NEW YORK - Paula Danziger, author of numerous popular books for children and young adults, has died of complications from a heart attack in New York City.

Danziger’s first novel, The Cat Ate My Gymsuit, was published to glowing notices 30 years ago.

She also wrote the Amber Brown books about a pugnacious grade schooler.

Danziger grew up in New Jersey and became a schoolteacher in 1967. She says she always wanted to write, but didn’t start until a week in which she survived two car accidents in two days.

“Before I got hit by a bus,” she said.

I remember her best for her work on Live and Kicking in the early 90s, rather than her literature, but... yeah, she was a lot better than Jacqueline fucking Wilson. Godspeed Paula.

That's too bad. She was like Judy Bloom without the not-so-hidden dirty side.

Weird. I probably read a lot of her books as a pre-teen boy who felt that there weren't any books geared towards pre-teen boys so instead read books geared towards pre-teen girls, and some Kurt Vonnegut and Stephen King.

Damn. I worshipped her as a kid even though she was a filthy Yank. Mind, she went off a bit in the 90s. Hail and farewell, PD.

I read The Cat Ate My Gymsuit, and I think There´s A Bat in Bunk Five. I don´t remember them at all except for the titles.

:(. I wrote her a letter when I was in middle school, and she wrote back!

I bought "Can You Sue Your Parents for Malpractice" at a library sale last month. She thanks all her former students including Ian "Steve Sanders" Ziering !!
