And what are/were their names? etc etc

(I sit here typing on a dead flash £2000+ laptop with one hand, cuddling my Bubbles with the other. Lovely)

cuddling my Bubbles with the other

This board has hit rock bottom.

emil.y, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, several. Their names are none of your business (mostly generic animal names actually, i.e. my big penguin is called Penguin etc.)

Tom, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i haf just fetched Ducky to help my type this, from his long-time place in my flat (= hanging by top of head from music bookcase, as of just now wedged in by KING OF THE DELTA BLUES: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF CHARLIE PATTON and ORIGINS OF THE POPULAR STYLE: THE ANTECEDENTS OF 20TH CENTURY POPULAR MUSIC — both cracking btw, Ducky is very erudite).

He must be 40 if he's a day and is coming a bit unravelled (like me). He is knitted and skinny, simpsons-yellow w.orange beak, red and white stripy tanktop, blue trousers. More survive in a box at my mum and dad's home, some mine, some Becky's, several in fact my mom's, but the moths have settled in.

My Bubbles
(cuddling not pictured)

Graham, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two Opus dolls in fine condition, a random Boris and Natasha combination, a miniature Nummy Muffin Kookool Butter and a couple of other furry things. They sit on my CD racks for the most part.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I have a Taz and a Mr Hankey the Christmas Poo, but they are recent.

I was going to say that many more of my toys are hard and/or rubber, but it makes me sound like the prop-buyer for one of Alix's and Sarah's lesbian porn videos, so I won't. But they are. Oldest = small yellow rubber space-octopus called Squidge, who is is guess 35.

mark s, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was 9 or 10 I decided I was too sophisticated and mature (arf) for my huge soft toy collection, so I bundled into a vast bag and hid it in the attic (I couldn't actually part with any of them, obviously; some of these are my oldest friends! *nostalgic sigh*). However, over the past three years I've accumulated a load more soft toys, mainly cats, and may soon give up this blatantly failed pretence by retrieving my old friends. I love my Jellycats.

The recent ones don't have names; the old stuff did, but too many to list, plus I can't remember them all. My first soft toy was a little rabbit, imaginatively named Little Rabbit. Later, I'd get a soft toy every time we went abroad and name it something which seemed vaguely appropriate for the country it came from, so I have a French kitten called Minet and a Portuguese rabbit called Rodrigo.

Rebecca, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

psyduck (yay!) and some bloody kitten i can't recall buying evah. probably from a flea market.

Alan at home, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why does this thread scream Hanle y?

anyway ... still have a bunny rabbit from when i was a baby (ears and fur are gone) and a Monchchichi I got as a birthday present from an ex.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Teddy bears. I seem to be slowly accumulating teddy bears. Old ones are the best, especially the melancholy looking ones.

Kim, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. The oldest is a polar bear named, creatively, Polar Bear; my mother ripped out the thread mouth when she gave him to me so I wouldn't choke, and the nose came off sometime in early childhood. Then comes Doll, a doll. I also have Ginger, who thankfully wasn't named "Rag Doll" because her apron had ginger. And an ox beanie baby with really pretty gold horns and shiny fur. That's the memorable stuff.

Maria, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I don't, but did anyone else have an unpc childhood with set of Golliwogs?

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

when i was four my friend aaron gave me a stuffed tiger i creatively named 'hobbes'. i still sleep with him usually.

ethan, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

di, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a tiger called Alexei, a puffin called Puffy, a kitten with no name, a Pikachu called Pika and an echidna called Millie.

toraneko, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a tiger that purrs when you squeeze his bum. I have found that male people in particular turn to mush at the discovery of my purry tiger.

Mascara, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have none at all! Does this make me rockist?

Mark C, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Soft toys are beyond rockism.

Tom, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very similar to Rebecca, I suppose....I decided about the age of nine that I was too old for soft toys and bundled them away in the cupboard somewhere. The exception was Little Bear, who still sits on my parents' mantlepiece, acting as a conservation piece for my mother who must have informed countless visitors about his adventures. He was lost and then found again when I'd thrown him out of my pram outside the greengrocers. Some kind soul handed him in and he was sitting amidst the cabbages and cauliflowers for months before my mother realised that he was there.

I'd love to know what became of the rest. There were two larger bears and an elephant which smelled of lavender for some reason. One of the bears had originally had a red tongue made of felt, which I had pulled off and eaten when I was a toddler. Fortunately, I coughed it up again, so all was well, but of course it was in no fit state to be reattached to its owner and was thrown in the bin. My mother always used to tell people how "Mark swallowed Teddy's tongue," blissfully unaware that this was probably not the best way of telling the tale!

MarkH, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I do. One is called Bunny (original huh?)

They are a part of my past, so I wouldn't get rid of them. They live on top of my wardrobe. Retired but not forgotten.

james, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haf a floppy doggy. He is called "floppy", which causes the more smutty of my friends to indulge in the splutters. But he's the most cuddly dog EVAH! I also have a talking cuddly Pikachu and I really want a Maril. I also haf a cuddly Cyndaquil and Chikorita. I have lots of Pokémon toys, me. The main cuddling partner however is Floppy.

