Who's gonna be in Edinburgh during Festival time?

If you are then please remember that - if you are not from the city - stop every few steps and remark upon how "cool" the various landmarks are (or better yet open a map). It doesn't matter that the streets are crawling with people and you will inevitably cause some kind of minor accident.

Aside from that, figured I'd ask the dear ILXors for a pint if you're in town.

The one thing that I'm pleased about, at moving away from Edinburgh, is not being there in August.

(although, OTOH, the good thing about August was that my local pub extended its closing time from 1am to 3am.)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am dreading the festival. I should be able to avoid most of it as I rarely venture into the old town these days. But the whole thing is just horrid.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm escaping Edinburgh for Berlin at the arse end of the festival.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to head up at some point during the festival to visit friends before they move back to canada. i dunno when though. i love edinburgh (it's where my mum was born & raised). one of my favourite european cities. email me c-man. if i do go i'd be up for a pint...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll drop you an email Rob.

Anyone else going to be there and grit their teeth as the various tourists make life hell?

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I live with tourists all the time, so my sympathies!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I will be escaping the dozy tourists in Dublin and heading over to Edinburgh for a weekend. Annoyingly, all the shows I want to see start between 20.30 and 22.30 so I won't get to see many of them. But I'm already booked in for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in the Assembly Rooms, and I reckon I'll book for Daniel Kitson as well. The rest I'll play by ear.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest will be a big hit because of the star power involved, but in general I hate theatre. I hate the sorts of people who tend to go to the theatre too. All haughty haughty accents.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Right. Well, at least I know I won't have to have a pint with you.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on man, why bother with the theatre? I hate all that "it stimulates me mentally"? Oh REALLY! I used to act and all the people who do act are pretentious, up their own arse morons. They couldn't stimulate a horny 18 year old with a copy of Playboy magazine let alone stimulate an audience.

I used to love acting in the theatre though. It's great fun. I have no grudge with people who love doing it. But as a spectator thing - why not see a movie instead? Movies have made theatre outdated.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

is the festival really that bad? i was quite looking forward to it, in fact i have a job working in one of the theatre box-offices. I've never been up here in august before though maybe I am being terribly naive. at least the pubs open late!

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And C-man still wonders why no one wants to have a pint with him...

(For your info, Calum, when someone says he's going to theatre, even though you'd hate it, the first thing you should say isn't: "Eww, I hate the folks who go to the theatre, they should DIE!!". There are informal rules to conversing with people, though you wouldn't probably know anything about them.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

My work should have eased by then. I won't be based on the Mound then either, so my wish to randomly kill people during my lunch-hour will be dramatically minimised.

Put up a FAP thread when you get somewhere on this and maybe I will be able to turn up. That is if the pub isn't shit.

___ (___), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

is the festival really that bad? i was quite looking forward to it, in fact i have a job working in one of the theatre box-offices. I've never been up here in august before though maybe I am being terribly naive

The festival would be great, if it weren't for all the tossers who perform in it, and the people from out of town who come to Edinburgh for that and - as observed above - random stopping in the street antics.

It's not as bad as people make out, but it certainly isn't far off. I have been known to be quite unfriendly to people handing out flyers who don't really understand that people live in Edinburgh, rather than it being their Amateur Dramatics holiday of a lifetime.

I take it back. It is exactly as bad as the people make out.

___ (___), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomos, I never said that people should die for liking theatre, I'm just basically feeling the same way the the fella above is. Two brilliant posts, better than I could have put it to be honest, pointing out what IS wrong with the fest. And the "amatuer dramatics holiday of a lifetime" is excellent. That will now join my vocabulary when describing the fest.

