JUST YOU AND ME

GRACE AND PEACE AND LOVE FROM THIS PART OF THE ATLANTIC TO YOU. I HOPE MY LETTER DOES NOT CAUSE YOU TOO MUCH EMBARRASSMENT AS I WRITE TO YOU IN GOOD FAITH.PLEASE EXCUSE MY INTRUSION INTO YOUR PRIVATE LIFE.

I AM BARRISTER CYRIL DUNAKA, I REPRESENT MOHAMMED ABACHA, SON OF THE LATE GEN. SANI ABACHA, WHO WAS THE FORMER MILITARY HEAD OF STATE IN NIGERIA. HE DIED IN 1998. SINCE HIS DEATH, THE FAMILY HAS BEEN LOOSING ALOT OF MONEY DUE TO VINDICTIVE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WHO ARE BENT ON DEALING WITH THE FAMILY. BASED ON THIS THEREFORE,THE FAMILY HAS ASKED ME TO SEEK FOR A FOREIGN PARTNER WHO CAN WORK WITH US AS TO MOVE OUT THE TOTAL SUM OF US$75,000,000.00 (SEVENTY FIVE MILLION UNITED STATESDOLLARS ), PRESENTLY IN THEIR POSSESSION. THIS MONEY WAS OF COURSE, ACQUIRED BY THE LATE PRESIDENT AND IS NOW KEPT SECRETLY BY THE FAMILY. THE SWISS GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY FROZEN ALL THE ACCOUNTS OF THE FAMILY IN SWITZERLAND, AND SOME OTHER COUNTRIES WOULD SOON FOLLOW TO DO THE SAME. THIS BID BY SOME GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO DEAL WITH THIS FAMILY HAS MADE IT NECESSARY THAT WE SEEK YOUR ASSISITANCE IN RECEIVING THIS MONEY AND IN INVESTING IT ON BEHALF OF THE FAMILY. THIS MUST BE A JOINT VENTURE TRANSACTION AND WE MUST ALL WORK TOGETHER.SINCE THIS MONEY IS STILL CASH, EXTRA SECURITY MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO PROTECT ITFROM THEFT OR SEIZURE, PENDING WHEN AGREEMENT IS REACHED ON WHEN AND HOW TO MOVE IT. I HAVE PERSONALLY WORKED OUT ALL MODALITIES FOR THE PEACEFUL CONCLUSION OF THIS TRANSACTION. THE TRANSACTION DEFINITELY WOULD BE HANDLED IN PHASES AND THE FIRST PHASE WILL INVOLVE THE MOVING OFUS$25,000,000.00( TWENTY FIVE MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS).

MY CLIENTS ARE WILLING TO GIVE YOU A REASONABLE PERCENTAGE OF THIS MONEY AS SOON AS THE TRANSACTION IS CONCLUDED. I WILL, HOWEVER,BASED ON THE GROUND THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK WITH US AND ALSO ALL CONTENTIOUS ISSUES DISCUSSED BEFORE THE COMMENCEMENT OF THIS TRANSACTION.

YOU MAY ALSO DISCUSS YOUR PERCENTAGE BEFORE WE START TO WORK. AS SOON AS I HEAR FROM YOU, I WILL GIVE YOU ALL NECESSARY DETAILS AS TO HOW WE INTEND TO CARRY OUT THE WHOLE TRANSACTION. PLEASE, DO NOT ENTERTAIN ANY FEARS,AS ALL NECESSARY MODALITIES ARE IN PLACE, AND I ASSURE YOU OF ALL SUCCESS AND SAFETY IN THIS TRANSACTION.

PLEASE, THIS TRANSACTION REQUIRES ABSOLUTE CONFIDENTIALITY AND YOU WOULD BE EXPECTED TO TREAT IT AS SUCH UNTIL THE FUNDS ARE MOVED OUT OF THIS COUNTRY.PLEASE, YOU WILL ALSO IGNORE THIS LETTER AND RESPECT OUR TRUST IN YOU BY NOT EXPOSING THIS TRANSACTION, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED.

I LOOK FORWARDS TO WORKING WITH YOU AND PRAY THAT THE YEAR 2001 WILL BRING US ALL BOUNTIFUL HARVEST.

THANK YOU.

TRULY YOURS

Dunaka

jess, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got it too. Fuckin hell. Is it all ILE yeah?

Ronan, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Weird! I just got one from 'M.M. Sese-Seko', who claims to be Mobutu's widow. I'd put it up here but I deleted it before seeing this thread.

dave q, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

me too! i wondered where that had come from.

gareth, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got one as well.

