Looks like you can hit the MS Terraserver website for photos of the continental US(and Alaska).

http://www.terraserverusa.com/

This isn't really a new thing, i guess, but the fun part is that the photos have a resolution down to 1 meter.

SO! for example, if you were planning your bombing run, you could look here:

http://www.terraserverusa.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=1368&y=23423&z=17&w=1

And see Community High* at the top-center of the frame. The first N-S street to the left of it is 5th Street. Go south one block and you'll see my house in the middle of the block. Set your sights accordingly.

*fun fact: Community High features Andrew WK as a notable alum, among many others.

Are there similiar Canadian/UK/AUS sites?

Is that the HS that Pete Larson (Bulb, 25 Suaves, etc) was teaching at? Didn't Wolf Eyes go there too?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

yup. Pete's still around, and Wolf Eyes, Fred Thomas, and half the Ghostly Records roster all work at Encore Records, which you can see if you pan the photo south a few blocks.

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY ARE GOING TO GET YOU.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

You can see a faint baseball field in the middle of the picture. The white block of the house down and to the left of it is my parents new house, which is now much larger!

http://www.terraserverusa.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=1613&y=23007&z=19&w=1

This is where I am currently living, just down the street. My house is the middle house of the three west of the road in the big expanse of forest.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's me, just north of dead centre. Will be leaving in ten minutes though, so after that drop da bomb by all means.

I lived in the lower center tower. Canal visible in SW. Park in west. Parking lots everwhere. Grad students to the east. Pan North to see hospital and Uni.

Here's my Uni! See the group of 6 buildings? I'm living in the lower left one in August. The bright blur is an I.M. Pei glass building.

Building adjacent to small homes is my office where I am now!

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't get a good shot of where I work from that.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay, where I live. Bristol is the major street veering to the left from the center, Randolph is the street running north/south that curves and intersects with Bristol in the lower left corner. Continue along Randolph until it ends up against the grouping of buildings in the right half of the photo -- that's the South Pointe complex in its near-entirety.

Those who live in L.A. will be familiar with this locale, since the main intersection towards the lower right is Santa Monica and Gardner. The fourth building to the left (south side of the street) on the first street north of SM and G is mine. no stalking please

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay, where I work. I am in the larger of the two buildings you can see just left of center -- that's the Langson Library (the smaller building is the Study Center, where I used to work until last December). Elvis Telecom is not far off -- the DOE is the curving building on the left set amid the darker grounds.

I lost my virginity in a tree house dead center here!

Here is a butte in Wyoming where I did coyote research! I sat on top of that thing with a radio direction finder and a telescope!

http://www.terraserverusa.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=2667&y=24180&z=12&w=1

I think this is my Wyoming place of residence.

This is great!! I can barely recognize my house, but I can finally see what's in the next door neighbor's yard!!

That's my neighborhood, for sure. My house is somewhere in the lower left corner. I can't discern where exactly though, as it won't zoom in any further. Zoom out, if you'd like so you can check out the proximity to the beach.

Fr4ncis W4tlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 5 June 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually...

http://www.terraserverusa.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=4050&y=10212&z=19&w=1

Follow the quite visible bridge heading northeast. Drive past that building casting a shadow, turn right on the first street after that (the one where all the cars seem to be parked on the same side). That's my street. As soon as you pick out sort of a blurt-like tree, my house is right underneath it. That pic's from '95, however, and I'm sad to report that tree is no more.

my entire hometown, all square mile of it. the line on the left is the interstate, the line on the right is the railroad, my house was just a bit southwest of the oval (high school track) on the left. not shown: sucking pit of despair.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 5 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

But that's the black tar pit at the bottom of the photo, surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 June 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Coronado, home of most of my youth, sitting smack dab in San Diego Bay. The old house is in this photo -- about halfway down the image from the '1994' date at the top, on the left side of the street. Admiral James Stockdale lives right across the street.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 June 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Multimap have some aerial pic's for the UK. My house is dead centre, just to the right of the n-s road. Scale 1:5000, not as good as terraserver but better than nowt.
