It's the Final Countdown

Looking at it, I really hope I never want to return. I don't care if this is a pointless, needless thread, the flimflam about the break being a good idea is totally hubristic: there will be fewer posters at the other end but the board will never regain its exclusivity short of imposing very strict rules about who can post -- and then the thing will wither and die. Perhaps for the best.

Europe (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:53 (twenty years ago)

who's dropping the ball?

just nod politely ken

oops (Oops), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Fewer posters at the other end? You mean the faithful? Jeez, what's wrong with that? Cheers to the faithful I say!

The Final Countdown is such a crappy song I'm glad I can't remember how it goes.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago)

Basically a lot of senior ILX0rs think the break will 'clear the air' and the closer-knit ILX of 2001-2 will return if [see the mods board] new rules are imposed ie about retrospective post deletion.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago)

*nods politely*

ken c (ken c), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:59 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, this fatalistic attitude makes me feel cheery by comparison!

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:59 (twenty years ago)

g'night all. got to work in 6 hrs. If I see you again I do. If I don't, was nice knowin' ya!

don't take the i'net too seriously. it's nothing but a bunch of bits and pixels.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 2 July 2004 08:59 (twenty years ago)

Yup, solipsism if the new black, ain't it?

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Life is elsewhere.

Europe (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:00 (twenty years ago)

When you find it, let me know!

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:05 (twenty years ago)

See you on the flip side....dunno about you lot but I'll be back.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago)

I can't figure out why a bunch of posters from 01/02 would return just because it all happens to go down for two weeks in '04. Obviously they've figured out better things to do with their lives, and probably wouldn't even know about the outage.

Retrospective post deletion? Jeez. That sounds like Andrew is an Orwellian tyrant. I have a hard time believing that. People who live their lives hoping 01/02 will magically come back don't get much sympathy from me. They were good years for me even though I wasn't here, but I don't expect them to return.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Nah it wasn't Andrew but Alan.

Europe (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't think that anyone thinks that specific *posters* will return. Some of us are just hoping that the general "attitude" returns. I guess...

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll definitely be back. I promised not to post any more links but I'm sure if you read any other "new answers" threads tonight you know where to find me. ;0)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

sorry ILx, I couldn't help it. I'll see most of you again but just in case I don't. . .like I said I couldn't help it. :)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

You're right, Uncle Miltie. This is a "pointless, needless thread". Online gathering communities don't have halcyon periods; things develop and change but they do so for the betterment of the community as a whole and the only people who don't stand to benefit from the evolution of the community are those who are too narrow-minded to really give the newer changes any sort of shot.

And yes, I'm speaking from a wholly personal POV. Fuck, I "only" came onto the scene fifteen months ago. I'm sorry I wasn't open-minded in the late '90s so I could've had the chance to move into this community when it was first started, but damn, what counts is that I DID make it, and the same goes for everyone else who came onto the scene from January 2003 onward.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:20 (twenty years ago)

The attitude of 2001-2002 is gone forever. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is entirely subjective, but given the sheer size of the place now, and the amount of shitstorms that posters have gone through, there is no way it's ever going to come back.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:20 (twenty years ago)

What was this ruddy 'attitude'? ay?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:21 (twenty years ago)

I dig you Dee, we've been here about the same time, so I'm with you.

I love you ILX.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:23 (twenty years ago)

This board is like punk.

You have the "I was at the Roxy" old 'guard'. They went to FAPs before ILX existed.

You have the 'new wavers' and the bandwagon jumpers.

And you have the people who just enjoy the sounds.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:23 (twenty years ago)

And I am These Animal Men.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Wah! Wait, slow down, I've been lecturing the young Delays people on the merits of Laser Guided Melodies and early Spiritualized, what have I missed?

I don't think the attitude is gone irrevocably. It had more to do with general respect and tolerence than with the size. But then again, it had its own problems. The smallness and inbredness of it resulted in some awful firestorms as incestuous ILX couples broke up rather spectacularly in public, and I am ashamed and saddened to admit that I was part of that, yes.

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:29 (twenty years ago)

I really should be going, but it's only half an hour 'til The End, and I want to witness it. I'll be disappointed, though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah me too tuomas.

i mean i'm only going to work at a bar in a few hours. that's like the last place you have to be coherent for. . .

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm staying here till I get the POXY FULE message!!!

(Or until Aaron gets back online, take yer pick.)

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Hehe I feel like we're on the Titanic or something. Think I will just turn off my computer now rather than get sucked into a waiting game...

Archel (Archel), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Dude, this is indeed a stupid thread - thx, but we were fine without the resentful summarizing "analysis" Milton, for why you weren't there then etc. However, Dee - and maybe I'm simply speaking here as the polar opposite of you (ie "this message board/cyber community did NOT change/heal/save my life") - but I think it's kind of beyond naive to say that things develop and change but they do so for the betterment of the community as a whole - this makes me want to make you watch that little movie version of Candide we had to endure in french class in 11th grade or something.

Vic (Vic), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:37 (twenty years ago)

Dammit, now I've got Dido's "I will go down with this ship..." stuck in my head, arrrggghhh ::stabs self::

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:37 (twenty years ago)

last night i saved a few threads off ilm (i've been listening to a lot of jazz recently and wanted to have some recommendations to hand), and it was pretty sad when i bumped into threads from 01/02.

that said, i think i'd happily swap ilx online in 01/02 for london ilx irl in 04.

i don't think this is true, though.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:38 (twenty years ago)

'resentful'? ya reckon? nice use of sarky qtmarks though -- very sophisticated. reminds me of reading diderot as a nipper...

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:38 (twenty years ago)

Er, it's an hour and a half until the end, according to other Andrew.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh, crikey, stupid summer daylight savings time.

My New Identity (kate), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:41 (twenty years ago)

Enrique i've never had any beef with you and could only take a wild guess at your resentments (and i still think this thread was dumb) - but i think you should know something now I'M GOING TO BE THE MOTHER OF YOUR CHILD.

Vic (Vic), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:42 (twenty years ago)

But that can't be true BECAUSE I'M GAY.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Er, it's an hour and a half until the end, according to other Andrew.

Blimey! I won't get to witness the end after all... Okay, this is my last post to pre-break ILX then. Bye bye folks! For those of you who'll come there, see ya at Two Weeks!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:50 (twenty years ago)
