jess, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

new freezing answers.

jess, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A good thick leather motorcycle jacket fits your criteria and is the warmest thing you can get. Bank!

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A long wool coat alla 1960's style peeps...I have my dad's old coat! the arms a bit short, but it'll do! jel = cheap!

james, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Q: Should I get a parka? The mouldy green thrift store variety I mean.

Graham, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They are selling them in River Island now Graham, so probably not.

james, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What Tracer said.

Sean, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Go to the Army Navy store and buy a Soviet coat, like Wheeler. He seems pretty warm.

Ally, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James, do they come pre moth-eaten?

Graham, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you need lumberjack jacket, flannel, wool lininng, found at thrift shops everywhere, soooo beutiful for winter, esp if you be going NW

Geoff, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get something with Thinsulate(TM) in it. (This answer is in no way motivated by the fact that my father works for 3M.)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Buy a Rab down jacket (made not 10 minutes from where I live). If not that then buy a second hand overvoat, I've had some wonderful camelhair, wool and tweed overcoats in my time from second hand shops and dead people's auctions

Ed, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a navy style pea coy or a carhart barn jacket

anthony, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Pea Coat!!!!!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a parka, it's very black and has a kind of light brown fur on the hood. I think it's ace because it's warm enough that I can just wear a t shirt under it and go clubbing. Also my discman fits in the pocket, which is the first thing you check obviously.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Thrift stores are really the best for coat shopping...since coats are not worn very often (just in cold weather and then you take them off when you're indoors) they're often in fine shape even if they're quite old. Buying a coat brand new is dud unless you're some sort of professional who needs to look supersharp and can afford it.

I am managing very nicely at the moment with just a down vest (which is a handmedown from my mom and is likely older than me). They are stupendously warm, and I chill easily.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Try Filene's Basement or Marshall's. Failing that, try the Army/Navy surplus store on Boylston.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Parkas reek of Oasis so keep well away. A knee-length black/brown cashmere coat is what you need. I got mine on the cheap for 35 quid but don't know how much they are in the shops. I noticed that no one round here (The North) has this coat but when I went to London yesterday the streets were full of folks in similar coats. I didn't feel special any more.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

you must get this one:

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I also really want to photoshop neds head in there.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Just blend my hair with the coat and you're golden.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Become a duffelganger!

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and if you're fed with posing as anna karenina and you keep feeling the urge to jump before trains, buy this one instead...

dakatin, Thursday, 5 December 2002 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess parkas are kind of Oasis. Actually now so many people have them, when I bought mine first people used to make jokes about it but now they're everywhere. It's sad really.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
It's fucking freezing out and I want a parka.
a) Shoudl I?
b) What colour/length/kind should I get.
c) Where the fuck do you get them.

I want one as lovely as Anna's.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My army jacket - five quid because I was freezing at Glastonbury, sorry. But thanks.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i still don't have a fucking coat.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just sent you an e-mail saying this had popped back up. Rather pointless now. Buy a coat.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

coat advice is still welcomed from all quarters, btw - i spent something like 20 hours going round the sales in january without finding a single coat i wanted (benetton had a lovely one that was also dead cheap, but only in the sizes either side of mine, the bastards). it got to the stage where i just wanted to walk into selfridges and say "look, i'm prepared to spend (insert crazy amount of money here) on a coat, just give me something nice", but it was always too busy to find someone to ask.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a lovely one in the sale at Boxfresh, in covent garden. It's sooo warm, and it's got a lovely hood. I do look like the michelin man though, as it's off white and well padded

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's pretty much my budget Anna.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i finally got a good one this year and i havent worn it once because its been 50 degrees most days. it's all a fucking scam!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yowza

Jimmy (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I have a good coat now. I have no coat worries.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You can get good ones up here in sheffield for £35 (good as certified by suzy). Surely parkas are passe now. Camelhair is the future.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a nice duffel coat

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My coat is by Calvin Kline, it's a factory second, I got it in TK Maxx. Seventy quid.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Toggle coats rule u r all gay.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Toggle coats are twee young lady. We'll have none of that nonsense round here.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

My coat looks a lot like the one in Ed's picture, but it has a hood.
I don't wear the hood as I prefer hats, but I like the way it drapes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to sound like a character from 12 Stories, but they really do not make warm coats like they used to. If I were jess (which I am not) I would spend the $200 on a second-hand cashmere or camel hair single-breasted overcoat (the style of Ed's is perfect) of the thickest material you can find. The weave should be almost as tight and thick as boiled wool. A torn lining is a shallow flaw and can be fixed by any old laundromat tailor. However, if the coat is fraying at the edges (showing the weave), that means the material is not thick enough and you should drop it like a cheating ex. Choose wisely, for if you find this holy grail of coats you will have eternal warmth. It will not be easy to find. toby's ongoing quest is completely understandable.

I love the fluffy-trimmed mod army surplus parkas. Again, old is better. They no longer manufacture the metal zipper.

toby, now is a good time to look if you want new. I saw a nice men's Duffer St. George coat the other day with the price slashed crazy low. The tailoring was superb. The material might not be warm enough for a lifetime of North American use but it would probably be fine for London.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

You can get second hand camel hairs for much less than that. Mine was my granddad's and is in such beautiful condition. it has the most gorgeous satin lining. I must take it to be cleaned soon as it is pilling slightly.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i spent 35 dollars on my coat

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

well then you really have no excuse for standing us up at the 2002 Xmas jessFAP.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

diss!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a Camel overcoat very much like the one pictured. Nice quality (Aquascutum I think it was). I got it from that 2nd hand menswear shop in Fulham about six years ago when those coats first became fashionable again. Unfortunately it didn't quite fit right so I sold it to someone else. That's often the problem with vintage clothing I find. People's shapes must have changed subtly.

