this isn't really for me as such, but might be interesting anyway. someone wants to know good record shops in Amsterdam (addresses too if possible). plus other good places to buy things and go out i guess.

gareth, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well IL*s resident Amsterdammer Omar is the man to ask but Distortion records is a great favourite of mine (provided you're into vinyl). Most of the Dance Stores are on the imaginately named Nieuwe Nieuwstraat. I'll also put in a plug for the Book Exchange on the Kloveniersburgwal too as 1) its a fine, ramshakled bookstore 2) I used to work there 3) the aging, irritable, eccentric jazz-freak owner Barry is worth meeting (although he'll probably tell you to fuck off). A film has been made loosely based on him is due out soon staring Burt Reynolds 'The Hermit of Amsterdam'. Ask him about the time he visited with Paul Bowles, or just jazz in gen. He saw an early Velvet Underground gig apparently but thought they were shit.

stevo, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re record-stores, 'Concerto' and 'Get Records' - both in Utrechtsestraat. These have been recommended to me both by a native and by a close friend.

Jeff, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Few other tips: De Melkweg + Paridiso close to the Leidse Plein usually have something going on at night. The club scene I don't know at all. Most coffeeshops are dingy + seedy full of tiresome stoned alt-tourists + play the same old Bob Marley CD. Exceptions are 'The Global Chillage' on the Kerkstraat (?), and a place on the 'Rusland' street is predominantly local. There are a good couple of cheap Thai restaurants off the Nieuwmarkt. Waterlooplein has a big second-hand market each day, and don't buy anything off the so- called 'drug dealers' on the street as most are rip-off merchants. If you are ever over yourself Gareth send us a mail, I'll try to rope Omar in + we can have an IL* Amsterdam night out.

stevo, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna go! Not that it influences me one way or the other, but I hear there's really cute boys there.

Sean, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't there a Fat Beats (of Los Angeles fame) in Amsterdam? That would be the place to go if you have any interest in hip hop.

Tim, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, there is a fat beats, close to the central station. distortion is a nice little store, alternative, vinyl. fat beats is located at the singel, distortion at the westerstraat. most import/dance stores are on the nieuwedijk, some more around the corner in the nieuwe nieuwstraat. the coffeeshop in that street gives a good deal of strong dutch weed for 25 guilders. :) my personal tip: if you like dancehall, i recomment to check out the melkweg ('milky way') on a thursdaynight. good vibe and music (digi/'80/'90 dancehall, lots of nowadays hardcore ragga, some new gangsta hiphop and sometimes other reggae or crossover stuff)

we eat tulips for breakfast

Welkom xtal.

stevo, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd love to contribute something useful to this thread, but I can remember neither the name of the shop nor the name of the street on which I found a terrific vinyl'n'jazz-centric place on a recent (wonderful) trip to Amsterdam.

We were pretty close to our hotel on Pieter Cornelisz Hooftstraat, but walking towards the Rijksmuseum, so it could've been Hobbemakade. A dusty basement of LPs complete with turntables to try the merchandise before purchase. CDs and rock/pop upstairs.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here I am, sadly in a hurry, I'll try to get back later on. Get = excellent, Concerto = decent for 2nd hand stuff (and I have an inside man there who alerts me when good shit arrives). Boudisque close to Central Station is pretty good in the alternative/metal sector, used to be great for dance stuff, but their selection and prices are getting worse by the week. There are some specialist vinyl shops, across Paradiso there's a good one with loadsa jazz, pretty expensive though. 'Forever Changes' (Bilderdijkstraat) has a new friendly owner and has a very good selection of soundtracks and obscure stuff. Oh yeah and the cd-exchange C&D? by Elisabeth from Solex is a sort of cult-shop, still haven't paid a visit myself though.

oh yeah a excellent shop for film fans = Silver Screen on Haarlemmerdijk. Standard collection of D.Argento DVD's, lots of posters, etc.

Amsterdam get together sounds great if the little one permits.

Oh yeah Amsterdam girls are way way superior to the boys. ;)

Omar, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The shop across Paradiso (Weteringschans) = probably the same as the one Michael mentions. It's of course *Liesbeth* from Solex. Now, Stevo what's all this talk about Burt Reynolds playing Barry?!?

Omar, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Omar - As you've probably noticed Barry's shop tends to draw a wierd collection A'dam's more erudite freaks, whilst the man himself is a bit of a 'character'. At times working there it felt like being in some strange sit-com eg Barry gratuitously insulting stoned american backpackers looking for Alistair Crowley books, amidst various junkies trying to flog stolen books.

