RFI: Ship in Alien?

Does anybody know what the ship is that the humans go into because of the distress/help signal, is it a predator ship or an organic transport for the eggs/aliens?

mei (mei), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

IT COULDN'T BE A PREDATOR SHIP COS IT'S BEFORE THAT MOVIE AND THAT IS HISTORY PAL, YOU CAN'T JUST CHANGE HISTORY

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It is apparently an alien ship of another alien design, as they find the body of a dead alien creature who is not human, not Alien (with a capital A) and does not look like a Predator - and consider Predator was made ten years later is unlikely to share any kind of design.

So neither of your suggestions I guess.

(This is all made more explicit in the Allan Dean Foster novelization).

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I always assumed the eggs were laid after the ship arrived on the planet.

The ship being 'contaminated' much as the Nostromo would be (and later the colonists' buildings in Aliens would be).

That still leaves lots of unanswered questions about where the aliens came from originally of course.

PREDATOR WAS MADE IN 1987, WHILST ALIEN WAS MADE IN 1979. HOW ON EARTH COULD IT POSSIBLY BE A PREDATOR SHIP BECAUSE THEY HADN'T MADE THAT MOVIE YET. REVISIONIST!

Maybe Ridley Scott had access to a time machine?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

SO YOU ARE SUGGESTING RIDLY SCOTT WENT INTO THE FUTURE, SAW PREDATOR, THEN TRAVELED BACK IN TIME TO MAKE ALIEN AND INSERTED A PREDATOR SHIP BEFORE PREDATORS WHERE EVEN DREAMED UP?

The difference between this thread and the original is sorta like that between Shakespeare's Hamlet and those lamer plays he transmogrified.

BUT - Alien is set in the future, while Predator is set in the present day. I think that makes it quite possible that it could be a Predator ship, even if other factors suggest otherwise.

http://www.planetavp.com/al/Alien/BehindtheTerror/index.htm

some production art here, with a few more details.

the fun bit is that in the original screenplay, they were supposed to see a pyramid-like structure in the distance from the ship, and investigate it. the "hieroglyphic lifecycle of the Alien" stuff comes from that.

Kingfish of Burma (Kingfish), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

also, for extra fun, go find the production art that Ron Cobb did, as he was the _other_ designer on the flick.

I always assumed the eggs were laid after the ship arrived on the planet.
The ship being 'contaminated' much as the Nostromo would be (and later the colonists' buildings in Aliens would be).

I usually think this too, but then I wonder about the laser mist that hovers over the eggs...

I think the only thing we can be sure of is that Giger was an evil freak genius.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 July 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

there's no reason why two different species (the predators and the alien ship from the first movie) couldn't be harvesting the aliens eggs. i've never understood the confusion.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 1 July 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought the here-to-for-unidentified ship found in Alien was transporting the ALIEN eggs. That's why the protective laser mist thing ya know to keeps those little suckers secure.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 1 July 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

what laser mist?

Pshaw! It is neither "a predator ship" nor "an organic transport for the eggs/aliens", it is, quite clearly, the motorised skateboard contraption out of "Dumb and Dumber".

-- Alex in SF (clobberthesauru...), July 1st, 2004.

that's exactly right. and the debate as to whether it's a predator ship or not is just absurd (though admittedly hilarious). it has nothing to do with predators, obviously. but now that the mythology has been expanded because of the upcoming alien vs predator movie, there's no reason why two species (the predators and the creatures like the dead pilot from the first Alien movie) couldn't be harvesting the alien eggs.

ANYWAY...it's hilarious that i have now become part of the thing i was making fun of in the original thread.

good night, see y'all in two weeks!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 2 July 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

> but now that the mythology has been expanded because of the upcoming alien vs predator movie

but there's a precedent for the alien / predator crossover - the alien skull as a trophy in the ship in predator 2.

also, couldn't the whole predator thing be inspired by the ship in the alien movie (meaning it WAS a predator ship in alien)? [tries to think of other examples where this has happened, where people have taken throwaway bits of other films and given them life. maybe Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. and Neil Gaiman's run on Miracleman seemed to be picking up the scraps from Alan Moore's table.]

koogs (koogs), Friday, 2 July 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Comics are great for that, the whole shared persistent universe thing means there's always characters that people remember but no-one's using.

Comics are also the cause of this: Dark Horse got the license for the adaptations/extensions of Aliens and Predator, and convinced those responsible to let them release a comic called Alien Vs. Predator in the period between Predator and Predator 2.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 July 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the way this thread has changed from

"hahaha those fanboys are so funny"

to

"actually, was it a a Predator ship?"

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 2 July 2004 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

> Dark Horse got the license for the adaptations/extensions of Aliens and Predator

i can't remember whether i've read this (and didn't realise it predated the second film). there was another one (probably 2 or 3 now) with batman vs one or the other two, wasn't there?

koogs (koogs), Friday, 2 July 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Predator, I imagine (it's a better fit). There was also some Supergroup vs Aliens miniseries where the Aliens straight-up killed half the heroes (who may have been heavier than usual on second-stringers).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

when is Predator vs Archie coming out?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i have that bottom one.

all they need now is to crossover the batman vs dredd with the batman vs predator / alien 8)
