Those are beautiful. They look like spacecraft. Am I lame for thinking they would be hell to dust?

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have to wear that dress for it to work?

nabiscothingy, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for reminding me that I have to look for floor-lamps after work. Yes, it is a miserable chore because I don't know where to go. Maybe I should shop online but I'm sick of having a dark livingroom. The store I was relying on has closed down.

I am very fussy about lamps. I don't especially like mainstream American (European?) lamps, the kind with the cloth lamp-shades.

Some of these looks nice. I guess I should read the thread.

I am seriously in love with the perfect quality of light from the halogen lamp in my office. The lamp itself has a lamentable lack of style, but after working under incandescents, and way worse, flourescents, it is beautiful. Much less eyestrain.

Also, dimmers, people. I have put dimmers on many of the wall switches in my living space. Ambience.

nine years pass...

I want to start experimenting with low-pressure sodium lamps but I don't know where to begin. I know I need a bulb. What sort of fixture do I get? Do I need a ballast? What do I do with it?

crüt, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:39 (eleven years ago)

not for normal lighting purposes obviously. it's just a project.

crüt, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 02:40 (eleven years ago)

further research indicates i will probably cause a fire if i don't do this right so maybe i should start smaller

six years pass...

I appreciate LED lighting is a good option for your house because it takes a lot of strain off the grid in in KWH and lasts for years. But I hate LED street lamps and miss the old fashioned sodium ones with the yellow glow that used to have a pink colour whilst they warm up in the evening dusk. And also in converting to LED they seem to have done it as cheap as possible in my area where there seems to be just one bolt holding the new LED bulkhead onto the top of the old lamppost.

I once saw a driver skid into a lamppost after a hail stone storm and the LED bulkhead fell off the post and luckily glanced off the driver side of the windscreen just cracking it, which would have certainly killed the driver if it had shattered.

just waving a stick at clouds, I know!
