what do folks think of the portuguese winger ronaldo?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well at least he's got rid of that stupid spaghetti haircut he had. Although i don't think that was what you were looking for was it Kilian?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(winger = footballer who plays attacking role and usually concentrates his/her efforts along the touchline)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Good player. Cried like a bitch in the final.

Masked Gazza, Monday, 19 July 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

he had a good tournament and had his confidence already bolstered by an excellent final six months of Premiership (inc Cup Final goal). One to watch further this season.

still funny to see him crying after the final tho. don't mind the FD, do mind the 'earrings'.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Football. I wouldn't know anything about that.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The FD doesn't always work for him but the times when it does (see FA CUp final) well frankly it would take the most rockist of football fans to not forgive him.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

After so much empty useless showboating at the beginning of the season I was kind of looking forward to him becoming one of my favourite Premiership objects of derision - then he learnt to pass and cross properly and even score the occasional goal. I have a begrudging respect for him now that is almost... ALMOST undimmed after Euro 2004.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoy it when he tries to do something flash (see the showboat on Soccer AM) & falls over. Oh how we laugh!
oops x-post

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

has he learnt to cross properly? i have my doubts as to whether he can deliver consistently good crosses. incisive runs and passes - yes.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Never midn the fancy stuff, it was the fact that he worked so hard, especially in the final, that impressed me. If only Joe Cole could do that.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it's his heading ability that impressed me, he scored a couple of cracking headers in the Euros

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hate Man U, wanted Greece to win, but their is no denying that he is an exciting player to watch. He stepped up when Figo was out of sorts (pretty much all tournament). Wrather he has the teeth to match his finesse is another matter, still, watch those feet. All that said, I would still take Rooney of the two, any day of the week and twice on sunday.

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronaldo for Portugal was like Beckham for England a few years ago, popping up all over the pitch, more or less carrying some of the games on his own - there was a kind of "fuck this for a laugh, if you lot want to be a load of underachieving losers than fine, I'll win this on my own".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This is my first post since Ilx returned so I may as well stick my neck out.

I think Ronaldo will develop into one of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen. The combination of skill, strength, intelligence, and a wonderful attitude to the game he's got mean that only serious injuries (quite likely, unfortunately, he does get kicked a lot) will stop this happening.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been impressed enough with his improvement that I think he could become a terrific player. He's judging the fanny dangle quotient better these days, but his passing and crossing is still nowhere near good enough. Maybe he will learn.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I had my doubts (mostly hopeful) when United first signed him. He seems to be a good buy. He is very skillful, has a lot more to his game than his stepover, and has the potential to be great. he is very exciting to watch, and a lot better value than Reyes to date.

I await to see him against Danny Mills in next season's derby. I expect Mills will try to keep him out of the game, in the traditional sense.

ahah, great gifs and picture !
I might be alone here but I really like him (as a football player, off the pitcht I don't know/care). he's brilliant technically, inventive, fast, exciting to watch and even his very annoying behaviour is fun (I much prefer that to more humble great players like kaka, for instance).
The fact that everybody hates him, which I can understand, almost make me like him more !
If ManU wins the PL and CL this year will he get another Ballon d'Or and beat Messi to it ?

AleXTC, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

He was actually very nice and personable when we came across the Man U coach at some M62 service station one time and had his picture took with the kids.

No. Ronaldo's not been on form *that* good most of the year, although he's really starting to take off again. The only way Messi doesn't win this is if he blows out his knee and can't play the first half of next season.

Call out (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

But I don't think Messi can win it if he doesn't win the CL (if he does, of course, it's not contest).
And if CR wins the PL, the CL and is also best scorer of the PL, I don't see who else could get it....

AleXTC, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 11:22 (sixteen years ago)

Either way they were both essential in getting their teams to the final/winning the league and both scored a bunch, I don't see why that changes anything. Helps that Messi is world footballs darling, scoring wonder goals every game (as opposed to cronaldo doing it one in every 4) and not a whiny bitch.

Call out (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

(in the past ten years, ronaldo, figo (both for real), kaka and ronaldo have won it the year they won the champions league. cannavaro won it for the euros. it helps but it's not essential.)

Call out (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

(wow i need to stop procrastinating on wikipedia.)

