Oh, it's a puppet -- I thought you were referring to some strange biological process.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 June 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Even at the height of his popularity, I was amazed by the minimalism of Bob Carolgees's performance. He has a dog. Called Spit. Which spits! Amazing!

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 6 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been spat on by Spit the Dog. Just thought I would mention it.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 6 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

*gasp* Ailsa - were you in the Tiswas audience???

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 6 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, he was the special guest when I went to see Rolf Harris and I was sitting right at the front. I also got picked on by Grotbags the Witch. I was traumatised for years.

GROTBAGS THE WITCH

I understand the UK a bit more now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No really, you don't. She was EVIL. And starred with Rod Hull and Emu (also EVIL).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 6 June 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Rod Hull and Emu were good on the BBC. They only became evil when they defected to The Other Side.

do not speak ill of the tragically demised

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Spit the Dog was great, much more of a star than the feeble Cough the Cat.

Who was the Phantom Flan Flinger, btw?

C J (C J), Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

was Cought the Cat another Carolgees character? Soz, I have no recollection. The only thing I remember Carolgees doing which wasn't with Spit was advertising Hellmans mayonnaise.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob Carolgees' puppet pets were Spit the Dog, Cough the Cat, and Charlie the Monkey.

His alter-ego was Houdi-elbow (with the song "There's only one Houdi-elbow" sung to the tune of Cuantanamera). Houdi-elbow being like Houdini (knee), y'see.

Please tell me I am not alone in remembering any of this.

Who was the Phantom Flan Flinger, btw?

When Tarrant was on This is Your Life (or that shite Carol Vorderman equivalent, I think it was) they brought on his dad as the Phantom Flan Flinger and claimed it was him all along. Which it wasn't.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Who was it then? John Gorman? Lenny Henry?

C J (C J), Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what is Sally James doing in this pic?

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 6 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

One sat morn:

After flan flinger gets one himself in the face, wipes face and says something...
Tarrant: "No, flan flinger, it's not a speaking part!"

So, who knows.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 7 June 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if there were several different Flan Flingers. I suppose I'd have to watch videos of old episodes to see if they moved differently or had varying girth to be sure.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 7 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"girth"