I'm dropping an email to some of you fine folks anyway. If you fancy a pint at least you have my email address and it would be nice to meet up.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I will be in Edinburgh.
I am not going for the festival.
I will be drinking.
I won't be drinking with Calum.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop it, you're breaking my heart.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am coming over for the festival, but I promise to do my best to stick to the Pleasance Courtyard and stay out of everyone's way.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Pleasance is crap this year, I am afraid. They haven't booked anyone good from what I have heard. Nice to drink in normally, but they have been under lots of pressure for noise for years, and I think this year they may have called it a day a bit (I hope I am wrong).

Good venue last year was the Spiegel Tent in George Square - a nice bierhaus in the square, with blankets and things for people to borrow. I liked it there - it felt like a festival.

I am in a bad mood with something else now - I will clarify my point. I am kind of confused how I ended up agreeing with Calum, and in a state of shock! There are just so many performers in shows who see it as a joint trip to Edinburgh - a lot of Uni footlights groups and stuff, and they do annoy me, whether I am wrong or not. At times it is really fun, but I have been here for eight years now and it has worn to being the occassional peak, and a lot of annoyance. I really wish everyone who comes to the festival was as considerate as a lot of people I meet, but it doesn't really hold up that way. I know this is a tarring with a brush, but....well, why not.

I can live fine with tourists in Edinburgh. It is when the population of the city increases by 25% or more with them that, strangely enough, it begins to bother. The random stopping in street isn't flyers - it is the endless supply of people who stop to look at something in front of you. Either I am exceptionally unfortunate and need a new walking strategy, or it happens to everyone!

Anyway - I hope everyone who visits enjoys it. And considers before they stop to admire a building, the likes of which are...everywhere (world heritage city, dontcha know, hence noone has sky as you aren't allowed dishes). And - if you are performing - don't flyer people in suits, clearly at work, for a 3.30pm show!. I am calm now.

___ (___), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

As someone working in the bar at the spiegeltent, may I just say: please tip. When i worked at C in Adam House last year I made a grand total of 30pence in three weeks. Bastards.

Anyway, maybe it isn't cool to say this, but as an embruh lad born and bred, I've always loved the influx of tourists. Then again, that might just be because the hot-tanned-spaniard-to-schemie ratio turns on its head.

And regarding the subpar lineup at the Pleasance - hasn't their svengali chap stepped down this year? Maybe that's why...

strophic (strophic), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

___ is OTM re annoying tourists who stop right in front of you when you're trying to walk past them.

All my neighbours in Edinburgh seemed to have Sky; then again, I did live on the Dumbiedykes estate.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Strophic, you don't usually tip in Scotland (or the UK). I worked in bars throughout university and got tipped once.

I don't live in Edinburgh, but I visit the city a lot and always have done. For all intents and purposes, I consider it home. Like many, I do dislike the rise in population and the knowledge that I can't walk from A to B without it taking a lot of time and involving a fair bit of problems. The flyers I just ignore. Some of the studenty street acts really piss me off. I remember three years ago two goth girls sat in the middle of A PUBLIC WALK WAY pretending to be dead while someone asked for money for them. They were "the end is nigh" or some such shit. I almost tripped over them, and so I softly prodded one girl with my umberella and said "this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen" very loudly. There are always crowds and crowds watching the street performers too, so it can be a hassle getting anywhere.

Princes Street is a nightmare too, invitably - especially with the stopping and starting although it is good to see the stereotype of the Japanese tourist with a camera lives on!! That always makes me chuckle, bless them.

I'll be covering the film fest, and I love that every year. I love being able to go to some cool concerts in Edinburgh too, instead of having to make the trek to Glasgow and worry about being beat up in the Barrowlands by some ned.

And, yes, if you've never been it is still the most beautiful city I've laid eyes on. I don't say that with any bias, it just honestly still makes me feel rather happy with my homeland. A lovely place. Especially by night.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

2046!!!!

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

is anyone up for 2046?

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year I was too lazy to go to any shows, so I did a feature on my website reviewing all the flyers I was handed. It got mixed feedback from people trying to google their own shows afterwards - some were very nice, some were "why is this twat saying my flyers are shit, and why are they the top google result for my show?"

