he's always seemed earnest but self-deprecating to me - not oblivious to the criticism, accepting it and getting on with the job in a reasonable (if not particularly inspiring) manner. he defended his performance (and, somewhat honourably, that of Amanda De Cadanet who was taking much stick at the time (early 90s) ala Kelly Brook during her days on The Big Breakfast - tho Brook actually seemed better yet more hard done by) on The Word wrt to how they had to work without script in unpredictable environment (doubtless coke-addled production staff or what may have been just job ineptitude in floor managing, vision mixing etc.), but that's Channel 4 live TV baby. I sort of miss it. Things seemed to improve a lot in that respect when Chris Evans turned up tho who did seem better suited to live presentation with his bright ideas and more obvious passion for the medium (putting him above Christian but of course it's a slightly different kettle of annoying fish)...with the cold-calculated slickness of Big Brother live (please please do not swear - three strikes and we're out sez Mr ITC) the culmination.
