Henry and June

An erotic drama made in 1990 with Uma Thurman, Richard E. Grant, some French lady and some American guy (directed by seeming porn dungeon owner Philip Kaufman; cf. Quills). I was only half-watching it last night but someone on Amazon made a comment that it was really badly acted and I think that's probably correct. Another customer and in fact a fair few people it seems love the cinematography, and I suppose if you were in the mood for the necessary evocations you would go for that. So have any of you angels seen it?

I know FW's face - was he in a Coen Brothers film maybe? (SO MUCH fucking thrusting, btw)

I remember this being on late night Showtime a long time ago. Like when I was a teen. I remember it was boring.

I wish Anais Nin's husband didn't keep calling her "pussywillow."

Joe Queenan has a really funny chapter in one of his movie essay books about how Fred Ward's bald cap completely ruins their love scene.

it keeps sliding down his back

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite scene is when Henry Miller has to stand perfectly still while the giant sandworm rumbles underneath the ground.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 16 July 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

that's henry and "dune"

she is strange-looking. i saw a really awful, but admirably ambitious, film that she wrote and directed. she has been in a lot of good films.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It is one of the most unbelievably BORING films I have ever seen. It is like watching clothes dry on a radiator.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i tried that once and burned a hole in my sweater!

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

MORE INTERESTING THAN "HENRY & JUNE"!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 16 July 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Watched it properly tonight. Pashmina = understating. Has there ever been a film with more campy visual metaphors accompanying sex scenes? (Also, early 30s erotic cinema: C/D?)

I saw it when it came out, ugh, wildly unappealing.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, sadly it is more historically impt for the NC-17 than for the film itself. I dunno, I thought it was okay. I liked the scene where Miller seemed to finish a book in one day. Richard E. Grant is so camp that it's almost okay. (Certainly a turn from Bruce Robinson's films.)

Kaufman seems to be really odd about what he makes. I think that he often chooses almost-interesting stories, and that's the problem. He can't decide if he wants to be all intellectual or lez it all up with Hollywoodisms. There's nothing wrong with combining the two, but he seems like a mule stuck between two bales of hay starving to death.

So.

Richard E. Grant is so camp that it's almost okay.

His American accent! And his passionate musicianship (which he always displays when his wife's being fucked or groped by somebody)!

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I forget if Grant actually says "Oh, I am fucking you, pussywillow" but he might as well have.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

except it would be spelled "O" as in

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was about the Nickelodeon TV show KABLAM!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 19 July 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)
