Have you ever been writing stuff and thought of a super hot word combination but just for safety's sake googled said sentence fragment to make sure you the man but Google tells you that you probably heard it before and your sketchy ass just forgot, or that you just have unoriginal thoughs?

Your examples first!

Errrrrrrrrrr yes I dreamt of a band name years ago that I've been waiting to use ever since and typed it into recently to find out it had been used by some crappy American comedy troupe. I always dream of song titles too - they've probably been used too, dammit.

I thought that the 'QAOP Space' combination of keyboard keys was an original idea for something or other I forget but it turns out loads of people have already used it for band names and stuff.

I've been hearing or maybe just reading the word 'sketchy' a lot. I wonder why this word has leapt to prominence.

218 hits for "sketchy ass"

Sketchy is old as the hills surely?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 4 June 2004 09:45 (twenty years ago) link

I think it's an old, old word that's come back recently. With a slightly changed meaning.

thing of thing, Friday, 4 June 2004 09:48 (twenty years ago) link

What does it mean now?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 4 June 2004 09:49 (twenty years ago) link

When I were a lad, "sketchy" meant vague - "My memory's a little sketchy" etc. But if people now talk about a "sketchy neighbourhood", they mean dodgy.

Maybe I'm wrong though and making it all up.

Yeah you're right about the dodgy thing. I think it now also has something to do with drug damage.

In Edmonton they call crystal meth 'sketch'. "Wanna get sketchy?" Or sketchy is what you are when you're coming down off something.

LC, Friday, 4 June 2004 09:53 (twenty years ago) link

It's meant dodgy for years too - in Scotland anyway. Plus if something is described as a "bit of sketch", it means (and meant) a bit of a situation - awkward, unusual, whateva.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 4 June 2004 09:54 (twenty years ago) link

Have just checked Webster's and the OED, no mention of the "dodgy" connotation, only the "lacking in detail" one. So I think the dodgy meaning is definitely recent (although perhaps not in Scotland).

Recent as in, post 1985 at the latest! I've been using "sketchy" in that sense for at least that long.

LC this is psychotic behavior..