OKAY THEN, HAR!

Sarah, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Garfield (renamed Garfunkel as Garfield is just too common!). I have a scooby doo, he lives on top of my stereo.

james, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have two badgers (small and not small), two clangers (small and big) and a little beanie bagpuss. The clangers are not entirely benign. The small one because its whistling can cause alarm to the unwary and the large one because its snout looms over the head of sleeping companions and gives them the fear.

RickyT, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You won't be suprised to here that I also have: Shaun the Sheep 3 rabbits (2 woollen, 1 not), a small hedgehog, a Beanie duck, a purple cow, and I'm sure I've forgotten something.

Graham, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

here = hear, me = thick

Graham, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Alix's and Sarah's lesbian porn videos"

Please, everyone, be careful to interpret this in context. I've been on her spacehopper a few times, but never anything more. I too have failed to give decent names to my stuffed stuff.I have a gorilla called 'gorilla', teddy bears called 'orange ted' and 'tom ted', a monkey 'cheeky monkey' and a panda 'panda'. My tigers are called 'Grr Arg' and 'greg'. My tiger hood is called 'erky'. However, I think stuffed toys are kind of shit, and pathetic and I only have mine because I've always had them, apart from Grr arg. It's too much like those sad old women who collect teapots.

alix, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

With me in London I have: Grey Bear (not grey), Bert Badger (cool red jacket), S.O.B. (Small and orange, very emotional, hence Sob or Sonofabitch), Speedy (the fastest fox in the world, thanks to streamlined shape), Frog (a bean bag, can't share bed because of leak, has to sit on mantle) and Hamper (a spherical hamster who can change mass at will, becoming weightless or massively heavy on whim, like the robots in Terrahawks). A Cartman, a Tickle-me Cookie Monster and a Beavis tag along, somewhat ashamed of their origins. Beavis's trousers always fall down, which I find oddly embarrassing. In my folks' Winchester attic I have 70 more.

chris, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My Sanrio collection is at the point where I don't even know how many I have now. I also have a little black cat and an Opus doll.

Nicole, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OHHHHH I also have a wuvvly Chococat plush. I am craving an OH MY GODDESS Belldandy plush too. Mmmmm. Want one. At home I also haf a HUGE inherited big blue and white teddy bear and just a regular white teddy bear too who is very cuddly but lives in Preston for when I go back home....

I am now going to scour eBay. For cuddly things. OH I WANT. However I shall not be getting Clangers.

Sarah, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eBay seems to send my computer TO DEATH. This is very, very, very bad.

Sarah, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a small zebra that was given to me at a tech job fair.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A lumpy Snorlax and a cuddly ultra-soft Squirtle. I miss them when at college. :( I also have a Figment (anyone remember this rather unsuccessful Disney character?).

Vinnie, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have many at home, but now I have a sloth beanie baby, a Badtz Maru, a Snork Maiden, a Bagpuss, and Evil Hello Kitty.

rosemary, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am jealous of Sarah's Chococat, I could only ever find a Chococat made out of shiny canvas material and that just would not do.

My recent-est Sanrio acquisition: a rastafari Dear Daniel.

Nicole, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Bagpuss and a sheep with string legs and a tam-o-shanter which Ally gave me. Also a yellow rabbit which I bought from a deaf man in Camden and a little Pumbaa that came in a Happy Meal in Milan.

I have a young neice and nephew, so have given away all but my oldest and most melancholy bear. I think he had a name when I was little (he's probably twice my age though) but I seem to have forgotten it. No wonder then, that he looks so sad.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago)

the only one i had in my apartment was a black teddy bear with a tape thing inside it's tummy. you could say whatever you wanted into the little recorder, then put it back inside. when squeezed, the bear would say whatever you had recorded. currently, it's a snippet of my friend singing 'what a fool believes.'

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Those giant microbes are the best :) I want some!

I have a teddy bear called Edward T Bear, who was given to my mum when she was pregnant with me, so he is older than I am. And I still have him by the bed and would be very distressed if I lost or damaged him.

He's the only really sentimental toy I have though - I have a panolpy of stuffed cartoon toys such as Bubbles, and Garu the little ninja dude, I have an Oscar the grouch somewhere, and a Garfield (who I stuck a bandaid onto to make him look tuff).

I want some more toys too - there's some fantastic Futurama ones like a large rubbery gooey Horrible Gelatinous Blob that has Fry inside his belly! Cool as.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 September 2004 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Those giant microbes are the best :) I want some!

I have "Martian Life," but the one I have my eye on right now is the "Flesh Eating" microbe, which may be the cutest one they've done yet:

A platypus, armadillo, anteater, and a penguin currently guard my storage space.

youn, Monday, 17 March 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

Was the yellow lab really yellow?

'Stuffed animals' is arguably less accurate, but also seems freer of euphemistic potential.
