Umm, but doesn't the media just attract more females anyway?

without the pics eh? we'll see...

Time to grow up and just accept now that the only people who get to hold clipboards and pretend they're doing something genuinely worthwhile in TVland will only ever be pretty females or guys who know the producer via a friend, and get on with your life.

(was my latest response to previous thread)

why anyone would want to work in the media I don't know

Ed (dali), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of being 'creative' was what appealed to me. OK laugh now.

Jon I hear Lionel's daughter likes the oxycontin.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I find nepotism in the media frustrating but understandable to an extent. I think this is just as big an issue as 'pretty girls swanning right in' or whatever. And the media is not the only industry in which such practices are, um, practised.

There are a lot of very creative (and technically astute and competent) people working in the media. That new Hewlett-Packard advert is brilliant.

THE OC?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is complete bollox -- maybe some PYTs end up as runners, but in general the media is far from being female-dominated. Total nonce-sense. It is nepotistc, yes -- but then so is finance.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Still if you think girls have it easy, you are a complete idiot. Even if this 'getting a cushy job by fluttering their breasts' idea holds weight in this instance, there's all kinds of other shit they have to deal with that gives me nightmares just to think about.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Stevenm has a good point and Mark does too. I can only comment from experience, to which extent I have found the film/ television industry to be utterly sexist beyond what would be deemed acceptable anywhere else. There are, believe it or not, a lot of qualified and talented young men (of which I consider myself one - yes, blah blah) but there chance of entering into a full time job in these industries is not high because of such sexism.

I have encountered sexism in publishing too. A local paper, in fact, offers a paid traineeship every year. When I graduated I applied for it and knew the girl who obtained it the year before. She had no qualifications nor experience but recieved it. I asked her how I should go about impressing them and she told me, quite openly, "you don't have a chance because they like to employ young girls". I applied for this scheme two years running and the only people that got it were *sigh* young girls.

This is not a lone sample. I could give a lot more.

Well they can tell me off if they want, I'm basing this on four years now of personal experience. Unless you think I'm making it all up, which is indeed your entitlement

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

C-Mang, as we've pointed out about 26 times before on ILE, the sexism in the industry you are talking about goes both ways. Why do you persist with this tired reverse-sexism stance as if it's radical thinking or at all surprising?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Enrique, to be fair I was commenting on one such experience in publishing. I'm not as experienced with this as I am with film and TV.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

calum find yrself an overbearingly gay boss who employs people for all the wrong reasons, go to the interview in a thong and you, too, can be sexually harrassed in the workplace. it's that easy.

why the 'white'?

pc dimbleby stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, though, the perception at 'local rag' level is that if you send a girl to interview someone, the subject will open up more.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 10 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ity's just that publishers tend not to employ verbally abusive sexists with strong tendencies towards making threats of violence under pseudonyms and posting pr0nographic material on talkboards...

This is hardly scientific research or evidence, is it? You went for a job, and the girl who got it says, 'They only employ girls', and then for the next two years they offer the traineeship to girls. Ummm, she may not have had the same qualifications or experience as you, but even a cursory read of your contributions in the past show you to be quite intellectuallly deficient, and also socially too. So obviously you blame your lack of a traineeship on perceived (paranoid) sexism, as opposed to facing up to the fact that she might have seemed a better candidate than you.
