Um, don't know her personally but in writing CR strikes me as an annoying twunt.
Was talking to an editor who used to work on the fashion desk at the Guardian. Someone on top brass at the Guardian who says these things are frivolous to feel more personally serious told this very good writer she was a shit writer when sacking her just before her two years were up (dodgy labour practice to avoid contractual obligations). My friend replied, 'so that'll be why you awarded me Young Fashion Writer of the Year, then?' Guardian policy has no rhyme or reason. And it's supposed to be the liberal paper; everyone I know has gone over to the supposedly conservative broadsheets where they pay well and play nice.

(for the record I am pro-European for my own reasons, but anti- Americanism is not one of them: most EU countries are far too Americanised for Toynbee's reasoning in favour of the EU to make sense.)
Oh and the answer to the question? Unspeakably dud, especially when she is writing about David Beckham, Torquay, Princess Diana, Eastbourne, John Peel or Llandudno. I actually have a 1984 NME article where, having crucified Peel as ever, she cites *Gary Davies* (or, as she pompously calls him, "Mr Gary Davies") as one of the few listenable Radio 1 DJs. Fool.

The only "rabidly anti-American" societies that Europe has ever seen, as I understand the term, were the ones which believed that capitalism and pop culture had to be controlled by the state to stop them supposedly destroying the national integrity. That was the model of Communist societies, which was largely overthrown in 1989 and 1990. Of course, the Taliban has become the kind of "opposite / refusal / denial of the Western world" in the public mind that Communism once was. But if Belgium *was* "rabidly anti-American", the records I mentioned upthread would be banned by the state. Their success says more about what the people of Belgium (OK, mainly the young people, but their chart has been predominately Anglo-American for decades) aspire to than anything some foreign minister could say.
This statement seems to indicate that we are talking completely at cross purposes. Once again, I know very little about Belgian cultural attitudes, but nothing you have said so far convinces me that Toynbee's assertion is necessarily untrue. On the basis of previous things you've said, it sounds to me like you are violently opposed to any statements about a national or regional population's characteristics (or perhaps more accurately, tendencies - see Tom's post above).

French anti-Americanism = paranoia about "preservation of the language", broadly (the closest we get is the fringes of Welsh nationalism): FWIW, with the influence of the more English-speaking Low Countries, the Belgian chart has always been *much* more Anglo- American than the French one. I get your point about people not having a coherence of opinion on these things, and certainly my own tastes don't necessarily reflect my cultural, social and political priorities in private life (I'd be surprised if the two go exactly together for *anyone* on these forums), but surely anyone who really passionately subscribed to the "Great Satan" view of America would be turned off by the bands I mentioned? I'm not thinking of people who lazily peddle "anti-globalisation" cliches, or those on both the left and right who hark back to the days before mass globalisation out of sentimentality, but people for whom anti-Americanism is almost a religion, in the way it was for Communists (wasn't your father in the Communist Party, Gareth?) and is now for the Taliban.

Holed up in the Strongbox Studio, Dagenham, Liquid Faces are recording their new single. It's called Clouds Like Dolphins and guest vocalist Janeen is working on the lyrics with producer Grueff Lonstruud, aka Bassdeath 3001, perched in the broom cupboard/office over a Nescafe and Rothmans.
"it's about how clouds become dolphins in your dreams," says Janeen to me, helpfully. "I was thinking," says Greuff, chewing a green biro,
"clouds like dolphins/
dive into the sky/
your love is an ocean/
take me high/
high....
er...."
The lyrics done, we move onto the track, Greuff presses some buttons randomly on his oberheim deumellmeister mixing desk and trance effluent pours out of the speakers: so cheesy, jobbing and predictable that it makes dario g sound like black sabbath.
"We're thinking top 20 on this single: Fragma territory," says Oxygen Records' executive/liquid faces manager mike small. perched on a box of remaindered promos for the last single. In the 90s, mike discovered haddaway and dr alban, helping make them the household names they are today.
Janeen prepares to record her vocals, warming up with throat exercises that sound like a fork jamming a waste disposal. "This is going to be shit," says greuff, looking instantly pleased, safe in his sound-proof box. "doesn't matter. we fix her with an auto-tune, same as posh spice on the dane bowers tune"
Clouds like dolphins is genius, preched strategically between atb's on the beach, planet funk's chase the sun and a dog turd. The lyrics remind me of the theme from rainbow "up above the streets and houses/ rainbow climbing high/ everyone can see it climbing/ over the sky" but minus the existential depth. The night comes for liquid faces feat. janeen's debut PA at the camden palace. I speak to janeen, clad touchingly in a catsuit made of tiny mirrors, each one reflecting the distorted faces of gurning peach regulars, extruded into a thousand munch screamers. The backing thrack splutters into life and janeen begins to sing. A frighteningly unpredictable warble, veering wildly in pitch and heading for catastrophe on the word "high...er." It matters little. The crowd are cowed by drugs. One man lies face down in vomit, inches from where janeen attempts to sing. She shuffles carefully to avoid treading on his head. As liquid faces reach up for fame, the rest of us do our best to hold on to the contents of our stomachs. It's us and them, and janeen is still, alas, one of us. Can I just say that "Slave to the Rythmn" is one of the best m0therfux!ng rekords ever made and that I really hate UK garage? Thank you.x0x0― N0rm4n Phay, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Linkin Park are absolutely horrendous shite of the first order. Can't fucking stand them. However, I *do* like a lot of other music that is bound up with American values I disapprove of. My point - albeit one targeted at journalists who don't read this forum, unless I'm much-mistaken - is that the success of that odious band, and others of their ilk, in supposed heartlands of European social democracy shows that they are going to have to find other, more convincing, pro-EU arguments.
Actually, let's drop this thread now, shall we? Until Polly Toynbee turns up here, it's pretty much useless.