Call out (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but since it's a non WC/Euro year, it's the CL that matters the most for the ballon d'or.
moreover since ManU and Barca will be champions of their respective championships (although it's not done for ManU), it's the CL that will be decisive.
but clearly EVERYBODY would prefer Messi to win it (and Barca to win the CL)... except me !

AleXTC, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

NV- I remember that pic!

I think United without Ronaldo are a much poorer team than Barca without Messi.

Ronaldo is more complete than Messi, but Messi's better to watch, because I find it hard to really get excited about someone just being faster and stronger than defenders.

Yes, if only Ronaldo could add some variety to his game, maybe try doing one of those fancy 'stepovers' or something, instead of just running quickly.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 12:22 (sixteen years ago)

Number None, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not arguing for a second that ronaldo is in any way less effective than messi, or that messi can compete physically. just prefer messi. i can't remember the last time ronaldo went round three players on a run.

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

Old Big 'OOS (AKA the Cupwinner) (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

What Messi does waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than weasel face = pass the ball. Messi's passing is v v v good (though not as visionary as Iniesta). And if I had to have a player save my life in a 1 on 1 with a keeper, I'd pick Messi.

Messi has the wow factor more than Ronaldo for sure. That close ball control/balance thing is the quintessential skill of great footballers. Ronaldo seems like a newer breed, not that he's not skillful on the ball, of course he is, but he's a v Prem League style player, v direct.

In the last year or so I've seen more people in Ronaldo shirts than ever before, the Al Nassr one. Can spot the blue and yellow a mile off as well

Messi definitely second but still a strong streetview showing

Vini Jr, Schweinsteiger, Dzeko, Neymar, Bellingham, Modric, Mbappe with occasional street sightings

Players being bigger than clubs now, how many does this actually apply to? I've never seen anyone in a Kane or Fernandes shirt

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Friday, 1 September 2023 08:59 (two years ago)

Is Schweinsteiger still playing? Seems like the odd one out.

Also are you implying that Bruno Fernandes is bigger than MAN UTD cos lol he’s not even the most famous player on the team also they are MAN UTD

sell cigs to kids (a hoy hoy), Friday, 1 September 2023 10:06 (two years ago)

I can only report on what I've seen! I saw a Schweinsteiger national team shirt the other day. People must wear shirts of retired players too.

I could have picked any Manchester United player, or really most players. I'm definitely not implying Bruno or Kane are bigger than the club, it would appear precisely the opposite. Feels like the variety of shirts is fairly concentrated amongst a handful of players. I've also excluded actual football crowds here, this is purely everyday street sightings

Tow Law City (cherry blossom), Friday, 1 September 2023 10:19 (two years ago)

maybe some of the Ronaldo shirts are just worn by fans of REDACTED in general

"Not long ago I had an instructive conversation with a football-mad 10-year-old from Belfast. We were walking by a beautiful lake in Donegal. I’d seen him proudly wearing a Liverpool kit on the dancefloor at our Liverpool-mad friend’s wedding the previous day, so I asked him about the ongoing English league season. As everyone knows, football is “a common language”, particularly for people from different generations or cultural backgrounds who might otherwise struggle to know what to talk about together.

I asked him to name his favourite player (Mohamed Salah) and whether he thought Arsenal would be champions (he was certain they wouldn’t). He asked had I seen Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest goals? I confessed I had not. Ronaldo is smashing all the league records, he said, quoting the latest figures. Yeah, but it’s only the Saudi league, I interrupted. It’s not a proper league, is it? Who cares?

He hesitated and offered a look of sincere puzzlement. Politely but firmly he resumed his recitation of the Al Nassr captain’s many accomplishments in the Saudi Pro League over recent months. I felt he was doing his best to explain the future of football to someone he could see was still attached to a hierarchy that was obviously crumbling."

Fans with attachments to domestic leagues in countries such as Brazil, Argentina, the Netherlands, Belgium or Scotland have seen this sort of thing before. Accelerating in the early 1990s, the successful commercialisation and marketisation to global TV audiences of a small number of powerful leagues led to an increased concentration of talent in England, Spain and Italy, directly at the expense of “smaller” leagues, which were turned into relative backwaters.

Tell me about it.