RickyT, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dog-bites-man fact: it is fake (and has in various forms bin plasguing the net for abt six months: my work colleague C first received it in june or so, tho at that time i think the deceased was still some unknown, not a well known blood-drenched dictator)

mark s, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I got my first letter printed in a comic book I got a scam junk mail from Nigeria with a similar story - this is old as the oldest hills I suspect.

Tom, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I first saw something similar in 1998.

RickyT, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen several of these, and read an interesting article about them only last week. They estimate that almost 1 in every hundred recipients (though this was in the days when it was distributed as a fax/letter, rather than email) falls for the scam. If you fall for it hard enough, not only is all your cash at risk, but your life too. Further on down the scam's timeline, you are invited to go to Nigeria, where you are kidnapped and forced to hadn over further details and/or held to ransom. At least one death is known as a result of these letters.

It was probably in the Guardian - see if you can find it on their website if you're interested.

Mark C, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

recent private eye, I think, in at the back

Ed, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Private Eye - much more likely. I have a subscription. It's a wonderful thing.

Mark C, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, been loads of these going round for years...

this site is quite funny - they pretend to fall for the scam, and then get the nigerian behind it to stupid things etc

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yup, me too - i sent it to yahoo abuse, it seemed to come from one of their accnts...does this mean we're gonna be rich? rich enough to finance the ILE movie?

Geoff, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh! I got that too! They stopped writing when I suggested it looked very similar to a scam on an urban legends website, they didn't seem to be pleased about that.

DG, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

more details on the Nigerian '419' scams

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I just got that today and was going to post to the junk mail thread about it. At least I read the whole thing, I'll give them that much.

Samantha, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not received similar email before = internet newbie ...?

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm kind of surprised I did get it b/c I search and destroy spam and avoid web email that gets a lot of it, use filters, etc. In fact I can't think of the last time I got spam at my yahoo address. . .

Samantha, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got it too. Also had something very similar the other day at my other address. Was quite amused/bemused. See below.

ATTENTION:

I got your contact address through internet browsing in my search for a reliable an trustworthy person who will assist me in a business investment venture in your country. I am MRS. CELIA Y. ESTRADA the wife of MR. JOSEPH ESTRADA the former president of Philliphines located in the Southeast Asia.

My husband was recently impeached from office by a backed uprising of mass demostrators and the senate. The present government is forcing my husband out of Manila to avoid demostration by his supporters. During my husband regime as president of Philliphine, I realised millions of dollars from various contract projects I executed successfully. I have plans to invest this money for my children's future on real estate and industrial production. My husband is not aware of this becaus I wish to do it secretly for now.

Before my husband was impeached, I concretly and secretly deposited this money and declared it as SOLID GOLD BAR with a security company that transports valuable goods conssignments through a diplomatic courier services to their adhoc offices. The conssignments (boxes) I declared owned by m foreign business partner. I wish to give you 20% out of the total sum if you will be willing to assist me claim this money and invest the money as I assure you of risk free business transaction. I am trusting you as God fearing person that you will not sit on my funds when it gets into your account but rather assist me in this business venture.

This business demands absolute secrecy and confidentiality so all communication for now shall be through email because my lines are connected to the Philliphines Telecommunucation Network Services.

I will furnish you with more details (documents) when I received your positive response.

Thanks.

Celia Estrada.

>not received similar email before = internet newbie ...?

I have never had anything like this. I have an inferiority complex about the fact that I get no spam hardly at all, despite being online for a fair while. No spam surely = does not exist? A couple of people have suggested that because I primarily use my university email, it is being filtered out for me, but surely this can't be the case? I am very cautious about anything I have to register/sign into (on the basis of the same principle that prevents me from having a supermarket loyalty card) - could that be it?

Ellie, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I mainly use my work e-mail and it's handily filtered out for me, which is lovely, although I did get an attack of those pesky spycam adverts earlier, now I've updated my browser to something a little less pre-historic which'll actually run scripts.

Yes - I hardly ever give my work email address out on the web, so I get virtually no spam on it. Whereas even with filtering I get a ton of it on Hotmail and Yahoo. But if you're unlucky Ellie, someone will trawl ILE sooner or later and get your address from your postings here.

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the way it starts "you and me" — if it continued "two mixed-up kids in a crazy world" i might have sent something

mark s, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ellie: Although you may be cautious about not spreading your name, your university most likely filters most junk mail anyway. I give out my e-mail address somewhat frequently, and I rarely ever receive junk mail on my Virginia Tech account. The university is extremely good at filtering and I've only ever received two pieces of junk mail in two years here.

Vinnie, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got this damned thing too. Was tempted to write back saying 'fuck off, I'm tellin' Ken Wiwa on you".
