Euro 2004 Predictions - OH YES

those of you who played the Premiership edition should be familar with ze rules. but let's recap:

i post a list of fixtures, you re-post fixtures with your predicted scores for each game.

TEN points are awarded to you for a correct prediction (e.g. you say France 2 England 1 and that is indeed the final score), be it a win lose or draw. you get FIVE points if you predict the correct score and winning team only (e.g. you say 2-1 but final score is 2-0), and THREE points if your result matches but the score doesn't (e.g. you say 3-1 but final score is 1-0)

correctly predicting a goal-less draw gets you FIFTEEN points, how else are we to alleviate the boredom of such results ehh?

whoever's overall goal tally matches the actual total number of goals scored for that particlar round wins that amount of points as a bonus - this is calculated automatically so no work is required on your part here.

these rules apply for the group stages. when the knockout phase begins further rules/points allocation will be introduced e.g. predicting extra-time/penalties and outcome.

within ten minutes barthez comes running off his line, owen goes down like a sack of spuds a la argentina. barthez off, beckem scores penalty & rips top off to reveal ridiculous new tattoo of tupac cradling the baby jesus. as always the ten men play better than the eleven would and henry scores a goal that will give james nightmares for years to come. england hold out luckily during a second half onslaught even though neville does his best to give away a penalty. 1-1.

Yes, a staggering lack of belief all round that Greece, having qualified for this tournament above Spain, could actually pull off a result...(I also include myself in this, giving Portugal the benefit of the home advantage). Within about ten minutes I had my head in my hands "it's Senegal-France all over again"...

*as I read the rules, no points are awarded for picking the right teams for the final. But I reserve my rights if stevem provides further clarification.

Surely the whole point of having triple and quadruple bonuses for the final is that you're taking the risk of your predicted teams not getting there?

http://base58.com/ilx/euro2004/predictionsgame/ILXE2K4P4.gif

*deep breath*...here goes...

points for the quarter-finals were awarded as follows:

predicting the correct score after 90 mins (3-10 pts depending on score)

predicting the winner of penalties or extra time (5 bonus pts) - you didn't need to specify scores in this case

double points on joker match specified (i can only apologise if this was not clear this time)

there were 6 missed penalties - only Zebedee predicted this, he was awarded 20 points as a result

three people's goal tallies (not including penalty shootouts) matched the actual tally of 8 (Casper, James Ball and JG) - they each received 8 bonus points as a result

something i forgot to mention from round 3 was that if your nominated player scored more than once you would get double (or more) the points hence 20 pts for Ruud Van Nistelrooy

sorry this round was chaotic due to my absence - hope all makes sense

and it looks like we have a winner in Chris Brown, but guess who's looming from behind...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I won't be as lucky this time.

I was doing damn well until the 1/4s. Much like England. Sob.

I'll be over it come 2006 (unless we don't qualify, in which I might never).

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

same here jel.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well my Holland/Czech Republic final doesn't look like too good a suggestion now.

Anyone who hasn't predicted the final yet, you've got about 12 hours left in which to do it.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

portugal 2 greece 0 (hoping greece win tho')

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 July 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

FINAL

Portugal 1 Greece 0 (Pauleta penalty)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Portugal 1 Greece 0. Ronaldo

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

gawd if Pauleta doesn't score would that be a first? a team winning a tournament and their supposed star striker not scoring once? Did Gui'varch score in '98? could be classed as a 'star striker'?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Gui'varch didn't score IIRC - the only 'front man' who scored was Tegs Henry against the Saudis and Dugarry against South Africa.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Greece 1 Portugal 2

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave's right - Gui'varch was injured in the group opener vs South Africa (replaced by Dugarry - who scored almost straight away; he missed the Saudi match and only came on as a late sub in the Denmark and Paraguay matches; thereafter he was first choice and never looked like scoring). Henry also scored against SAF and Trezeguet was on target against SAU.

two weeks pass...

nice one Cabbage - James Ball finishes in the top two of an ILX football game for third time in a season!

note that many people were awarded ten points because they didn't specify a penalty shootout in any match (as was the case) - also note that you didn't score points for predicting a score in extra time that was actually decided in normal time (happened to several people with the Portugal v Holland semi - hard luck there).

no goal tally bonus this time tho - and of course nobody could predict how it actually went down.

def not doing a Premiership game but thanks to all for playing along.

Well done Chris, and thanks for running the game again Steve.

It's just as well you're not doing it next season though, as my luck is bound to run out soon.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 19 July 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I am quietly chuffed with my ninth place (with no thanks at all to my utterly duff semi and final predictions). Thanks Steve, well done Cabbage, and roll on World Cup 2006.
