iss is th best video game ever, fifa is rubbish, anyone care to disagree?

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 10:02 (twenty years ago) link

not on these boards no, I doubt it.

pro evo 3 is out on platinum already!!

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 10:04 (twenty years ago) link

I know, I doubt they will update before the new PS3 comes out. Wayne Rooney will remain elusive to those of us who dont believe a cutting edge console is that important.

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 10:10 (twenty years ago) link

buy it chris, buy it.

I heard there is an update in October. this is standard practice apparently. They've worked alot on the offside/advantage rules. I can't think of much else that needs tweaking but I guess they can take the entire game up another level.

It really is amazing how realistic it is. The sense of each goal being unique is quite strong.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 10:23 (twenty years ago) link

totally, and the way that your moode, or style are acurately reflected, rather than your skill is a real winner for me, best game ever.

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago) link

free kicks are way too hard to score in iss for it to be realistic

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:07 (twenty years ago) link

they're not hard! anyway people hardly ever score free kicks in actual football either.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:07 (twenty years ago) link

i think after playing it for like 9 months we've managed to score one direct free kick, actually i'm not sure if we scored any at all.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago) link

I'd say we score them about one in ten.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago) link

they're not hard! anyway people hardly ever score free kicks in actual football either

are you sure?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

what's the secret? xpost i mean, either it blazes over the bar or the keeper gets it.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

Oh and I'd say we hit the post or bar/make the keeper make a diving save maybe twice every ten goes.

I'd offer to explain how I do them but that would be overly dorky, even for me.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

Say it's a left footer I usually aim slightly left of the goal and then hold diagonally down just after I let go of the shoot button. The opposite for right footers.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:10 (twenty years ago) link

i must try this..

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:12 (twenty years ago) link

Do training! It helps alot and before you know it it'll be freekick in the net time.

One time we were playing and for some reason I made my keeper take the freekick, it was some mug, not Chilavert, and I scored! It was the funniest thing ever, the keeper does a kind of somersault and shouts like a wild beast.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:13 (twenty years ago) link

ken, if you complete the skills sections then it becomes a lot easier. esp if you unlock classic Holland

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:14 (twenty years ago) link

right i see.. haha i'm going to do this. at the moment at home when we play we just trip people over just before they get into the penalty box knowing that the other guy was never going to score the resulting free-kick.

my flatmate will be in for a surprise. mwahhahaha

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:16 (twenty years ago) link

have you got 3 yet Chris?

I scored a lovely free-kick with Okacha yesterday, so satisfying. Another trick you can do is, for really close in free kicks, if you've not got a great player taking it, use the this thing it says in the manual for a sort of power free kick, you press r1 just as you press shoot and there's no curl on the free kick, they just blast it.

I like to try these with Jorge Bermudez.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:18 (twenty years ago) link

yes, but I've been neglecting it for champ man and civ3 lately. The training is blooming infuriating, but worth it I think, certainmly helped with long balls etc

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:19 (twenty years ago) link

also, do the pressure-sensitive pads help? i only have one of those at home (the rest are the old analog playstation ones - one doesn't even have the analog bit actually haha)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:20 (twenty years ago) link

You can win the teams by getting points in the masterleague too. I have made Liverpool into a well oiled machine. Chilavert in goals, Sagnol, Bermudez and Beckenbauer across the back, Davids and Okocha central midfield, Kewell on the left wing, Figo on the right, Totti just behind the strikers, Croyff and Ronaldo.

drool.

x-post I'm not sure if my pad is pressure sensitive, I got a black one free with the PS2 which probably is, is it? My other one is the old analog one too, I use the old fashioned wreck your thumb pad though.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:22 (twenty years ago) link

also wait.. iss is the same thing as pro evo right??

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:22 (twenty years ago) link

iss was the old name. they're actually two different games now, but on the snes and ps1 it was called iss pro evolution at one stage.

then the team split into two and there was some crap game called ISS on PS2 and the new games are Pro Evo. I guess people still call both ISS though.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:24 (twenty years ago) link

(ok i'm like questions galore today but this is the last one)

any idea why they have like the names of some players/teams but not others.. like they have the international teams, but the club teams have names like "north london", "manchester" or something. and holland's players seem to have made-up names. (although holland aren't even in fifa at all if i remembered correctly), was there some weird licensing issues going on or something?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:28 (twenty years ago) link

yup, it's all about the licensing issues.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:30 (twenty years ago) link

I tried playing that ps2 ISS game, fuck it was the worst thing I think i have ever done. Perhaps we should use the nomenclature ISSPE from now on.
Liscenses is the answer to the abobe question, some players/teams have exclusive contrcts with fifa, and some with other developers. most of the main teams have their own games now, so it is understandable why they wouldn't want more than 1 franchise having their name. ISSPE has triumphed by putting game play before brand accurasy and I salute them for it. Anyway if you notice the names while you are playing, you are not in the zone enough.

