i do have some sad yearning to be the kind of person who thinks about espressos the way other people think about wines. however, i doubt i've ever had a good coffee - where do i go? what do i look for?

This is easy but yes, Toby, a bit sad. You want either Algerian Coffee Company on Old Compton Street or the original Monmouth Coffee Company on the spoke of Monmouth Street between Seven Dials and Shaftesbury Avenue. Both have bean variants with longer names than Crufts winners and staff knowledgeable enough to guide if necessary. My pal Stuart is fussy about these things and when he moved from LA to London pronounced the coffees from these places sublime - I just get the house blend, macchiatofied.

disdain all coffee in london, b/c the brits don't know how to make a good cup of coffee.

here here, but at least at the algerian coffee company you can make your own blends from their vast selection of Beans.

Buy a grinder and at least three different ways of making coffee.

thanks suzy. in all honesty i don't actually want to become a total coffee geek, but i would like to see what the fuss in being one is all about, if that makes sense.

ed - three ways?!

If you really want to be a coffee snob, you should go to places with shit coffee. Then you can say, 'This coffee is shit because of X,Y, and Z' and be a snob.

I'm sure this helpful.
