Sounds like it's going to be fun: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/chelsea/3769549.stm

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Fun? Have you seen Porto play?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Point taken. The so-called 'mind games' with the likes of Ferguson may well be more interesting than the football.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen them play and they're excellent. Solid and fast into attack.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope he sells about ten players

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Press will be gunning for him from now on and I hear he's not too good at handling that sort of thing

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen them play and they're excellent. Solid and fast into attack.

Didn't say they weren't excellent, just said they weren't much fun

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That's okay, neither were Chelsea this season, particularly.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

True, from what I saw of them

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved watching them in the Champs League this season, I thought they varied their game rather well according to the circumstances.

I'm delighted to see him at Chelsea because I think he'll be fun to watch, I think he'll mnake Chelse an interesting side and I'd be surprised if they win much (my predictions in this regard are very often wrong of course).

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

how can he sell players, he is in the most trecherouse job in any sport. If he sells players and the team fails to win every bit of silver available he will be blamed. never should have got rid of Claudio, what chelsea need is stability, ooh and Arsen Wenger, ooh and thiery henry, ooh and god on their side.

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Any club in Europe would be pleased to get Mourinho

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like his patter about only wanting to work with 21 players max. There may be some bargains to be had...

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet Mourinho NEVER SLEEPS.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

re: I like his patter about only wanting to work with 21 players max. There may be some bargains to be had...

Alexi Smertin to Pompey in a cut price deal please !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Right then - speculations on the Chelsea transfer merry-go-round then?

Out - Veron, Cole, Gronkjaer, Crespo, Mutu - possible Jimmy as well?

In - Deco, Costinha, Paulo Ferreira, Didier Drogba if no one else.

I can forsee monumental clashes of ego ahead, dropped players crying left right and centre. Should be entertaining.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Chelsea have a lot of fun players tho - Duff, Cole, Lampard, Hasselbaink... (those demolitions of Newcastle and Lazio really stick in my head)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Rainieri just commented would prefer a move back to Valencia rather than Spurs

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I new he was a good man

lukey (Lukey G), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"We have top players and, sorry if I'm arrogant, we have a top
manager," Mourinho proclaimed at the beginning of a long smarm
offensive. "I am the European champion. I think I am a special one,"
he added, like David Icke only without the turquoise. Mourinho's
record [the Big Cup, the Euro Vase and two League trophies in two
seasons] suggests he is indeed special, but - like an incompetent
masseuse - he is going to rub an awful lot of people up the wrong way
over the next few years. Still, Roman Abramovich won't care so long
as he massages Chelsea with some silverware.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine the collected British sports hacks are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of him failing

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh but then they'll be walking on the fighin' side of him. That can't be good.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think his arrogance is a good thing - it will be very entertaining. Now Chelsea are a Top 2 club with an awful lot of money, they need someone who will really get stuck into the inevitable three-way slanging match with Wenger and Ferguson. Ranieri was always too affable.

Also, he will be able to slap Wenger down with "I have won the Champions League. I am better than you."

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we get Mourinho to sort Julio out too

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

But Julio is also a special one.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Loan him to Portsmouth.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"special"

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah, usurped.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't let mourinho do the dirty work for ya. wanna sort me out, I FAP once a month.

haha x-post

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So how many newspapers have used the headline, "The Ego Has Landed", and if not, why not?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Try trying it more Julio

lairy stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

PORTUGUESE MAN O'WAR >>>>>>>> El's Kitchen >>>>>>>>> The Ego Has Landed

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

We're talking Fleet Street/Canary Wharf sub-editors here, if one of them hasn't use "The Ego Has Landed" I'd be amazed. "Portugese Man O' War" is likely too.

El's Kitchen is certainly the most puzzling of these. No point in wasting ire on the matter, but 'El' is, of course, about as Portuguese as Le or Der. [sigh of resignation]

There have been some cracking Mourinhisms:

(paraphrasing)
- Tottenham parked the team bus in front of our goal

- 5-4? That's a hockey score not a football score.

...and his tribute to Ferguson this week:

- 1000 games? Not me. I'll be on the Algarve by then.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 12 January 2007 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

He'll be gone before the end of the season, I reckon. If he's publicly criticising the board in the press he's probably agitating for a sacking. And if not he could well get one anyway.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 January 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

he hasn't actually said anything that controversial or criticised the board directly has he? time to work on bringing some youngsters thru into first team for once Jose.

SVEN DROPS MARSEILLE CLANGER
Posted 12/01/07 10:47

Sven-Goran Eriksson has dropped another clanger by admitting that he is to become the new boss of Marseille - live on television.

The Swede was heard by millions of viewers telling Djibril Cisse that he was about to take over the reigns at the French club.

As Cisse was was being subsituted off in Marseille's 4-3 defeat in the Dubai Cup against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, the former England boss was heard asking him: "I am the next Marseille manager, do you intend to stay at my club?"

The Swede hasn't made the best of impressions at the French club, and was thrown out of the training ground on Tuesday for attempting to talk to Frank Ribery.

Eriksson's actions angered the Marseille staff, who quickly asked for security to escort him off the training ground.

"It is funny to see that," said Marseille's director of sport Jose Anigo. "At the moment he is nothing.

"One thing is certain, those kind of people don't know what Marseille is all about. L'OM are special to the town and people."

Anigo has expressed his displeasure at the way Eriksson has behaved in the wake of the rumours circulating about his impending appointment.

"I don't know if they are really interested in L'OM, but if he is to join the club, he will have to do it with more discretion and class," Anigo added.

"He has invented a new way to sell himself and to communicate - to sound important in clubs where people already work."

Eriksson has been out of work since leaving the England job last summer but is still under contract and being paid £6,500-per-day by the FA until he lands a new job.

Perhaps he's like the dude in those "stay in school kids and we'll give you money" adverts, and he'd disguised himself as part of the dugout?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 12 January 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

I don't believe Sven would actually say I am the next Marseille manager, do you intend to stay at my club?" just like that. Seems ridiculous.

Did he have a reputation for this sort of bungling when he was at Lazio?
