Okay, now those collection of letters don't even look like a word.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:14 (twenty years ago) link

OMFG! I hope the terrorists hold out on all-out victory before I can see and savour these two films.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:17 (twenty years ago) link

Dodgeball looks like its gonna be disappointingly run-of-the-mill but Anchorman looks pretty damn solid.

stephen morris, Sunday, 18 July 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago) link

This movie was so incredibly classic.

It not only exceeded my expectations, it kicked my expectations' ass and left them for dead on the side of the road in a cloud of dust.

Quite a decent movie. We've already nicknamed a fellow at work who's not the sharpest crayon in the box, "Brick", in honor of the film.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 19 July 2004 06:34 (twenty years ago) link

the funniest bits are the ones i can't remember, it was just the way ferrell inflected certain lines and stuff. and when in rome! the "set-piece" gags weren't nearly as funny as the throwaway stuff (except maybe the dog/bear confrontation, holy shit a funny dog joke in a movie!!)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago) link

I loved all of the "Great Beard of Zeus!" exclamations from such a character. But I was a little disappointed that they didn't work the "I heard their periods attract bears." bit in at the end.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:02 (twenty years ago) link

i think it was implied!

(subtlety!)

the main character made practially no coherent sense, not least because of the "great beard of zeus!" exclamations, which were some of the funniest things in the film.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago) link

haha contra amst these are sounding pretty good to me reheated! but when i walked out of the theater it was all the animated bit, the singing bit, the cowboy's homo yearning bit...

ya amst otm on the cod-e. lang.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

i don't think i've used the phrase "dog/bear subtitles" before this thread.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

the only part i was wasn't in hysterics over was the news teams throwdown. cameos killed it. and tim robbins as the pbs anchor is only a little funny.

there were very small children in the audience when i saw it. they freaked out when jack black kicked that dog over the bride. i thought they would be traumatized. but when the dog was shown to be alive they cheered!

ryan (ryan), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago) link

Vince Vaughn's funny because he mails his parts in - he obviously didn't give a damn about Dodgeball or this, but he'll still get comedy parts left and right.

Christina Applegate was terrible.

step brothers.

dylannn, Sunday, 17 March 2013 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

loved almost all of it, except that cack-handed 'cat shit on plate' scene where you could tell ferrell and other guy were improvising - both talking too fast and kinda smug (like 'woah we're breaking new ground here!') and not reacting to each other in any believable sense. this part really stuck out like a sore thumb, didn't fit the feel of the film at all and kinda just wasn't funny. "get this guy a steak. get him a steak now", naaaahh. should've saved it for the outtakes. minor minor gripe though, just seems weird how this was left in - poss a bit of hubris slipping in, like 'we're so funny we're awesome at EVERYTHING, even the crap we make up on the spot!'.

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

three months pass...

I saw it yesterday. Too long. Also needlessly cruel and "edgy", lots of race baiting, lots of scenes that should have ended 5 minutes earlier than they do. The cameos at the big newscaster fight at the end was the best part. Will Ferrell was the worst part of this.

It's a parody of the first movie, basically, it's like if Adam Sandler remade it and HAD TO SCREAM EVERY OTHER LINE or speak it in a loopy, stupid 5th grader voice. Again, the racist stuff was effing awful, especially since they justify it by having him dating the black female newswoman (to the point where he meets her family), and then she just completely disappears when he decides to go back to his ex-wife, like the script writers just completely forgot she existed.

Is the end worth struggling through the rest of it? My wife and I tried to watch this last weekend and gave up about 35-40 minutes in. The race-baiting stuff was so off-putting.

Okay, didn't think so, but wanted to hear someone else tell me. I didn't expect this to be great, but I was shocked at how awful it was - even with the supposedly "funnier" R-rated cut.

djenter the dragon? (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 21:49 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it was horrible. And the ending is a rip-off of the first movie, just replace the gorillas with a shark.
