire of some women.

di, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Em I stand corrected.

I got the impression it was more a general question on whether people find seductive clothes seductive as it was put.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes i wish ppl wanted me for my hot wee bod all sexy in whatever, rather than just my ageless wisdom and boundless humanity and grate brane and fabby sense of humour. If I *had* a hot wee bod I wd certainly dress to drive all wild. But lace is OUT because it suXoR.

mark s, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Di, you are brilliant because I was going to say the same thing but couldn't think how to put it.

I rarely wear seductive clothing (when i do it's the tight, short skirted kind, not the leather kind, and i don't consider fishnets seductive). When I do it's because something fun is going on. I used to love playing dress up and now I still do, only I wear my dress-up clothes in public and they're not hand-me-downs.

Maria, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well yeah, but its not entirely unrelated.

di, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd never wear seductive clothing just cos it men wanted me to.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i fucked up that sentence real good.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>>well yeah, but its not entirely unrelated.

this was to ronan.

i'll answer the question properly now: do i find seductive clothing seductive? it depends who's wearing it. if its pam anderson, dud. if its kathleen, hamana reow!

di, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about It Girls?

mark s, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

will no one acknwoledge the horror of the flock of seagulls story. HORROR.

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes yes the horror the horror: but next time you tell it end it "She promptly vacates her bowels" as this = k-phunny

mark s, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who are you, kodanshi?

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S lets his hormones run away with him shocker!!!

"What about it girls?"

Can you feel the sleaze people?

"IT girls" he says? Yeah sure.

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan, IT is internet speak for a technical person who is much sought after by companies. not to be confused with mae west. this merely fits in with mark's hacker chic(Xor).

Ronan, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Herein I zig whilst all U lot zag. I like fishnets, black shiny stuff etc. I think it = rowr, as long as it's blax0r. Sorry. Also I think it looks stupid on all but the most beautiful ov men, but loox good on women, yeah, me = boringest of boring het ILE posters (blubs)

Norman Phay, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think people look faintly ridiculous when they wear overtly seductive clothing. For instance when Di puts on her sassy little outfits for LD50 gigs I think there is a fair amount of irony in how she wears the clothes- they are apt to be short etc, but retro and slightly unconventional as well. Sex with a sense of humour perhaps?

I don't wear seductive clothing, its too damn cold round here and it is generally uncomfortable to wear. The clothing would not please me and I am sure as hell not going to wear it to impress men, particularly not the munters round here. They are all scared of me anyway, mwa ha ha ha. I like being threatening and scary

Menelaus Darcy, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love tight, black, very tight, short, fishnet, type clothing. An unfortunate side effect of wearing this sort of clothing is that some men find it seductive and alluring.

I like to wear clothes like that because that's the way I feel - like some sort of strange, black, fishnetty creature.

I generally find girls in more casual/less overt clothing more attractive.
