all these people listing Vice City - do you really drive around Miami beating up prostitutes?

I actually do deliver the paper, grind 50/50 over the pipe, go up and down elevators in "The Building" at night, and battle space bees.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 June 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

I would if I lived in Miami. As it is, I have to settle for Tacoma

I actually think Jet Grind Radio for Dreamcast is entirely perfect as a summing up, for me - the unpopular populism, the bright cartoon colours, the mucking about on wheels...

(I guess with four others I'd pick Planescape, Sonic, European Club Soccer and M:TG planeswalkers or something)

Bizarro Facto: As somebody who probably plays/has played more video games than anyone else on these boards, I can't for the life of me come up with a list of 5 that define me.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 4 June 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago) link

RBI Baseball -- for that bit of dude in me (yikes, I'm just going to leave that as I typed it -- too psychologically rich to alter)
Tetris -- a fascination with patterns, at times approaching OCD
Metroid -- austere and difficult at times, sometimes getting stuck in a rut, but surprising nonetheless
Gyromite
Paperboy

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:16 (twenty years ago) link

No explanation for Gyromite!?! That game is positively rife with homoerotic undertones!

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago) link

Hahaha! Actually I've only played that game like a few times in my life! My best friend in elementary school was the only one I knew who actually owned the Robot controller, and wasn't Gyromite like the only game you could use it for? I guess I meant it as a reference to my tenedency to be quirky/cheesy and a little out-of-step at times, but hey, if you want to see shafts sliding into holes, who am I to interfere with your reading?

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Friday, 4 June 2004 02:28 (twenty years ago) link

Snafu
B-52 Bomber

OMG Ally, not only did you obviously have an Intellivision, but you also clearly had the IntelliVoice attachment to play B-17 Bomber. Did you suffer the taunts and accusations of the townspeople for having an Intellivision over Atari/Coleco/Commodore? I did. Fuck 'em. Intellivision rules. Esp. the sports games (baseball, football, hockey, etc)

Defining myself by Intellivision games only:
Bump 'n' Jump
Pitfall
Ice Trek (I never did finish this goddammit)
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons - Tresure of Tarmin
White Water!

This thread has now made me check eBay for old Intellivision consoles and games. DAMN YOU ALLY I WANT TO PLAY SNAFU SO BAD

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:17 (twenty years ago) link

The Intellivision controllers with the slide in the sheets ruled so much.

True story: I got involved with a girl initially through her intellivison (keep in mind that I am 22; this was fairly recent)

Phantasmagoria
Phantasmagoria 2: Puzzle of Flesh
Sanitorium
The Sims
The 7th Guest

These are the only computer games I've ever played. A computer game has to be goth for me to like it - or at least have goth elements; like gloom, doom, demonic possession, gore, etc. But not a game where you shoot stuff. See? I'm selective.

mandee, Friday, 4 June 2004 12:20 (twenty years ago) link

jon, that's like the seinfeld where he drugs the girl to play with her GI JOES

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

Locknchase ruled. Jon what the hell were you doing playing Intellivision? That shit was in the grave before you were able to tie your shoes. Surely you would have been raised on PlayStation or whatever you damn kids were into...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

But nothing beats BURGERTIME

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

Rob Bolton, fuck you!!! I never owned a playstation, nor any system greater than 16 bit. I cut my teeth on NES; I remember when SMB didn't even come with Duck Hunt. I was born in 19-fucking-81

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:35 (twenty years ago) link

Simmer down there, chief. I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see that people still dug on Intellivision after it was deep-sixed and became the butt of everyone's gaming-related jokes...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:37 (twenty years ago) link

My uncle (technophile) bought it when it first came out... I wonder what happened to it. Also, I saw an Atari system (for $6 with everything) that was wrapped in plastic so I couldn't see the model number, how do I ID it?
