Right then - I'm moving house in a week and a half and I've got a few things that need moving to my new place round the corner ('bout a 5min drive). These are essentially the big items of furniture I can't move any other way - double bed, large metallic sofabed, bookcase, desk and a couple of boxes.

The firm I've contacted are quoting my £175 for the move - is this excessive? I have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER about these things.

Also if any South Londoners who have recently moved (that's you Hopkins) know of any decent firms it'd be greatly appreciated.

Can't you just hire a van & do it yourself? Much cheaper option if you can get ppl to help you lift!

Can't drive :/

do you not have a friend who could (i can't or i'd offer obv.)?

i believe mr hopkins used the family firm of movers, "Hopkins, Hopkins and Hopkins"* :)

*who subcontacted some of the work to "Berry, Jones and Barang" another well regarded company

I took the "invite my friends to help and pay them in ALE" option, which worked very well.

I was quoted more than £300 for a 5 minute move but that also involved three flights of stairs and enough vinyl to kill a camel.

Okay, how much is hiring a van for the day likely to be?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

Surely you must know someone that can drive, it really is loads cheaper, even with ale involved!
x-post we hired a long wheel base one with a tail lift (a huge one but you prolly wont need as much) & it was £70 for 24 hours.

We paid a total of about £80 (incl. insurance) from a gaff on the Old Kent Road and we got a very nice new van.

I got a van for £45 - a mini-transit fits a lot more in than you'd expect. Mate drove it and we were finished by 11am.

11am. What a happy time on a day off.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago) link

That quote is about right unfortuantely Matt, but yes, getting a mate who can drive (that's me out too I'm afraid) and a van is infinitely the best way forward.

have we had a "who in this bitch can drive?" thread?

also is it just me or is ILX turning into UK Homes and Living today?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yes. It's coz we don't get nearly enough of property and moving and home improvement on the BBC, you know!

My dad just refused to hire a van, on the grounds he didn't want to drive it. He did, however, offer to pay for the removal guys. Frankly as there are six flights of stairs involved and a very heavy metallic-framed sofabed I agreed to this.

Move at 9am, should be well settled in time for 5pm Euro2004 kickoff. Rah!

It just shows how basically not useful TV is, and how much better word of mouth is.

Word of mouth is pretty poor for watching the footy, Archel.

where "well settled" = the telly is plugged in and receiving a signal, the sofa is opposite it and the beer is in the fridge ;)
