we become what we despise

i have just used the word "songcraft" in a press release.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahhahahaha omg that is so true.

I read all night about toxic pesticides and their harmful effects on the populations of developing nations, then I go into work and basically re-write press releases for the companies that manufacture, market and sell those pesticides. Fuck.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm applying to law school.

Nick Apollo Forte (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

pestcraft

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

hey JBR, what's with the new handle, btw? I mean, I know a Nick Forte.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seriously considering going back to school to become a maths professor. Just like my grandparents.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no animals were harmed in the making of my lunch today.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You hated your grandparents?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.catalog-of-cool.com/forte.html

Nick Apollo Forte (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't hate my grandparents, no. They were pretty cool.

But I *DO* utterly hate academia.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i might as well go whole hog and use "incendiary." why not.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

real academia > liberal arts

I CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ZONE (ex machina), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

May we ask which bunch of incendiary songcrafters you are writing about?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate - you could also be an independent tutor or something. Teaching doesn't always have to take place in academia.

JBR - oh, so there's another Nick Forte who wasn't in Rorshach. Cool.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

independent tutor also allows you to chat up your students without shame. (vs say if you were a uni lecturer or school teacher)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

several bunches. i need to chain-smoke and pace now.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

about a month ago i used, in the presence of some other ilX0rs, the phrase "store-bought sophistication." i felt like throwing up.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i might use the phrase "jagged romanticism."

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the question is now do you despise what you were?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

erruughh! i never used to despise my past.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Believer - In the Penthouse of the Ivory Tower: Three Days in San Diego with Charlie (the bad subject) and Nine Thousand Other Anxious Academics at the 119th Annual Modern Language Association Convention.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

To jump on JBR's and Ma$onic's caravan -- I've been considering taking small-business classes.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM AN ART STUDENT WHO WORKS IN A LAW FIRM OMG WTF!??!?!?!

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"You're either going to be talking in a hermetic way about things that are only of interest to others who carry your specialized interest—and there's nothing wrong with that, that's fine—but then you're going to be subject to being thought to be ivory-tower and not really part of the public conversation. Or you're going to have, like, 'Dude, Where's My Reliable Symbolic Order?' as your paper title and be writing about The Sopranos and trying to be a hipster."

aarrgh, etc

daria g (daria g), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"ART STUDENT"

I CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ZONE (ex machina), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I find this largely American 'lawyers are evil' thing kind of weird. Did people really grow up seeing them as antichrists? Are they perceived as worse than businesspeople?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate when people do the ol' "playing games" thing wrt telephone calls & people wot you want to date. I hate the "don't call her right away, wait three days and tell her you've been busy" thing.

So awhile back I meet this girl, I like her a lot, she gives me her number and OH MY GOD I AM BUSY FOR THREE DAYS! Boy gets sick, must haul wood to make money to pay bill so water isn't shut off, must work late every day because cumguzzler hooked up machine wrong, etc. On the third day I call. I AM THAT GUY. FYUCK.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

wait 'til the heat of the presidential campaign.

nick but did you get the date?!??!!?!? omg curious minds must know!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the trick is not to despise anything!

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha ken

Nope. She gave me the polite call-back, but declined, saying she was going "out of town" with her brother. When I asked curiously "out of town where?" she said "out of town". She said she might call me something. I doubt it. Sad face.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummm, I've come to despise what I've become, is that close enough?

Huck, Monday, 19 July 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

this reminds me of:

"we have top men working on it."
"who?"
"top...men...."

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha "she might call me something" yeah that was supposed to be sometime but that's way funnier

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I occasionally find myself saying "proactive" and I just want to die.

quincie, Monday, 19 July 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM AN ART STUDENT WHO WORKS IN A LAW FIRM OMG WTF!??!?!?!

actually, a disturbingly large % of lawyers are some sorta failed artist or other. at least in NYC, anyway.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that staring at pollack and de koonig all day & trying to make sense of it IS pretty good training for learning to plow through turgid case/statutory/administrative law or boxes/computer screens fulla documents.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

That was mostly meant as a joke, really. I get a lot of flack when I tell fellow "artists" (used very loosely) that I work in a major law firm. But "artists" are idiots anyways.

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(xp)

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

what did you people have against lawyers?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

insider knowledge

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"you people"

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"actually, a disturbingly large % of lawyers are some sorta failed artist or other. at least in NYC, anyway"

Kind of like dictators?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Kind of like Subway sandwich artists?

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

JOHN ASHCROFT!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

all I can say about Ashcroft is that University of Chicago must have a shitty law school to graduate his sorry ass.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it's one of the best in the nation

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the trick to avoiding becoming what you despise is to despise what you once were

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

But that doesn't work at all!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

works for me

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It might stop it bothering you but it doesn't make any difference to whether or not you've become what you once despised.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

well the statement implies you find it despicable in the present tense.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I read (present tense 'read'!) as "We tend to become what we despise".

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

gotcha

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Read it" that should say.

I didn't consider parsing it the way you did until just now, which is weird.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey - I've just thought of something. If you read it your way then why did you invoke one's past self at all? It's not necessarily relevant to what one despises now.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why I'm doing this.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I just invoked the past self as something to focus one's natural self-loathing upon rather the your current actions.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah-ha.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

right now = exegesis of arcane defense contracting texts

also, i live in los angeles

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I've just realized that I'm sort of acting like I did in high school about some things recently, therefore I have become what I despite after all.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I despise dudes that dont have a job and just sit around listening to music all day taking a break occasionally by watching TV or eating a cheese sandwich.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a fashion-obsessed yuppie who's thinking of going into politics. Also I run a radio station but right now I'm using it to play the Black Crowes.

I am someone who requests relatively obscure songs by the Black Crowes on internet message boards at 8:45 in the morning.
