I knew their work by default of growing up in the post-Eames design empire of America, where their influence is astounding, but I really didn't know them by name or more of what they did until very recently. I also think that film they did about the powers of ten -- focusing out to the entire universe and then in down to the molecular level -- was one of the best science films ever made! First saw that at Terrastock II of all places...

only thing i know about them is that even though their house was enormously large and tall, everything they'd hung on the walls was at or slightly above eye-level when u r seated on one of their magnificent chairs. they wanted you to be able to check things out at your leisure, which seems very considerate. once i get a single thing to put up on the wall of my new apartment i will adopt the same principle.

Ned - the other crucial movers of that movie were Philip and Phylis Morrison, friends of Escher and geniuses of Science for the Masses; better than Sagan. "The Ring of Truth" = best science miniseries I've ever seen.

Some bk company brought out a wonderful little flipbook of 'Powers of Ten' a couple of years ago. It makes a great Christmas present! They used to show that film A LOT on 'Blue Peter' (famously 'educational' UK kids TV show) when I was growing up - childhood psychedelia, ya can't beat it!

Did Charles (?) Eames also do packaging design for airlines, coca-cola, lucky strike - or is that somebody else? And I presume the bros created the Eames chair...

bros = husband and wife (doesn't help that her name is "ray")

for years I tht they were a gay married couple (yeah, right, mark: lots of those in the 40s and50s!! i guess i kind of tht their designwork was SO SUCCESSFUL and POPULAR that they "got away" with it)

we bought the video and flipbook yesterday and they have all sorts of tchtokes. i love there social utopiaism that seems to be connected to a long traditon of american design. and mark for the longest time i thought they were a queer couple as well.

I think the famous coke bottle guy was named Raymond Lowey (Lowery?) or something like that.

nine years pass...

Mentioned early in the thread, so fantastically elegant

one year passes...

Saw the documentary tonight (knew virtually nothing about them beforehand):

Weird serendipity: their Bicentennial show, "The World of Franklin and Jefferson," gets panned in the Times, and supposedly Charles Eames never really gets over that. You see the review ("What Is This Stuff Doing at the Met?") on screen, with Hilton Kramer's byline.
