The Best Dream: An end to Mallard Fillmore

Last night I had a super dream. The space where "Mallard Fillmore" is on the comics page said, "I have realized how bile-filled I am and forgo my ways." The artist quit!

Family Circus is the token "hate" comic, but I hate Fillmore/Mother Goose & Grimm/the Born Loser. Born Loser uses jokes published thirty years ago in "Ann Landers" and "Readers Digest." Mother Goose & Grimm slightly worse: the jokes are original, but awful. And the art is a shameful mess. Fillmore: dream artist hit it on the head, it's BILE FILLED. Plus: it doesn't need to be a comic as mostly it's just Fillmore's awful head saying bile things.

So the unholy triumverate of comics, I have dreamt of them all. Fillmore last night. I once dreamt Hurricane Hattie from "Loser" drowned in sweat, and in the last panel she exhorted me to save her. This was somehow tied in to Cathy & its excessive use of flying sweat tadpoles.

Circus dream: The circle is entirely black and the caption features Jeffy saying, "We're dead, daddy!" This gave me the willies while dreaming, I laughed upon waking. Silly dream.

Comics dreams, do you have them? Mallard Fillmore, is it awful?

dammit i thought mallard fillmore had actually ended for a minute. during the lewinsky scandal some fuckwit starting posting anti-clinton mallard fillmore strips in the post office and i would always tear them down and then one day there was a new strip with a note beside it about liberals trying to supress freedom of speech so i tore that down too. anyway i don't care what else is on the comics page as long as boondocks is still around.

Comics dreams, do you have them?

I don't know if

Comics dreams, do you have them?

I don't know if the dream from oct 7th on this page counts - all it was is I dreamd Renee French (comics artist I like but haven't seen much by) was male instead of female.

Mallard Filmore can suck deze nutz. Man, was that ever an embarassing Sunday morning. ("Oh, hi honey! Um, this isn't what it looks like...")

NOTE: No nutz have ever actually been sucked by Mallard Fillmore, especially not deze.

What I hate almost as much as Mallard Fillmore itself is what the fact that it is in my small home town's paper (along with the other two in the unholy trinity) says about the political attitudes of most of the assholes there. And they still stick Doonesbury in the opinion section, while satan's pet duck is allowed to fraternize with the rest of the shitty comix. At least they have Doonesbury I guess...

What truly bugs me about Mallard Fillmore isn't that it's right-wing so much as it's not funny. Bruce Tinsley never tries for anything as ambitious as a punchline, or whimsy, or weirdness. The best he can do is offer the weakest, thinnest of ironies: his perpetually exasperated duck might offer a variation of "you can't make this stuff up!," or straightforwardly point out a bit of liberal hypocrisy, or simply look more exasperated. Where's the yuk-yuks in that?

Most UK comic strips are fucking shit, to the point where they insert drawings of naked women in to liven things up (George & Lynne being the most obvious (and smuggest) example, and Garth, and sometimes that 3-D computer generated thing about football).

I think that this Mallard thing would be a lot better if in every strip a naked woman constantly punched this duck repeatedly in the face for four frames (if that's the format, I've never seen it so I wouldn't know) shouting "YOU ARE FULL OF BILE AND YOU MUST FOREGO YOUR WAYS!"

i think "insertz" somewhat understates the wall-to-wall omnipresence presence of womanly nakedness in George and Lynne: back in the *LATE 70s* when I were a *NIPPER* and feminism were just a spangle on luce irigaray's speculum we wd SHOUT WIV LARFTER at how blatant yet pitiful was the pretext for Lynne's lissome nudité. ie zero always (george = naked also mind since all sunreaders = "poofs or paedos" ©Toraneko)
