Just got an e-mail from a friend of mine. His wife is pregnant, but very early on, she got hit by a taxi. The baby's okay, but she had to have major surgery on her leg (and they live in a fourth floor walkup in Brooklyn). Then he wrote this:

Jane's good. She's hobbling around on a cane, although not the one topped with a cobra head I'd suggested. A couple of weeks ago, when she'd just started going outside by herself, still on crutches, she was walking past a group of teenage girls at the high school up the street. One asked her if she had a dollar. Jane said no. The girl said, "Stupid bitch."

In a just world, that girl would have to pick up her teeth from the pavement.