I have considered getting flyers made for a fake show - pick a non-existant venue number at a fictitious address, and everything, and go around handing them out.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The last two years me and Bloke went with a friend of ours who lives in Edinburgh. He would buy tickets for us to see films, and we would pick the comedians. It was good, because we'd see films we would never normally see, and he'd see a bit of stand-up, which he would never normally see.

Sadly we'll miss all the festivals except the fringe this year. If anyone knows any good shows to see in the afternoon, post 'em here. I'm short on afternoon shows and they can sometimes be great.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Trish,

As a former stand up performer myself, the Stand Cafe (I've forgotten the address off hand) usually has a variety of good comedy acts. I don't know if he'll be there this year but my old mentor Allan Miller is still the funniest live act I've ever seen.

2046 - that's a film at the festival I believe. MY must see films this year are The Machinist, Trauma, The Motorcycle Diaries and Hero - but I'll see a lot more than that. Also, try and catch 70s classic O Lucky Man on the big screen if you can.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stand is on York Place, no?

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

me and cookie and cathy are up for a pint, with c-man, still.

c-man, I'd say any time you're in glasgow, next, drop me an e-line and we can arrange something, hopefully.

pete, let us know when you're up, too!!

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I was going to be in Glasgow this weekend for the Pete Doherty concert but cirumstances say otherwise. Honest, I'm rarely in the city - but I'm in Edinburgh virutally every weekend. Fancy a pint during festival time?

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be up for the last week, and will spend most time at Bert's Bar.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stand is on York Place, no?

Indeed it is. It has a second venue on St Andrews Street, which will be round to corner, on the road up to the square (near the bus station).

Simon Munnery (sp?) and Daniel Kitson are on there this year....

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I can manage a fap if it's before 27/8 which is when i go to Germany.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow there are a lot of us around Edinburgh for this. I'm aiming for Aug 20-22, but haven't even spoken to my friends there yet. Will do that tonight...

OK so I am a tourist but I promise to behave and not stop in the sidewalk (a huge pet peeve here in London too). Or maybe I can claim some sort of Edinburgh-cred because of my mum (although she did actually grow up in Linlithgow before moving to Edinburgh). It is indeed a beautiful city, and I can't wait to see it again.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Aug 21st for a proper FAP? DaveB when do you get there?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds entirely plausible. I don't know if I will make it due to one of the following reasons, however.

a) work
b) finally booking a holiday from work (which would be my first this year)
c) a blatant disregard for keeping a diary, agreeing to things and not turning up.
d) the selected pub is shite.

All of these are pretty equal. You can work on the pretend logic that I will turn up though.

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I get there on Aug 21st - I would recommend Bert's Bar because they do pie mash and gravy for rifdiculous cheap prices and it is absolutely gorgeous. Nice beer too. And an unobtrusive telly.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Berts bar the one at the West End of Princes Street, down the back lanes? I am pretty sure it is, but just want to check (sort of back off queensferry road, toward the cathedral)

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, there's one FAP then: Saturday August 21st, Bert's Bar, Edinburgh.
"I LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER"

(I don't know anything about Bert's but I trust Mr. B.)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wahoo - me OTM. Bert's bar is where I thought it was. I have been there before for a retirement do.

They do good pies. They do ales, and it is off the beaten track for Edinburgh. I am, however, wondering how old Dave B is now.

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Why I heart Berts

I am not a old man geezer. Is it possible to maybe make it Sunday? I have checked my trains and can get cheapy ticket but not get into Waverley until 9pm. Amd investigating going up Thursday too, so maybe say at some point that weekend, with date confirmed ASAP?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I also fancy a nice posh cup of tea and croque monsieur in Plaisir du Chocolat, or a big gay breakfast in the Blue Moon on Broughton St. They certainly used to have the best Sunday breakfasts, but I haven't been there for about five years, so I don't know if they still do.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

DaveB - good idea. I haven't confirmed anything yet either.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Best Restaurant in Edinburgh is Monster Mash. They do breakfast too. However, I always end up having sausage and mash.