David (David), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, I do love the jacket. It's all Marlboro Man an' shit.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The secret to staying warm is a big ass fur hood.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

B-but I don't want to put an ass on my head!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I need a black topcoat, but I want it to fit (i.e. it won't go over anything but a shirt). I want to wear it with jeans and a scarf - this may make me look like a lunatic in L.A. Oh well.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

who says anoraks aren't sexy?

Get that weird thing that Gene Hackman wore in 'The Conversation' ... you'd be so pimped out.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

I want a nice, warm downish coat that is cheap. Will something from Old Navy keep me warm in the coming months? I want the kind of thing that goes past my knees--fashion is not the issue--but warmth!

deeznuts, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

i still don't know how i feel abt old navy but my instincts are to say
fuck old navy

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

Mary, unless you really hate shopping, I'd recommend looking at discount places for a coat by a better maker than Old Navy. Try Loehman's, Macy's sales, TJ Maxx, Filene's Basement, Burlington Coat Factory, possib even Syms (Park and 54th) and Century 21 (WTC area) before settling for the absolute cheapest (and worst-made) version.

Luckily Loehman's (7th Ave and...17th St?), TJs and Filene's (in the same building on 6th and 18th) and Burlington (6th and 22nd-ish) are v close together so you could easily do a sweep.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know why, but I have a hankering for a cheap, utilitarian padded jacket to stave off the coming chill--perhaps I could extend my reach to the Gap:)

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 04:42 (seventeen years ago)

Ooh I quite like the three from Paragon (esp the first) but EEP three hundred dollars? I think not.

http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=7430&pid=522664 <-- doesn't look knee-length

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 05:15 (seventeen years ago)

I know, I know. This thread is for coats. What's the deal with vests, though? The idea of owning one for the winter has intrigued me lately (mostly because it seems like it'd be easier to bike in it), but I doubt their keep-warm ability. Looking through the thread, there's one mention of vests. Thoughts, y'all?

PS: That coat above is very nice.

Luna, you lovely woman, will you marry me?

Heave Ho, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 07:07 (seventeen years ago)

m, how cheap is cheap for you? because if you can swing it, then $300 for one of those toasty-looking knee-length down coats from paragon isn't a lot to spend. they look like they're built to last, which is something to consider.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Old Navy's pea coats are like $68! Hella cheap, but everything I get there fades/tears/buttons fall off. I'm still tempted though. It looks OK. n.b. they were playing great music last time I was in there.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

i got a velveteen pea jacket from o.n. for $25. at that price, it doesn't matter if it falls apart or the fabric starts to bald. for my real winter coat, though, i'd want something from a more reliable brand.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

$300 would bankrupt me, I have to say. Hence recommending the sales.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

i want this:

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

i really just need to replace the buttons on my long j. crew coat and get the zipper fixed on my down coat, but i am dragging my feet. i kinda want a military parka.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

Parka Patrol Lindray Doll? I approve!

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

vests are great for running, because your arms are warm from the motion but your stomach and chest can get pretty cold. possibly true for biking as well but your arms are more stationary so i'm not sure.

i want a pretty knee-length plaid coat, myself, but i can't excuse buying one when i do have a hip-length functional coat of the same weight. (i bought it five years ago and it's had buttons and sleeve linings repaired multiple times but i can't bring myself to give it upf or a new one.)

xpost!

Maria, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

I don't really understand vests, I guess the idea is that if your core stays warm, the blood to yr extremities stays heated as well...but for me it's the opposite, my core is TOO WARM and sweats and I need back and shoulder vents, and it's my arms and hands that need extra covering. I should just make arm-warmers for regular wear, shouldn't I.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

laurel, you need something with PIT ZIPS. especially if you are doing winter cycling.

all of the winter coats i have are either functional holdovers from days of working at patagonia or boring black office/funeral wool, i really want something fun and cool looking!

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

This is my new winter coat. The minute I saw it I knew I had to have it.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Machen, I love, but is it WARM enough??

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

any idea how much it costs to get a full-length coat relined? i have one from H&M that i love, but the inside is all messed up, and i'm not sure whether it's worth trying to fix it.

colette, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

top shop always has such wicked coats.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know, Paragon pricing seems a lot for something that is basically so sporty, but if it was guaranteed to keep me warm I might consider it, but then again, I would just get sick of it after wearing it every day . . .

Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

Basically, what is the coat and related headgear that is so warm that I will not even feel the chill outside, yet will miraculously turn light when on the subway--so that I don't overheat.

Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

this is expected to be an above-average winter, temperature-wise

gabbneb, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

It's not all that warm, Laurel, but I walk to work so I don't need much cover. I have a proper parka with furry hood in case the temperature drops. To be honest, last winter was so warm my geraniums all survived being left in their window boxes. They are still in flower just now, actually, as are the roses and hyndrangea. We're all going to climate hell.

Where in London is selling decent medium-to-full length coats at the moment. They seem to be in short supply. Ideally I need one that will look good over a suit, go down at least to the knees and will be wearable in Berlin in December.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

Still use my... six year old... I think... GStar midlength jacket. Fuck buying a new one. I rarely go out and if I do, I usually use the car anyway.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

And then I also bought a midlength one for 60 euros last year.

been looking for a nice coat for ages now with no success - even the ones that on the whole look good and robust and fairly plain but not shapeless or cheap-looking have some crap detail like some stupid pockets or flaps or a massive buckle at the collar
