Any ideas yet where we could do this?

All of the Gaslamp isn't awful, but most of it certainly is.
There's plenty of nice places in Old Town, that are likely to be overrun by tourists, however. I'm not the best candidate to pick places for these sorts of things, as I don't really go out drinking in public all that often...

also there's a great little quarter about a block or two south of old town, called washington heights, with like five amazing restaurants (mexican, thai, crepes, mediterannean, and uh, i forget) and a british pub and a semi-hipster dive bar and a great gelato cafe all crammed together on one city block. i don't know how many people are going to be staying downtown for comic-con but i would happy to give rides to like four people (that's all i can fit in my car). it's only about two miles from downtown so anybody with a car can easily get there.
and hillcrest is just up the hill from old town and that's a good little burb too.

Of course, we could soak up the glorious local scene at the Casbah.
Oh wait...

DJ Funk is the internationally acclaimed pioneer and undisputed king of Ghetto House Music. With tracks licensed to the likes of Carl Cox, Jeff Mills and Richard "Humpty" vission for use in mix for use in mixtapes: along with having played 19 countries across 5 continents (sub-headlining with artists Wu Tang Clan, Run DMC, FunkMaster Flex, Daft Punk, and Bad Boy Bill to name a few) ... the forthcoming independently released 12" LP "Ghetto House Pimp'N" further establishes DJ Funk as one of the most prolific, intuitive, and gifted composers in contemporary dance music

I'm staying downtown (? I assume so) in a hotel on West Harbour Drive, near the SD Convention Center. Surely, this is in an expensive, tourist-y area? How far will I have to walk to find a decent place to drink?

Even though it's total suburban teen & parent hivemind, you HAVE to do Horton Plaza. You may never want to again, but you have to at least once. Surely the weather will cooperate.
The Casbah is sorta walking distance from downtown, if you don't mind a long walk. It's off Laurel right near the San Diego Airport.. off Kessler. It's pretty much the only club that has consistently decent shows.. www.casbahmusic.com... here's the schedule I found.
Sun 13 Isis, Mare, Eluvium $12 Mon 14 Lucero, Honorary Title, Communique $8 Tue 15 Bunky, The Robot Ate Me, The Donkeys $6 Wed 16 Blizzard, The Infants, Kingdom of Snakes $6
hmmm, well if any of these names ring a bell in a good way, then there you go.
It's worth going north/west to Hillcrest, as it's a really neat place to kill time, as there are a lot of used bookstores there and you have the record store Off The Record, which is the best (and maybe only(?)) record store near downtown San Diego.
(the BEST record store in all of San Diego county is easily Lou's Records, possibly the best store in SoCal second to Amoeba, but that's a 25-30 minute drive up I-5 to the Leucadia neighborhood within the city of Encinitas.)

Too bad the Isis show is on the 13th -- that's the one night I can't stay out late because my talk is the following morning. At least I saw them in Toronto last year.

Horton Plaza is nice, it reminds me of the open air mall in Hollywood. In fact, I'm assuming that the Hollywood mall was modeled after Horton Plaza.
I never made it to Hillcrest. Also, I was planning to hook up with a friend at Pacific Beach, but we couldn't coordinate our schedules.
On Tuesday, a coworker and I decided to blow off the conference and bike to Mexico instead.
All in all, it was a fun time.

There is one on 9th or 10th that I passed by on the walk to Pokez one night. I didn't have to chance to go inside, but it appears to be a vinyl-only shop, specializing in reggae and house.
