Play the Relocation Crime Lab game with me!

My score is not that great, I could have doubled it if I lived in Oakland, though. :(

Here's what came back from the lab:

NYC (Brooklyn), New York has a Relocation Crime Lab Index of 227 which is a higher crime rate than the national average

Chicago, Illinois has a Relocation Crime Lab Index of 375 which is a higher crime rate than the national average
The Relocation Crime Lab Index gives the city's crime rate relative to the national average of all the cities in our database. A value of 100 means that the city is exactly average. A value of 200 means that the city has twice the crime rate as the average city. A value of 50 means that the city has half the crime rate of the average city. To learn more about how our data is compiled, click here.

Please note that the number of crimes reported has been adjusted to yield a rate per 100,000 people.

Regina's obviously grimier than I thought. Protect ya neck, Horace.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:57 (twenty years ago) link

In 2001, Chicago had the highest number of murders in the US (discounting 9/11) with 666.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:58 (twenty years ago) link

The stats are inflated because of the Minor Thirds tour hitting here last fall.

Huk-L, Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago) link

as well as Hstencil passing through.
Also, we have a lot of bullshit laws, so it's really easy to be a criminal. Oh, and we also have a very terrible poverty-coupled-by-racism problem.

Oh shit, they're coming to Oakland at the end of July! Should I buy an automatic and put up the barbed wire fence?

Yeah, the shitty tie-dye graphics police in Berkeley aren't taking their job that seriously either, by the looks of things.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, we outlawed tie-dye during the Scare of '92, but since then, y'know, whatever. It's a victimless crime.

Here we go, my hometown vs. where I go to school:

Little Compton, Rhode Island has a Relocation Crime Lab Index of 5 which is a lower crime rate than the national average

All zero except:
Aggravated Assaults 56

Surprising, seems like a lot for a small town!

Rochester, New York has a Relocation Crime Lab Index of 242 which is a higher crime rate than the national average

Robberies 419
Rapes 38
Homicides 18
Aggravated Assaults 281
Motor Vehicle Thefts 0 1053

Little COMPTON lol!

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

WTF is wrong with Whitehorse, Canada? Wow. Holy shit. Presumably each city has a population < 100k? That might explain it a bit.

I live and work in DC which has a 508. Hooray for me. That seems to be heavily weighed by the massive amount of robberies and car thefts.

Some of the rates for different kinds of crime are really rather disturbing to me.

I think I will move to the west coast, perhaps.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

Also, that means my hometown is 5% the crime rate of average or ~2% of Rochester.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago) link

Regina is around 200K and Whitehorse is 22K

Huk-L, Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago) link

We moved from Philly to MV.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania vs. Falmouth, Massachusetts

Robberies 633; 24
Rapes 67; 15
Homicides 20; 0
Aggravated Assaults 690; 269
Motor Vehicle Thefts 1023; 110

No wonder I pay 1/12th of the car insurance I used to in Philly. Surprisingly high number of rapes and aggravated assaults in the quiet village, though. Must be all that boozin' those weathered fishermen do.

Where my mom lives: Pittsfield, Massachusetts has a Relocation Crime Lab Index of 50 which is a lower crime rate than the national average [n.b. this is the closest place listed to her actual town)

Where my grandparents live: Texarkana, Arkansas has a Relocation Crime Lab Index of 142 which is a higher crime rate than the national average

This was kinda surprising. Ten times as many aggravated assaults in Texarkana, no homicides in Pittsfield.

My dad lives near there. Maybe my dad knows your mom. Does your mom run in circles who like to do contact improv, breathwork and goddess channelling?

Maria D., Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

Nope. My mom is into gardening and fixing up the house she just bought.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago) link

Just a note for those from small towns who are surprised by high incidences of particular crimes: those numbers are indexed per 100,000 people; presumably your respective hamlets don't have nearly that many residents.

(not trying to be a dick, just clearing that up....)