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:32 (twenty years ago) link

you can buy a cd for a fiver or so which fixes all the info in the game.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:35 (twenty years ago) link

now come to think of it i remember the snes version of ISS actually.. "Perfect 11" or something. that was actually really good for its day.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:45 (twenty years ago) link

I had one called "International Superstar Soccer Deluxe", it was ace, we still play it occasionally.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

yeah i think ISS deluxe is US/UK version of the sequel to that.

one year passes...
Revive

I sold Fifa 2004 because it was rubbish. I couldn't ever get around players, always had to pass and the replays were unsatisfying and buggy.

What should I go for now? Fifa 2005 or ISS Pro (or whatever it is called in the US)?

The sense of each goal being unique is quite strong.

This statement of Ronan's make me want ISS Pro but I am a sucker for stats and accurate squads, etc.

What say you?

It has most player names now and stuff. And you can edit anything so you could bring it up to date and stuff.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I am glad the ILE position falls entirely along the Pro Evo/ISS = As Close As You Can Get To Actual Football/FIFA = "I LIKE TO AVE THE PROPER KITS N'THAT, ME (belming optional)" line.

Because it is RIGHT.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Avoidant (Ferg), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

pro evolution soccer 5

More Licenses

English Licenses will be included for the first time ever. But don't get too excited, only Arsenal and Chelsea are going to be licensed. Other new licenses include those for Rangers, Dynamo Kiev, Galatasaray and FC Porto. 2005/06 kits will be added for the clubs from La Liga and the Dutch Eredivisie. Real numbers and lettering is included for the licensed teams. Updated kits have been added for the unlicensed clubs.

New Stadiums

Mestella - Valencia (Spain)
Riazor - Deportivo la Coruna (Spain)
Newlands - Ajax Cape Town (South Africa)
Saitama - Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan)
Berlin Olympiastadion - Hertha BSC (Germany)

Improved Graphics

Although the game uses the same engine as in Pro Evolution Soccer 4, there are various enhancements. Players will now be seen to have their shirts untucked, and can also have tape on their fingers (generally used to cover rings). Wristbands are also now included in multiple colours and players can wear cycling shorts underneath the club shorts. Players will now also move better around the pitch thanks to even more animations.

A new weather condition has been added, snow. Now you can play in even the coldest conditions, and even see breath coming from players mouths. Also to do with the pitch, you can now play with new balls, including an orange ball for the snow conditions. More ad boards can be seen around the sides of the pitch. Previously only 3 different styles were repeated whereas now there are many more styles.

And There's More...

- Improved online play. Konami have promised less noticeable lag. In addition you can now compete your Master League teams against each other.
- Improved Master League with more control of player growth.
- Two new positions: Wing Back (For players like Cafu who go forward a lot but are defenders) and Second Top (For players like Scholes who play generally just behind the strikers).

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 21 August 2005 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I play at 3 star level and generally win 3 or 4 nil each time scoring from a variety of long range shots and super headers.

is it time to move up a grade?

New Pro Ev is incredibly exciting.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't wait. it's the highlight of every October.

Adam you must persist, soon you will be scoring goals "for fun".

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:14 (nineteen years ago) link

It really exposes how linear my playing is, I seriously lack the skill and spontaneity to be creative in attack. just pass run pass run pass INTERCEPTION! FUCK! pass run pass run pass

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

the key to the game is r2, really. just keep bashing it when you're dribbling and eventually you'll get an instinctive feel for how to use it and how to turn players. once you beat a man or two you'll find more passes open up to you. it's a bit like real life in that you'll usually score more easily if you can quickly exploit any space you get or any mistake the computer makes.

it is very hard though, for real. I remember playing the first one on the super nintendo years ago and we nearly took it back it was so hard to score goals.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

"several prominent schools have come out in defence of the R2 as key to the game but late in 2005 a breakaway faction formed citing R1+R2 as their golden god"

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I will beat you.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

just take it easy adam and look for the open pass

don't rely to heavily on R1 and mix up your sprinting with R2

also use R2 to feint away from players, this is a touch more difficult but with practice you'll soon pick up the timing

in and around the box don't press the shoot button for more than an instant

and sometimes even when you tap square, if your man has timed it right, you can hit the ball very hard

don't worry about headers and free-kicks

and learn how to use L1

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah the last one is urgent, and when you've learned how to use L1, then learn when NOT to use L1!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

after you'd told me in cherubini's ronan that you can use R2 to adjust your players position as the ball is coming in for a header I realised what they had done

they made R2 a weaker version of R1+R2 allowing you to shift your guys position within the tracks he is already on, it's very subtle actually and really useful sometimes more useful than R1+R2 which takes you completely off the tracks

a beautiful game

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never used the off the tracks thing, I might learn but maybe am too set in my ways now. You can get great volleys from outside the box by easing off with R2.

