The genius behind Desperate Dan, Oor Wullie, Lord Snooty and the Broons. Much underrated and way better than say, Charles Schulz. Or do you know better?

He's great, but surely Leo Baxendale is better?

"Nancy" isn't on that list. So there is better.

Benjamin, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Baxendale MILES better - Ken Reid (Britain's Basil Wolverton) and Davey Law (original Dennis the Menace artist) also better. Watkins v. v. religious man - sort've reflected in the conservative millieu of his strips, and his (to my taste) rather starchy/staid drawing style.

Schulz is way out of Watkins' league.

You people are insane, but I will let you live. FOR NOW.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The conversation only begins when you mention Bill Watterson.

So, NO, Dudley D Watkins was not the best strip cartoonist.

JM, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The conversation is meaningless until the name of George "Krazy Kat" Herriman is brought up.

Justyn Dillingham, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you, Justyn. Also Mr. McCay of Little Nemo in Slumberland fame.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Watterson for President!

Yes yes you can have yr Herrimans and yr McCays and yr Wattersons (if you insist), but they are the 'A Love Supreme', 'What's Going On' and 'Loveless' of comic strips - the same old same old CLASSICS and not necessarily the top, the best, or the ONLY good strips ever. Segar's 'Thimble Theater/Popeye' is at least as 'good' as 'Krazy Kat' (its certainly a great deal FUNNIER), and I think 'Calvin and Hobbes' owes quite a lot to 'Barnaby' by Crockett Johnson.

Corks, how could I forget Baxendale, the Lennon to Watkins McCartney, (yeah I know that's a dreadful analogy).

Watkins came to mind coz' I was reading Lord Snooty's Christmas at Bunkerton castle to my lad last night from the first 50 years of the Beano and felt nostalgic. In truth it's the stuff he did for the Sunday Post I love, because it was so much a part of my childhood and parts of it were my childhood.

Peanuts was about of course but I had no emotional connection with the characters.

Cushlamochree! Crockett Johnson beats all-comers. http://www.ksu.edu/english/nelp/purple/books/cartoons.html

*befuddled* I honestly don't know how to react to that, so I won't.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Benjamin.
