Ok, Iron Eagle vs. Top Gun.

Iron Eagle:

Pros:

Chappy Sinclair
Doug Masters
Col. Nakesh: "Now you may deal directly with me now; Colonel Nakir Nakesh!"
Doug Masters: "And you can deal with me; Doug Masters!"
Chappy and his jukebox/dance moves
The walkmen attached to Dougs leg and Queen
Dio
someone named Slappy

Cons:
Hmmmm.

Top Gun:

Pros:
Maverick
Iceman
Cougar
Jester
Hollywood
Goose
Slider
"The list is long and distinguished"
"Yeah well so is my johnson"
Meg Ryan
Tim Robbins as Merlin
Kilmers chomp
The flexing volleyball match
"If you don't mind I'm just going to take a shower"
"Yes I do mind"
Sex to "Take my breath away"
The bathroom scene after Maverick first meets Charlie

Cons:
I can't think of any.

This could clearly be a tie. I think Doug Masters and Maverick need to duke it out in the sky.

Chappys speech
Doug Masters: "And you can deal with me; Doug Masters!"

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

top gun, of course !
made me want to be a US jet fighter pilot for a while (which is odd considering i'm not american and am short-sighted...).
funny thing is i've never seen it in english (considering i was around 10 the last time i watched it...).
I even wonder if i'd find it as classic in english as in french !

GOOSE IS DEAD.

the "hit on" method of maverick in the bar/toilets : C/D ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Top Gun is gayer than Judy Garland.
When I was little I cried at Iron Eagle when I thought Chappy Sinclair got killed.
Top Gun is about the Navy.
Iron Eagle is about the Air Force.
Top Gun makes arguably more sense than Iron Eagle does.

The real winner here of course is Fire Birds with Nicholas Cage.

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

what about "The FLying Leathernecks?"

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM THE GREATEST!!!

Top Gun is about Miramar and San Diego and you can see the Coronado Bay Bridge in the background a few times. IT IS CLEARLY GENIUS. Also, when it came out my dad had just finished a tour as a liaison between a carrier group and a sub group -- as he was based on the carrier the whole time, he got to know a lot about landing procedures and so forth and as a result we treated the film as a documentary, since my dad was happily explaining and commenting on things as they went. This made much more sense than the film itself. (My dad then went on to do some sort of program to be a fully qualified passenger in the jets -- I'm not totally sure of the deal, but basically they trust you to go up with pilots as needed and to help out in emergencies and so forth. Among other things in training, my dad had to eject and parachute out off the California coast, and was one of only two people to make it through his training class. Yay my dad!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna know how a military consultant can afford an old-school Porsche. Actually, that makes well-enough sense, she probably gets paid better than the pilots.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, my dad had an old school Porsche for years! Then again the sub service pays damn well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"should we just drop down on the floor and go for it."

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

wow - even more bonus points for your dad.

my dad was on a minesweeper = shitty second-hand mazda for a while.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

wow - even more bonus points for your dad.

I recall it being a sleek green...910, I think? Very compact, two seater. Let's put it this way, Steve McQueen could have easily driven it and nobody would have been surprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Iron Eagle III for all the bad Peruvian and German accents !

kephm, Friday, 4 June 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad had a Porsche too. I think it was like the default auto purchase when you got promoted to O-3. WTF.

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 June 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm what the fuck is with my dad then? I'm pretty sure he made Lt.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, this is really bugging me now, WHAT model did my dad exactly have -- it might have been a 911 now that I think about it. I'll have to ask him. Tombot's dad and mine clearly were thinking the right way, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

He did get it right around the time he made 0-3, though, now that I think about it, or shortly thereafter. Had it throughout the seventies and into the eighties a bit, at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

actually my dad left the Navy long before I was born so I really don't know but I don't recall any stories of cool cars (I think they had their VW bug shipped to Honolulu). In his military subcontractor days he never drove anything too flashy, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

i love how Merlin taps the fuel gauge in a multimillion dollar aircraft, when he's out of gas.
