i want to digitize vhs stuff, apparently i need a video capture card? do you have one, can you recommend which one to get?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Any card using the phillips 7134 chipset is a good bet. Pretty good quality, TV, compoisite and svhs capture. Very cheap as well. Might be able to lay my hands on one for you.

i want one with the new PC i am planning to get. would a 256MB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce FX5200 with DVI-I, DX9, TV Out and Video In do this for me (not sure if it has the Philips chipset)?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, a friend is moving to barcelona, so its her leaving kind of thing, i'll find out what the deal is

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Whenever Gareth posts about things like this, implying some project of his, I always think he's trying to cultivate a mysterious "What's he building in there?" air.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i think he just wants to get old episodes of Byker Grove up on Bit Torrent

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a sufficiently outré project.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

you could also skip the capture card if you have firewire (dump from vhs to a minidv camera w/rca cables, then shoot it over the FW port)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess that means you need access to a minidv camera too

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Sonar last year and it was the best fun I've ever had in my entire life.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

He wants me to share in the joy that was Morrissey on Jonathan Ross. If you are going to transfer to DVD, Gareth, make sure that it will play this time.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Just use bittorrent!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone want mine?

Lazer Guided Mellow Leee (Leee), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The last time I dled bittorrent plus the Moz show my computer broke. Now that I have a new computer, I am wary to challenge it so soon.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's just one tape I can do it at work.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 3 June 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

it isnt

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 3 June 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

how much are the cards going for these days? i've got a copy of Premiere which is good for grabbing if the bundled software isn't much cop

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

anything from £30 to £30,000

Ed (dali), Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem, that thing i did you (and that you probably still haven't watched) was done on a 60 quid card (which went down to 40 quid the week after i bought it, grrr) but one that isn't fast enough to grab at full pal resolution (although that's probably a processor / disk throughput problem rather than the card). it's an avermedia something something.

that 5200fx card looks similar to the one i've just bought that was 40 quid and is 50% faster than the (3(?) year old) card it replaced despite being 40% of the price. don't think the 'tv in' capabilities are enough to do video capture, usually you need a specific 'video capture' card with a tuner etc. the 5200fx is actually quite low specced these days, it wouldn't cut it in a top of the line games machine for instance, but is fine my desktop.

i might have the moz interview already encoded and ready to go, will check tonight.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed, we *have* to go to Sonar London, as I have to meet with the girl who's dishing out our festival passes and at least we are on the guest list so that bit is free.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

check times on posts they were all made yesterday before we knew we had to go to SONAR London

Ed (dali), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i will watch it some day koogs, it doesn't mean your gesture was not appreciated (and i must return favour someday sorry). thanks for info on the card, looks like i can get something more advanced then, and a separate tv tuner/card altho i'm still not sure how feasible or worthwhile that really is (don't have a video in my room as it stands)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, there are 5200fx-based capture cards - http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/graphicscards/productView.htm?quicklinx=2VKG
so yours might be one of these. they all seem to have 'personal cinema' in the name.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 3 June 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

is this any good?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it \doesn't appear to hs=ave audio capture on the card which means you have to make play nice with your sound card.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
I want to get a USB external tv tuner (for a laptop) but doing a bit of research sez the picture quality is pretty horrible. Should I just get a TV instead?

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

So now I'm looking at various USB2 Tv Tuners -- the Hauppauge one seems to be the consensus favorite, but it's pricey. What are other comparable brands? (I've also read that stereo on a USB2 connection is dicey at best.)
