Clothing Advice needed

There's no getting away with it: I am a scruffy git. I have terrible, terrible taste in clothing. Excluding the suit I got to get married in most of my clothing wouldn't pass in charity-shops (from whence they largely came). My shoes are falling apart, my trousers are threadbare, my jumpers (need I say more) holed and stained.

The prospect of clothes shopping fills me with the sort of dread usually reserved for trips to the dentist. But words have been sproken/complaints have been heard, I need, really need, some new clothes. So given some of the fashionable types hanging around here if you had about 300 quid to buy some new threads what would you buy? Advice desperately needed.

Are you US or UK or NZ, Stevo?
If UK - good stuff at Greenwich market (zip up tops for autumn), and a bloody good shoe shop in Golders Green ('Golds') where I got Adidas shell-toes for £20. Portobello Road of a Saturday does some mean leather jackers, first hand or second hand if you're going for a more 'indie' look.
If you're after a smarter look, The Face in Beak Street W1 does nice suits and shirts, which have a pleasing 60s cut (personal preference)

Will- the hot-bed of fashion that is the Netherlands, but thankx all the same. Does wearing Leather Jackets well into one's 30s = sad old gitdom? Judging from quick IL* search fear of clothes shopping is not unusual anyhow.

Don't worry Stevo - leather jackets rock whatever age you are. Especially long ones.

Well I can tell you what not to get. I'm shooting a line of denim shirts and jackets this morning that have various holiday themes appliqued on them. Little santas, sleighs, etc. They scream middle- aged teacher, soccer mom. horrible.

Legwarmers!

I am going to take over EVERY THREAD!!!! With legwarmers!!! Oh dear god, help. I R gorn mad BUT! haf done some REAL WORK and feel quite a worthy person. I shall celebrate by leg-warmer shopping except I think the best ones would be in charity shops in Camden. Mmm.

My hairdresser was wearing nuclear red leg warmers on Saturday. I would say BALLET SHOPS would be cheapest.

Today I was taken to lunch by Vogue editor. Afterwards I went to a secret charity shoppe and picked up a cool shirt for £4. Brava!

Nuclear red leg warmers it is then. Should go well with the Adidas shell-toes, + long leather jacket. Might draw a few curious looks but thats the price you pay for being fashionable. I guess.
