This is the thread to talk about the results trickling in from the Canadian federal election 2004. Newfoundland results starting to come in, with vote counts of like, 11 or 6. Nothing too major yet but it's a-coming.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

And... it's a four-way tie!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

7:21 Liberals leading in 4, Conservatives in 0. That could change at any time because it's still pretty early.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

voting is fun!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

is there a handy website you're checking, sean? cbc or summat?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you vote for the Marijuana Party, s1ocki?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Globe says Liberals leading in 5, Conservative in 1.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Liberals now declared elected in Rnadom-Burin-St.George's, in Newfoundland. Seems rather early for that, but what the heck.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i had a tv. maybe my neighborhood bar will be broadcasting results.

Symplistic (shmuel), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Conservatives declared elected in St. John's North, another Liberal elected in Humber - St. Barbe - Baie Verte.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Liberals now declared elected in Bonavista-Exploits.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

8pm eastern:
Liberals elected in 5, leading in 11
Conservatives elected in 3, leading in 4
NDP leading in 2

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

halifax - mcdonough is in. no big shock.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you following on TV also, Sean?
CBC says Lib :20, C: 7, NDP:4 (elected or leading)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's great that after the merger of the right and everything - support for the libs has increased on the east coast (as it seems so far).

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, have spent the last hour or so troubleshooting my digital TV terminal. Watching CTV now, but flipping back and forth. Glad the NDP is still doing so well out on the east coast! Elected in three so far!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

After some of Harper's past comments about the Maritimes, it's not a surprise that the Conservatives are faring poorly.

BanjoMania (Brilhante), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rolling"

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say they've also bought into the Liberals "A vote for the NDP is a vote for Harper as PM" rhetoric.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like Harper is suffering from the "culture of defeat" on the east coast.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So far so good for the PM, but as soon as it hits the Manitoba border it's going to get a hell of a lot tougher for him.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, i don't think so barry. the ndp also seem to be doing beter out east.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

& more good news - scott brison is in.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's true that the NDP are up 6% in Atlantic Canada from the last election (compared to the Libs 3%) -- but that still doesn't mean that they haven't lost votes to the Liberals.
Look at it this way -- this is a strong region for the NDP, but they have 21% of the popular vote, which is more or less what they poll nationally.
(xpost)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

you're right - the ndp may be down by a seat.
this has been the trend for the ndp of late - more votes (up 6%) and less seats. ontario ndp are in a sad state now as a result.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(the boring part of any election night ... nothing new for some time, nothing decided in the big picture ... time to cook some food, methinks)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't go, Barry! The Bloc are going to be in the lead before too much longer!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

They're on the board -- leading in one seat! Don't worry, I can still hear the TV from the kitchen.

(Rick Mercer just did a monologue and made fun of the voting process. Can you imagine Chris Rock appearing on CNN to do a bit during election night in November? I don't think so. This is reason #87594 why Canada rules)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you vote for the Marijuana Party, s1ocki?

National Pots fans can check http://www.canada.com/national/features/decisioncanada/index.html

sean loves pot!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i think i ended up voting bloc pot in the last (provincial) election!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

scott brison is in
And he just RIPPED into Stephen Harper during his acceptance speech. I changed my mind -- the lifting of the blackout is a positive thing.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That Rick Mercer thing was CLASSIC if only now I can say to friends who didn't vote, "Pffft, you're PRO-EVIL!!!"

Actually, I've never ever smoked pot. I think the National Post editors have smoked their fair share, though, based on some of their headlines over the last few weeks.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, it is looking very early like the strategic voting masses were out in full force.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

only 10 more minutes till the real results start flowing...

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

goddam i hate the bloc.

chrisco (chrisco), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now the NDP is at 7 leading or elected, which is the same as the Conservatives. Whoops, back to 6. Oh well.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: these analysts on CBC (strategists from the respective parties) -- you can tell which party they're with just by LOOKING at them.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

For the benefit of us non-Canadians, what's the difference?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine is running the campaign of the 18yo NDP candidate for Eglington-Lawrence. They're going to get crushed (apparently that's the norm though)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit, the Marxist Leninist party is reported ahead in Mississauge East - Cooksville!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Marxist-Leninist guy is leading in Missisauga east -- 2 polls reporting!
28-21(xpost!!!)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be incredibly cool if the Marxist-Leninist guy won...not that I think we should go ML up here, but it would certainly be more interesting than those other bozos!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's how to follow the race to see if the commie gets in!
http://www.cbc.ca/canadavotes/riding/155/

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned:
Conservative: early 30's, blond preppy guy with glasses, dapper suit, looks who showed up to his 1st year basket weaving with a laptop and a shirt and tie, while everyone else showed up in shorts and t-shirt with two sheets of paper and a broken pencil.
Liberal : older guy, late 50's, smug facial expressions, looks like one of PM Paul Martin's poker buddies.
New Democrat : mid-40's female, dressed professionally, constantly has a "I'm better than all of you and this petty bickering is above me" look on her face.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Early, early result : Jack Layton is trailing by 38 votes!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That could change dramatically as more polls come in, I think. Most of the neighborhoods I've seen here in Toronto-Danforth have had pretty even signage, but more Layton in a lot of the ridings. There's only 2 ridings in so far...I'm still predicting that my man Jack Layton will rise above all the hatin'.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I was just joking around, 36 votes means nothing with 1% of the votes counted ...

