When you're in conversation and somebody is talking, do you listen, or do you wait to talk yourself?

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The latter. But it's the worst habit ever. I'm a terrible listener. Active my ass.

Kim, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If anyone's listening, new answers...

Will, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I listen, listen, listen, then listen some more, then need prodding with a sharpened twig straight through into my vitreous humor to get me to respond in a sentence-type fashion. I nod like an attentive bobble-head doll, too. I'm a frighteningly good listener.

What Dave said...

Nicole, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sorry, what were you saying? I was too busy thinking of my new answer.

Samantha, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm usually already breaking into the conversation, so I guess the answer would be neither.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wait to talk, but that's if the other person can get a word in edgeways. It's almost always about me or sex, or sex with me.

It depends on who I'm talking with and what the subject is, but maybe a little more wait to talk.

Sean, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, it depends wholly on who I am talking to. Some people, there is no need to actually listen.

Ally, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I get very irked when, in an argument/discussion type of situation, someone starts an argument with an obvious falsity, such as, "Well, since the sky is green, then it follows that blah blah blah. . ." And you want to just stop them right there so you don't have to listen to a ten-minute analysis that's wrong from the very beginning, but if you try to cut in and correct them, they get all "Let me finish!" on you.

Not that that answers the question, but that happened to me like 10 times the other night, so I wanted to address it.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sometimes I listen, sometimes I just wait to talk. Sometimes I just jump in before someone has finished. If it's a serious converstaion, I always try to listen and give as measured response.

james, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

See, I cut in even before Will had a chance to do his new answers thing. Woe, I is bad.

Kim, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mostly I just listen and never talk. The one exception in poetry workshops in which I get very antsy if I can't make my brilliant point.

bnw, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, a bit of both. People think I am a terrible listener, which is not strictly true - details will burrow into my brain to come out later shocking many impartial viewers of me. But yes, I am a bit of a gobshite so I am usually thinking up my next bon mot.

Pete, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wackyparsed the second part as "do you want to talk?"

I generally listen because it's the path of least resistance. However, when I try to talk, I tend to be too polite and shut up when people butt in on what I'm trying to say. Then next thing I know the conversation has gotten lightyears away from what I was trying to talk about. I'm a poor conversationalist to begin with and this tends to just take me further along the vicious circle. Bleah.

two years pass...
I've bee trying really really hard to be a good listener recently. I think I may be succeeding. Girls seem to like it.

Girls love it. It helps if you can doze with yr eyes open.