Cozen's point about not overusing R1 is a good one too, as a general rule, avoid kicking the ball (whether to pass or shoot) while sprinting.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

L1 is great for whipping in early crosses when you are outwith the designated "crossing rectangle" (that is the area around the box you would usually cross from)

you can use it in conjunction with all the usual cross presses

that is, L1+: Ox1 for a normal cross, Ox2 for a near post, Ox3 for a low cross along the crowd, Ox1+R2 for a high looping cross

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

the Ox2 cross is the best in my opinion, the Ox1 I find rubbish.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:43 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah that's the thing I figured with R2 it just takes you a touch away from your player's original position so it works as essentially adjusting your footwork whereas R1+R2 is effectively a volte-face

different contexts, different button presses

ungh

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Sunday, 21 August 2005 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

i lent my copy of pro evo 4 out so have been playing pro evo 1 all weekend, some thoughts:

- corners seem better for some reason, they whip in alot faster and stay nice and low
- free kicks are a piece of piss, at 25 yards out you don't even need to curl them, just aim for the top corner, push down and get the power bar to about 2 thirds and they whip in every time
- RUN BOYS RUN
- chris james is a NAUS albeit an unintentionally hilarious NAUS: "the game's tightening up and the crowd have started a mexican wave!"/all time classic "the sun is beating down and the wind is shooting through the stadium" even tho it's clearly PISSING IT DOWN CHRIS/i sometimes think this must be japanese irony or something "ha ha look at those funny englishmen and their lots of rain!!"/what really made me piss myself in nervous laughter was when it started to glitch and chris james kept repeating "BARCELONA. BARCELONA." over and over, occasionally stopping to say something else "BARCELONA. BARCELONA. the ball goes out of play. BARCELONA. BARCELONA. BARCELONA. BARCELONA. ooooh look at him figBARCELONA. BARCELONA. BARCELONA."
- GET A GOAL ELEVEN
- michael owen is the best striker in the game!
- TERRY BUTCHER. he's a genius. chris james: "it's half time terry, what did you think of the game so far?" BUTCHER: "it could go either way chris" chris james: "good point terry". and when chris james introduces him at the start of the match and his little speech is drowned out by the fanfare "thanks HORNS joining HORNS HORNS should HORNS HORNS match". i only wish he said more, tho it is such a joy to hear his little voice crop up every now and then through the match and can be a real inspiration during a tough game
- arggggh no super cancel!!!
- the graphics are still as beautiful as pe4 except the player animations are obviously not as sophisticated. but i like this, the more "realistic" players are made to look the more they turn out all strung out with zombie eyes, the players in this seem more like computer game characters if you know what i mean. still crack up every time when i see the little bababa chats they have with each other, and it's funny when a player hugs a smaller player than himself cos he just kind of reaches for the air above his head whilst the little dude just grins like they really love each other.

i could go on but i won't cos i want to play it now. all in all it still STANDS UP and is still a CLASSIC GAME, almost as good as ISS 98 the best game ever made.

I think like, when you press x while the shoot bar is charging, and it cancels it so the guy shapes to shoot then veers to the side instead.

I like doing that.

F (Ferg), Monday, 22 August 2005 00:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Especially when you're playing against people who always just rush out with the keeper when you get near goal, assuming that you'll be too flustered and just not get a shot in time, and you're all like "oh no keeper bearing down on me panic panic pani- (deft sidestep; tap ball into empty net) AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

PES1 is hilarious yes. Agree about Terry Butcher, but my favourite part is when, after Terry says some half arsed comment like "It was a close game, neither side wanted to lose" or whatever, there's a long pause as if the anchor is waiting for Butcher to elaborate, then he just says "Thanks for that Terry!"

Also is it PES1 or even current PES where they say "WELCOME FOOTBALL FREAKS" at the beginning of games?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:16 (nineteen years ago) link

i think that's from the ps1 evo, the one after iss '98. pro evo does contain the legends: 'high praise from europe, where "football" was born' and 'please refrain from throwing missiles' on the PRESS START screen.

beatles fan, Monday, 22 August 2005 19:29 (nineteen years ago) link

do any of the pes4 heads ever remix the select screen music? i spent ages on a stoned come down waiting for a friend to wake up and play just mixing the different versions of the tune by moving the cursor to different options. i think anna kournikova's smach court tennis on the ps1 was actually the first game to do this.

beatles fan, Monday, 22 August 2005 19:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it was PS1 Evo that had the Japanese music that at one stage broke into a scat, like "BAJAHAHAHSHDHCCHAHASGHDGAHGSHDGAGSHGAAAAAAAAAAAAHIIIII"?
