Demons! Jockeys have them, but do you?

In an ESPN Sports Center Report on Smarty Jones jockey Stewart Elliott last night, the ubiquitous cliche "demons" was used at least four times in reference to Elliott's problems with alcohol.

When did this usage become commonplace, and why? Does anybody here have demons, and what are they?