Quite.
Decent enough piece but alas there is no Polish facility on Babelfish WHAT CENTURY ARE YOU LIVING IN DINOSAURS so I had to translate it into Russian and back again:
RECENTLY, the new form of the policy of envy raised its ugly head - the unbridled jealousy Of chavs with the available money. And the largest to go the purposes, of course, Of wayne Of rooney and Coleen Of mcLoughlin. Not even wedding of this 2 young people - both 22- make their tormentors rear on a little days. In actuality, the wedding only increased the level of perpendicular spite these youngsters they inspire into those old and imaginarily obrazovanno sufficiently in order to know more better, which were reduced to gloating above the fact it went rain on the happy pairs during their marriage into Portofino. It is despondent or that? Yes, Chavs with the available money actually brings out of green-eyed of monster in the elegant in any way- markers which half made poor of men also, as they thought that they o, in spite of safety net a pay- for the formation. Both Wayne and Coleen at present foremost achieved success by its forces scapegoat being of pelted with the buckets of acid grapes from confetti would be simultaneously more sootvestvuyushchim. But nasty mockeries speak far more about those which they make their than pairs of their inoffensive little-ones they direct on. So they spent much money on their wedding! Large transaction. Together with those times they were poor 14 year old, Wayne and Coleen earned each last pound they splurged for the magnificently advanced celebrations by their own efforts. Is not similar on to shameless parasites in the parliaments and the palaces which leech from ostalnoev us, taxpayer never entrusted one penny to either Wayne or Coleen which they did not select to give. If only we had the same freedom, it was which necessary to select, the bankroll we not working Of mPs and royals we support in the type to which they were accustomed on our earned by hard work wages! Wayne and Coleen cursed if they make cursed, then if they do not make. If they had gras and roe of foie on their that having dinner of wedding, then they were slated as jumped-up imitators - instead of, they had pitstsu, which prove that they general as manure. If there was grinning the cackle of the guests of celebrity, then Coleen would be accused search for the glossy calculated day of cassette. But because they were exactly family, friends several of the comrades upon command Of rooney, Coleen were suspected pull up nose another it wags! When Coleen of vein from Wayne, it was pilloried as parasite. Now, when it causes by journalist, it izdevana on as the joke. When it was schoolgirl in the elbow- noses edges, it was nasmekhana to as frump. Now it laughs the studio of the modes of wear, ukhmylka of mag-hags it any of Audrey Hepburn. Sluchaino, when Coleen selected actress as her icon of the type and made photoshoot which it reconstructed it in clothing and ideas Of hepburn of the memorable, this proved maneuvers for the form of saddo which it does not have anything the more better to make than it fawns above the sweaty screen entire day oshlakovyvaya from the harmless small girl to play dresses -upward. Personally, I think that by Audrey Hepburn of overrated way - majorities people which as it blue, they do know it or not, and the majorities of women which as it do not love sex. (I it said LARGE PART!) It was, finally lifelong bulimic (something which droning of idiots on near it “the exquisite of slenderness” could fall in love with to examine) who assumed upward that repelling to be working from its husbands. She said into 1959: “I hated in some periods - I was too fat, either too possible tall or possibly exactly it is too ugly.” You will have a talk about the error of dysmorphia of body and the low self-esteem - hardly healthy role model. Not, if I had a daughter, then I far sufficiently it turned out of as down-to-earth Of coleen. How for Wayne, it is true that it any scientific worker of rocket - but we is expected, that the scientific workers of rocket will be large football players? It hated because although elegant of papers pine frequently for the good old days of tail end and sides of brevity and external toilet, they are frankly stupefied by any which it regards the old-fashioned person of the working class, which Rooney makes. The most beautiful game was sufficient poncified above the past decade period, with each ball- kicking by cretin you can shake red card to aspiring to be the reader of metrosexual/continental/a of the blue of icon/a of guardian. And Rooney resembles never many unstable football fans of middle class that their precious game truly will be understood by them - as religion it is sufficient than science. You can easily occur that it stood together with Bobby Charlton and Stiles Of nobby in the uvyadannom old black-and-white photo- and that make we-be-vs- classless -now brigade to feel as delicate Sissi they. Rooneys there are no Beckhams, but everything are more and is more this a plus sufficiently than a minus, as elegant and Dosh more and more greatly appear as seksualn the mismatched mannequins of shop-window. They have also, to go to America, proven there any larger passionate worshipper than star on the slip. Although Rooneys to happy play the game of means for the pleasure and the profit, you obtain no feeling to them are in any event “necessary” we. You feel that they they could sufficiently happy make without completely that substance, is not similar to Beckhams for which publicity oxygen. This could in the best way be the part of the reason why means they have it inside for them. Each loves to feel Col of necessary but Wayne of ' n to seem by sufficient for odina of other, to be given or to start old Slapper or 2. it as the old song Of millwall - “no one similarity we, we worry!” - actually uses never k im. (whereas Beckhams will not probably obtain to the past “no one of similarity we, we therefore sagging!” section.) It is vulgar, on the expenditure of half million pounds on the wedding? Attempt “magnanimous”. The beginnings it is humble of Briton, openee-