A regular customer Irish writer Michael O'Loughlin was inspired to write a film-script for a romantic comedy loosely based on Barry and the shop. Dutch director Rudolf van der Berg liked it, got funding, and they filmed it last winter with Julie Christie, Carmen Chaplin, and (to everyone's great hilarity) Burt Reynolds as 'Larry'. Of more concern to myself 'Larry' has an amusing, but corrupt, English assistant played by Johnathan Ryland. Its been titled 'The Hermit of Amsterdam' but when (or if) it ever comes out isn't clear. : The Hermit of Amsterdam

I went in 2002 and was in Amsterdam for around 5 days in the end. Loved it but was relying on a dated Lonely Planet booklet for eating tips and stuff. Saw good comedy at Boom Chicago but didn't try the pricey food. There's a huge amount of South American steakhouses, we went to Chicano's one night and it seemed good enough. There was a nice cafe for pastas I forget the name of, and another for this strudel but this is all a bit vague I know.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if you toke, but if you do, stay away from the big coffeeshops like the Bulldog. There's a great restaurant called Moeders but I'm not sure what street it is on. Take in a concert at the Melkweg. I used to get drunk at Korsikov (sp?) -- a fun bar with lots of different rooms.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the Paradiso good? I know it's for the bigger shows - will have to see what's on. I'm looking forward to visiting the stunning Tuschinskitheater again.

ha, i've just found out that apparently the person in charge of sorting it all out forgot to book hotel so we may be in similar boat. i'll keep you posted as i find out myself.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i stayed here before - awful site design but the 3 star hotel itself was fine and lots of the rooms are custom designed by artists for that extra novelty.

Things to do, places to drink/eat mainly in the evenings.

I just got back! Best damn city ever. Here's a quick rundown if you're still interested.

Record Stores: Concerto or Get Records (same owners) on Utrechtstraat (b/w Keizergracht & Prinsengracht) are the only ones I shoppped at more than once. I don't have a record player right now, though, but Fat Beats looked like it would be good for that.
Restaurants: The Bolhoed on Prinsengracht b/w Leliegracht & Prinsenstraat or Cinema Paradiso on Westerstraat
Bars: There are pubs & cafes on every corner, but we frequented Cafe Tabac AKA The Cushion Bar on the corner of Brouwersgracht & Prinsengracht.
Clubs: Melkveg and Paradiso are pretty cool on some nights, but I had more fun at Bitterzoet. I never went to Eleven (on the 11th floor of the old post office near Central Station) at night, but it's supposed to be great. You can see the entire city from there.
Museum: I only made it to the Van Gogh-- the audio tour is rowdy. they have different actors playing vincent, theo, etc. haha
Markets: Every Saturday and Monday there is a market on Noorderkerkstraat-Lindengracht-Westerstraat that's nice. I found near-mint copies of Country Life, Sail Away, Paul Simon, etc. for 2 euros. The biggest outdoor market in Europe (Albertcuyp) goes on every day but sunday in De Pijp, but its mainly grizzled gypsies selling irregular Keds and deodorant.

Check out Vondel park, too. On Friday nights they have outdoor screenings. Just make sure they're showing an English language movie, though, or you'll end up sitting through All About My Mother or something.

Most coffeeshops are dingy + seedy full of tiresome stoned alt-tourists + play the same old Bob Marley CD.

That's true, but mainly the coffeeshops in the center circle. Barney's on Haarlemerdijk is great for their weed and atmosphere, but my favorite is Paradox (on one of those streests b/w Rosengracht and Bloemgracht) because of the bomb veggie food and dying old men reading the paper.

this thread is making me even more excited. i'm coming to amsterdam on wednesday for the black mountain/dead meadow gig at the paradiso, anyone here going to that? i'm on the cheapo bus and i got 24 hours in the city, 8am-8am. i'm planning to spend the day wandering (only been to amsterdam once before but it was winter then too and i remember it being utterly gorgeous and full of canals and bikes), but any tips on how to do amsterdam on a really tiny budget would be welcomed. also i was assuming the gig would end at a civilised hour like 1am or something, but from the paradiso's website it seems to finish at 10.30/11. kate mentioned the paradiso being open late late late for dancing, is it? i need to use the time between the end of the show and my bus leaving, and dancing sounds like a lot more fun than sitting in a caff for 7 hours. that also sounds fun in its own way but, you know, perhaps i can do both.

emsk ( emsk), Sunday, 27 November 2005 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Search: cafes I liked:

Coffeeshop 36
The Green House

also - there's this little Museum of Hemp which doesn't sell weed but has a wicked chilling out area upstairs.

also - look out for a pub called De Wildermann (I think that's it). Thousands of quality lagers, although might be a little quiet for some.

Destroy:
The Bulldog

thanks dl! and congrats on yr job yay! quiet pub sounds great, is it open all night d'you know? one of the side-benefits of going to amsterdam is i get to READ for ages bc of going on the bus (hard to read when you're on a bike, the pages keep flipping over) so falling into a quiet pub at 4am sounds aaaaaahhhhhhh...

emsk ( emsk), Sunday, 27 November 2005 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

I know it's open till late. There's another similar pub quite nearby (I'm sorry my sense of direction was fucked when I was there) and they've both got something like 2000 different beers to choose from. In one of the pubs, it was like an old fashioned school with tabels and chairs laid out in a row, a blackboard with all the different drinks and a single waiter who has pictures of himself building a tower of dominoes on the wall. Great, but quaint, but cool.

