i've never seen gas prices this low; it's kinda creepy.

haven't been laid off, probably won't be laid off, but now is not the time to hate your job, that's fer sure.

I was laid off in July - perhaps Assenter was really behind Sept 11 and wanted to get in early with me? I haven't had a proper job since, and I'm beginning to think I don't want one; at least not another soul-sapping job like the last one. Until last Friday I had minus $21.45 in the bank. I tried to get work in London after Sept 11 and there was just no way it was going to happen.

I'm not laid off, but I wish I would be. Work is beyond miserable right now, but I carn't quit because then in a Paul Strange-ish indentured servitude sitch where I would owe my employers $5,000 if I were to suddenly take my job and shove it.

Whereas if I got laid off I wouldn't owe them anything.

these are dissapointing times...in our age of "enlightenment" we seem to all be unhappy and unfulfilled.

Right now I'm staying right where I am -- I had no real reason to leave, though I was doing a bit of pondering regarding next year and a variety of changes. However, UCI is about to be hit with a hiring freeze and I want to make sure I keep the nice stable job I've got.

I was contemplating resigning from my job (script editing in children's TV), and then they decided to re-structure the department, giving me the opportunity (but not the obligation) to take redundancy. Woo hoo! I also realised last week that my flatmate/tenant had accidentally not paid the rent for the last, erm, seven months, so I got a £2,400 windfall. Which was nice. So paradoxically I'm in the best financial situation of my life. Funny how it goes.

Though, obviously, if I don't find another decent job quickly I'll be broke AND utterly miserable. Online job-hunting links (in the UK) received with enormous gratitude...

I've just gotten back from a day with the p's in steel country. It's bad, folks - really bad. They were debating whether or not to eat that night. The newspapers are filled with stories of the mills cutting jobs. I'm scared to death for my family and for that whole area.

At work, we were supposed to get some new people, because we are understaffed. But it looks like that won't happen. Right now, I'm a little worried for myself, but there are some people in my department who do little to nothing, and if I were them, I'd start working really hard, because there have been a lot of mysterious "reorganizations" going on lately.

On the up side, apparently rent increases have slowed, perhaps because fewer yuppies want to live in the city.

Things are looking quite shaky at my firm. I'd be very surprised if I had a job past January.

RickyT, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the industry i'm in seems ok, and the company in particular is actually doing really well. then i am working for one of the big hitters and they never *really* lose out in recessions, it's only the small-guys -- the one's that keep the economy in a healthy state of competition -- that suffer.

chaki, Sunday, 4 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh my gosh, kerry - is this around pittsburgh etc?

i live in constant fear of being laid off, as my section of the company is the only one that isn't profitable. (hello to any co-workers reading this - i know you are ft fans, and may have clicked on the link somewhere!) at least 3x weekly my friends get to hear the 'what am i going to do if i get sacked' speech. to add to this i really want to move back to new york but i guess my timing isn't so great ...
