Free (crappy but working) car, London area!

Okay, I'm a fucking idiot for forgetting to post this this morning, but anyway.

I am getting a new car tomorrow, which means I have an old car going cheap. Well, free, to be honest (though I would ask £85 or so for the road tax which lasts another 7 months).

It's a 10 year old VW Polo (last year of the ugly old model). On the down side, it's a bit bruised and dented, the seats are dirty and mismatching, there's no radio, the MOT's run out and the engine's small. On the plus side, it runs perfectly, has only done 55,000 miles, and is really cheap to run and insure. It's in solid shape, and if it was MOTed I have no reason to think it'd need anything beyond maybe a few pipes and seals replaced.

So, a free car to anyone who wants it. Post on this thread by all means, but in the off chance someone's interested, my number is 0 7 7 7 1 6 5 6 9 6 1. I might be able to offload it to the garage I'm buying my new car from, but they won't give me a penny for it either and I'd rather give it to someone who might use it.

Oh, and it's called Mr. Rushworth.

My god, someone take it since I can't!!!!

I am tempted. Like, oddly tempted.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago)

It'd be like "From Barry to Bari".

The care has RUN THE GAMUT!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Barima, if you want to talk about it call me tonight. There are no catches apart from the fact that it doesn't have an MOT and I don't know how much it would cost to get one - but obviously if it took an MOT test and needed masses doing to it you could walk away (though maybe we could share the £40 or so cost of the test). Anyway, up to you.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I'll even leave one of the AFC Wimbledon stickers in the back if you like.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

MOT? Is it like a smog test or something?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

it's a test you have to do yearly after the car is three years old it basically checks its roadworthiness in terms of parts not working, tyres being blad, emissions being too polluting, etc. etc. You have to have passed it to legally drive, get taxed tec.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, it's only 10 yrs old! I mean, how shitty can it be? Barima, you should totally get it and cruizzzz around town with all the bitchuz.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:20 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could take Mark's car.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Me too. I might be forced to change it's name to Mr. Marco Rushmore, though - and would end up calling it Marco.

So it's probably just as well.

that girl you used to know (luna.c), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

It looks a little, well, elevated or something.

I'm not interested in the car but I would like to text you dirty messages if that's ok.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:24 (twenty years ago)

If no one takes it, maybe you could donate it to a charity and get a tax break...? That's what I did with my last car.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

but luna, cars must be female!

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Is Penelope the secret Markelby admirer?

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

(Yes but it's a POLO. Marco Polo, get it?)

(I know, shut up)

that girl you used to know (luna.c), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Not all cars are female. Mine is named Bradley, for instance.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Mark, you can come out from behind the sofa, I'm only messing.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I stopped off at the Quicksack for some beer and cigarettes
The old man took my money as he stared at my Corvette
He said, I had one just like her son, a 1963
'Til the man down at the bank took her from me

Oh She was hotter than a two dollar pistol
She was the fastest thing around
Long and lean every young man's dream
She turned every head in town
She was built and fun to handle Son
I'm glad that you dropped in
She reminds me of the one I loved back then

Then I handed him my keys and said, here take her for a spin
The old man scratched his head, then he looked at me and grinned
He said son you just don't understand it ain't the car I want
It's the brunette in your 'vette that turns me on

I had one that was hotter than a two dollar pistol
She was the fastest thing around
Long and lean every young man's dream
She turned every head in town
She was built and fun to handle Son
I'm glad that you dropped in
She reminds me of the one I loved back then

Lord she was hotter than a two dollar pistol
She was the fastest thing around
Long and lean every young man's dream
She turned every head in town
She was built and fun to handle Son
I'm glad that you dropped in
She reminds me of the one I loved back then

She reminds me of the one I loved back then

Oh my! Consider this an expression of interest.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

GET IT, MARIANNA!! Cruise all over town with BITCHUZ!!

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Penelope, I'm still waiting.

Marianna, call me to discuss it. I basically need to know what to do with it very soon, ideally before 10.30 am tomorrow (as the garage could take it off my hands). Also, make sure you know roughly how much insurance would be as that's often the dealbreaker. This is a good bunch of insurers if you want to find and compare quotes.

Barima, I haven't heard from you. Have you cooled?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:49 (twenty years ago)

is it odd that this car has not been gotten rid of yet? i can't imagine it being hard to get rid of a car here in california... if i offered a free car, any car, i think it would take about five minutes to unload it.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago)

exactly, this is WHY I AM BAFFLED NO ONE HAS SWOOPED DOWN on markelby to take him up on his offer!

at the same time, tho, car insurance in the UK is really really expensive. and not as many people have licenses, i spose. or am i fulla shit?

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I've just bought my first car. I'm 26, have had a clean licence since I was 18, live in a nice area, and my lowest insurance quote was still £475.

(although I didn't take it, because the car dealer offered to give me a year's free insurance. Woo!)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago)

OH MY GOD JESUS, that is expensive!

yeah, okay, well I see why no one is taking mark's car.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

i'm 23 and have a clean driving record and i pay 900 ever six months because i didn't pay a jaywalking ticket and failed to appear in court for it. BULLSHIT.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's not because I'm still too lazy to finish my lessons and get tested and things like the insurance are a bitch to afford. It's because my brothers and sister are standing behind me and teasing me.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 1 October 2004 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm not trading in the car today, so anyone who is interested, give it some thought and get back to me. Maybe on Monday morning when people go back to work I'll have more success. Marianna, ball's in your court dearest!

(I just got comprehensive insurance on the new car for £382, and that was the cheapest I could find, even with 10 years no claims bonus)

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 2 October 2004 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Are there any insurers that don't cap the no-claims discount at 5 years?

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 2 October 2004 08:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes, there are - I remmeber I made full use of my nine years when I renewed once.

The car is now gone, and the proud new owner is our very own Ken C! Thanks for tolerating such a selfish thread :)