Yay on DL's good advice. All I'll add right now is that I loved the couple of days I spent there in July, and that rarely has any city felt so immediately right, in the sense that after just a few minutes there I almost felt like I was at home, it was that comfortable and easy to get around.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 November 2005 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

OTM!

Plus - hire a bike! They're mental one-speed fuckers with back-pedal brakes and they're really heavy and can't really stop very easily but they're loads of fun for scooting about on.

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 27 November 2005 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

i nearly posted before then realised i knew next to nothing and other people could be way more helpful, but since no one else has anything to offer - the only time i've gone to amsterdam and stayed in a place, we got there and wandered around the hostels until we found the cheapest one and then we booked ourselves in. i have no idea what it was called but there are hundreds of them. we got a bunkbed in a room with i think 4 other people, a locker each in the room to keep your valuables in, and it cost about £10 a night. i think. it was clean, safe and friendly. this was about 7 or 8 years ago.

but if i can be more specific - i'd really really like to stay away from the main drinking/eating areas. I'm not in the mood right now, particularly with a load of salesmen etc floating around. Place to sit with a book, catch some music, see some interesting stuff. I've been a couple of times before so have *some• sense of the place.

So yeah, any suggestions for good places outside the main flow of people would be great.

Krua Thai - excellent thai restaurant in the centre
Incanto - v good italian overlooking the flower market and munttoren
The Seapalace - yes, i know it's obvious, and it's hard to miss a gigantic floating chinese restaurant just outside Centraal, but it's fun and the food's pretty good. expensive though obv.
Bakkerij van Vessem - just a lovely bakery with some of the best butter croissants i've had outside france. not one to go out of your way for, but if you're in the area, sitting on the bench outside with a croissant and a coffee is deligthful

We were in Utrecht two days ago and did both, obv. And the railway museum cos I am a Child

Absolutely incredible city (Utrecht), the architecture is all so utterly delightful to wander around

Last day in Amsterdam (whose west side is wonderful, will reserve spoken judgement on the centre) today and we might have to choose between Het Schip and De Dageraad. Couldn't possibly do both...could we...

Doing my homework before my last trip to Utrecht I was surprised to find two more examples of houses built buy Rietveld within easy walking distance of the Rietveld-Schroeder house (Waldeck Pyrmontkade 20, Erasmusllaan 5).

We're off to Tilburg next week, primarily for a concert but I'm looking forward to having a nose around there; if anyone has any hot Tilburg tips I'm all ears. Nose, ears.

Tim, Thursday, 6 March 2025 14:52 (seven months ago)

We even made it in time for the English language guided tour, which enhanced our experience considerably. What a place! Our guide kept speaking of the 'humour and fantasy' incorporated into what's essentially a local authority building and inwardly I was comparing it to what's happening in London and grimacing

imago, Thursday, 6 March 2025 17:08 (seven months ago)

We made it to the Van Ravesteyn house down the road from the Rietveld Schroderhuis but alas neither of the other two (unless by accident) - all the architecture in the entire city was so consistently brilliant though, it's a place that clearly has astronomical planning standards

imago, Thursday, 6 March 2025 17:10 (seven months ago)

On the way to Het Schip we walked past the Tuinpark community garden that comprises the western half of Westerpark, which looks like a staggering bit of urban planning too. Sadly didn't have time to explore it, but on a sunny day it had quite a utopian air to it. Someone in there was blasting some ecstatic version of Son Of A Preacher Man very loudly

nothing off the top of my head. there is a left luggage at amsterdam centraal yes - far right as you go in the front. confusing you need a ticket to get through the barriers to the LL! (it confused me anyway)

Weirdly, the left luggage we used was on the far left of the station as you approach it...

and fwiw we stayed at B&B Eelhouse, which was both inexpensive and delightful, one of our best ever holiday accommodation choices. do not book if you hate stairs however

Thinking of booking in Haarlem but the combination of my own indecisiveness and the expense is making it difficult to decide. Aaargh!

it's not cheap but Grand Hotel Amrath in a former shipping company office is an interesting place to stay and practically across the street from the station.

We stayed in the Motel One near Waterlooplein once or twice and it's fine, a fairly anonymous bit of town but handy for Cafe De Druid and Cafe Scharrebier too. I'd guess it was an easy 10 minute walk from the station.

At a similar price point but further out, we stayed at Hotel Muse which we found small but nice. It's a tram ride from the station, nicely placed to see the Amsterdam School buildings on Roelof Hartplein and nearby.

Cosign the Grand Hotel Amrâth, I did a little guided tour of the building once, fascinating Art Nouveau interiors.
