PREMONITION

So this morning I had to collect my wages and so since my Mum was driving into the city centre I decided to take a lift. On the way in she was saying how my Dad intented to drive from here (Dublin) to Belfast, then to Mayo (yes mayo etc) and then home. It's quite a long distance to do in one day and she said she had a bad feeling about it, and told him to cancel the trips. This is unusual for my mum.

Anyway my Dad just got home, and told me he spun out on the motorway and the back of the car flew into the air and stuff, hit the barrier of the side of the road and he ended up facing the fast lane of traffic, where another car braked just in time not to hit him head on.

He's fine, all things considered, not a scratch, car is sort of fucked. But my mum is FREAKING OUT! I guess it's incredibly lucky I can joke about it here but my mum who is not superstitious or a mentalist now believes she had a premonition.

INSERT WEIRD MUSIC!

So tell me your premonition stories.

Wow. I'm glad your Dad's okay, Ronan.

I'd tell you about the premonition I had about Princess Diana's car crash (which I described to a friend of mine, three days before it happened) but you'd all think I was some kind of mentalist.

i don't want to go into the whole story, but i had a strong premonition the day that i had to drive back to college from a friend's place that i had been visiting. i ignored it, and when making a stop for gas got hit broadside by a car going about 50mph. probably one inch to the left, and i would have been killed.

oh i have premonitions all the time, but they're lame trivial stuff like i "know" exactly when someone will call even if i haven't talked to them in forever. one time i was walking out a restaurant and i had a sudden tought: "suspicious minds" by elvis presley will be on the radio. i hadn't heard the song in a long time and i never listened to the radio anyway. then my dad turned on the radio and the song was "suspicious minds".

i'm sure a lot of it is explainable through my subconicious mind working through the probability of something happening, but the extent of it sometimes makes me doubt it. it's easy to write it all off when science doesn't have a mechanism to explain something like that (well other than the standard probability argument which can go a long way but i'm not sure if it covers the entire distance, if you catch my drift).

The other half of which is that you only remember the times it works.

I've never had a premonition!!

I used to have a friend that could guess what song you were thinking of in your head. It was fuhreaky.

mandee, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

erm, I guess the "in your head" bit of my sentence is a bit redundant.

"The other half of which is that you only remember the times it works."

true. but...i've had plenty of failures too. i've noticed the best way to intentionally guess or predict something is to think about it, then forget about it. you can't force it, or it interrupts your subconcious thought processes or whatever causes you to guess correctly.

"I used to have a friend that could guess what song you were thinking of in your head. It was fuhreaky."

was this person able to do this to people only with people she knew or random strangers as well?

wow, Ronan, glad your Dad's okay.

This happened sorta recently on a Friday morning when I was unemployed and didn't wanna wake up because I thought something bad would happen. Lo and behold, at 11 my brother calls to tell me our grandma died. Then, it was the massive amounts of guilt for not calling her a few weeks before like my mom asked, even though I thought then that it might be my last chance to talk to her.

sounds more like a coincidence

The premonitions I've had usually come in dreams. I once dreamt I was at a friend's funeral. He died exactly a year later, to the day.

premonition, coincidence - either way I still feel like shit.