Liberals are kicking ass right now in the early results ... if it still looks like this in 20 minutes, the election is over.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Gay Mayor when I was in Winnipeg. But I decided not to get it on with him.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Sean, ... wow, Cadman dominated in his riding.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly you guys understand why I just don't dig Sask lately? (but at least the dangerous fruitcakes like P@nkiw and Sp3nc3r got turfed)

in other news, the first 2 tracks of tM3's new album are really good, and as I write, the third track is maintaining.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The NDP back up to 21....They could still take Palliser in Saskatchewan, it's literally down to a handful of votes. They retook the lead in New Westminster.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really surprising how many of these ridings are being won with 100 or so votes or less. there are going to be an awful lot of automatic recounts here.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Newton - North Delta is still close in three directions. The NDP was in third recently, and now they're back in the lead. Still a lot of polls to count there though.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Vancouver Island North is now in the Conservatives' hands but only by 4 votes.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, I'm looking at old data on the Newton North Delta. Looks like it's gone Conservative. Bah.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The logjam has broken in Trinity Spadina! Olivia's closing in! Down to 750 votes!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Palliser's me. I really hope Procter can pull this out.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

or ProctOr even.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

olivia update: less than 300 back¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless the last poll is really heavilly skewed to NDP not likely Huck...it looks like Conservative is 100 seats ahead now instead of just 8.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oops - that's 3,000¡
shit

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still seeing Olivia about 750 back...?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost obviously

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I just can't believe my province has gone so (seemingly) whole-heartedly to the right. Like without really a stop in the middle. I guess Lorne Calvert is likely to blame. A lot of people are really pissed off at the provincial NDP right now.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

okay she's about 900 away
xpost

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Now it's 1100. DO NOT DOUBT ELECTION PREDICTION PROBABILITY THEORY.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

NOOOOO, Lorne Nystrom lost to another smug grinning Conservative????!?!?!?!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, a grinning little teeny-bopper. but the bonnie and clyde of racism and bigotry, p@nkiw and sp3nc3r are gone, never to be heard from again, and for that, at least, I am thankful (also very thankful that S.H. won't be hiring a moving van)

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Olivia's closing in again, under 1000 votes.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

with 19 polls left - i don't think she's gonna be able to do it man.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Liberal 135, NDP 22. (Bloc 54.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Conservatives 96

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

So, uh, what happens now? Do the Liberals do everything they can to keep the Bloc and NDP onside?
I can't see the NDP siding with the Tories (though they're not really Tories, they're that other thing), and I can't see the Tories siding with the Bloc, so the Liberals, who have always sort of been elected on the basis of their common-groundedness, are in for some hard work.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

grits & ndp. unless there's some shocks in the recounts - that's what we'll have.
and yes. lots n lot of hard hard work.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Not having a majority might at least keep the Liberals a little more honest.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(as in not being kleptos, I meant.)

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Grits + NDP = 154 now ... one seat short! Well, we'll see if this holds up once the smoke clears and the recounts are done.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

as in now we find out why they call it a whip.

shit, xpost.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

arrgh

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i really wanted hedy fry and john reynolds to lose

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, fuck the libs for their strategic vote shit, and JESUS CHRIST, FUCK THE GREENS. It's not a simple 1+1, I know, but when Nanaimo-Alberni, Victoria, Vancouver Island-North, New-West-Coq, are decided by so little, a massive amount of blame needs to be sent in the way of that bunch of status-quo, eco-capitalist, immature, unanalytical, oppositionally-defiant dolts.

blech. I'm in Van-East, which Libby took by a landslide, which was heartening. I spent 14 hours scrutineering in a pool that we won by some 85 percent. fun times.

LIB+NDP = 154
CON+BLOC = 153

CHUCK CADMAN = THE FATE OF THIS PARLIAMENT.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

he used to be reform or something, didn't he¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yup.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

christ.

so are we going to see a recount anywhere¿ could the status of any seat change¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Proctor's officially out.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

New-West-Coq was settled by 45 votes. I'm not sure what the rules are concerning automatic recounts, but that one surely qualifies.
But has any seat in a recent election turned after a recount? I can't recall -- they're pretty good at getting these things right.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

what should be interesting is to see if the goddamned newspapers (and other media) finally get off the pollsters' cocks.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

any result with less than a .1% difference gets recounted. so if there were 50,000 votes counted, a 50 vote difference would mean a mandatory recount.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"New-West-Coq"

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking idiot vote-splitting paul martin moherfucking. It would have taken a very small difference to make this election much much better. The BQ certainly is being gentlemanly about their new omnipotence, though: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040629.elduceppe29/BNStory/specialDecision2004/

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, anyone know if there are any recounts going on?

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i think there's 3-5 that should be getting recounted but when that happens i have no idea.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, recounts in New-West-Coq(heh) and Western Arctic, which was only a 52 vote difference, I believe, between the Libs and NDP.

and the NDP shutout in Sask. Crazy.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

crazy shitty

Symplistic (shmuel), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

BC results bode well for our provincial race next May, though. We were a close second in all the island seats we didn't win, and were close too in the Kootenays. Strong second places through the lower Mainland, esp. Surrey, are heartening.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the left-of-right needs to unite now to stop all the vote-splitting that will inevitably lead to a Stephen Harper majority.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
derrick made some very accurate predictions on this thread