It is my little paradise, and very cheap.

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There's two Bert's Bars in Edinburgh, one on William Street at the west end and another in Stockbridge. I like the one at the west end, i've never been to the Stockbridge one.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stockbridge one is the one I've been to.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in Galsgow on the 8th. Madchen has been apprised of my precise needs. (Bouze / film / pub quiz I believe).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Monster Mash is indeed v. good. The friendliest pub in Edinburgh, though, is probably the Auld Hoose on St. Leonards St.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the auld house opposite the lismore rugby club near the police station? The only pub i can think of at St Leonards is The Maltings.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bang on the mark, Leigh. The Maltings used to be a great pub (baisedness admission - I knew the folk who owned it). The Auld Hoose was alright, and is right opposite the Lismore.

Upsides of the Auld Hoose - has a darts board, opened later than the pub I used to work in so I could get a pint.

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

you do all know it changed ownership and, as far as i know, has inherited a semi-regular goffy crowd since last december...don't you ?

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My closest pubs are the Loch Inn and Scotties, which explains why i don't drink locally.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not fussy. I'll be press at the film fest so if I get the time I'd love to come along.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, yes, the appearance of the gothy crowd was when I started going there myself...

(although it was one of my closest pubs anyway)

(xpost)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin - hogmany last yr was the first time i had been there too - though i would have been back by now if i went out more than once every few months...some friends/acquaintances go every now and then

are you part of the mission/ascension/vain axis ?

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I have lots of friends who are. I've only been to the mission once myself.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

As of yesterday I am now going to be spending an extremely rushed and totally disorganised two days in Edinburgh, on Sat 7th and Sun 8th August.

Haven't booked any shows at all, frankly overwhelmed with the amount on offer, will probably mainly hang around the Pleasance though. All tips greatly appreciated!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I can no longer go to Edinburgh. Bummer.
Have fun y'all!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Wish I could be of help Charlie, but I only attend the film fest.

I guess all the hype this year is over Cuckoo's Nest, but I expect it now sold out.

C-Man (C-Man), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It is sold out. I will now shamelessly plug all my Irish comedy mates and recommend that you see Dara O'Briain, Andrew Maxwell or Colin Murphy. I also recommend Stewart Lee, Daniel Kitson, and Howard Read.

That's if you want stand up. I don't really know anything about anything else.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump.

I haven't killed anyone yet, and we are heading into the second week. this is quite an acheivement I think.

Festival doesn't seem quite so bad this year. so far.

___ (___), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I would beg to differ, it took us about 45mins to get from London Road to Newington Road on Saturday by bus, the traffic's just mental. Although getting on the bus as Easter Road was emptying out didn't help either.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 9 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I'm around tomorrow, so, I think, is Andrew F. Bit late for plans unless you're still checking ILX (in which case, try and get in touch - I've just friended you on Facebook so you can get my mobile if you don't have Andrew's) but, er, I'm guessing we will be hanging around Pleasance Courtyard for some time tomorrow late afternoon/evening. I have no idea what I am going to see at all, but we'll see.

would love & appreciate a local low-down on the festival & night life. somewhere to buy some records, maybe see some live music. this drunk australian dude i talked to the other night kept reassuring me that edinburgh was "the tits of the uk" and my hopes is high

I'm not a local but I've been to the Fringe festival twice (mainly theatre/stand-up comedy/performances), not sure if that's what you're after. If you're even vaguely into that kind of thing then Daniel Kitson's show is one of the things I'm most gutted about missing at the festival this year, he's bloody excellent, more of a stand-up/storyteller.

Don't know if you can download a copy of the Fringe guide, but if so it might be worth spending an hour with a highlighter pen and seeing what takes your fancy. No idea about nightlife or whatever, but it's not exactly short of pubs.
