A question for the ladies (and why not for gay men too).

A few days ago I spoke with a friend who had just been to Chicago for six months. For one reason or other, our conversation turned to penises. Before she went to the US, she had never been with a guy who was circumcised (circumcision is very rare in Finland), and she told me she'd found out she likes circumsized penises more than uncut ones. I know there's much debate going on about whether circumcision is good for the one to whom it's done to, for example if it decreases the sensitivity of the penis, but I was wondering what's the ladies view on this issue? Do you prefer it cut or uncut? Is there difference at all? Because I would imagine, once the penis goes to it's "proper place", it wouldn't be much different if it's circumcised or not. Is this a question of aesthetics only?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe she wants penises being put into her "improper place".

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew I was gonna get joke answers before any proper ones.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

improper penis insertion is no joke, dude.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never seen a circumsised penis in real life. I think I'd be a bit scared of the *nakedness* of it. But I can't really imagine it being any different when it comes to, um, the act.

Hanna (Hanna), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i much prefer the uncut variety, in fact i have a bit of a prejudice against the other sort.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen one either, Hanna, they *are* quite rare back here in the North, aren't they?

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jed, is there a reason for your preference?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't it just what you're used to? before i moved to london, i'd only, erm, met, one that was uncircumcised. and it surprised me, and to be honest i wasn't exactly sure what to do with it (sounds silly, but it looks very different, right?)

i guess i'm getting used to it, but it's certainly one of those cultural differences that people don't think about when moving to or from america...

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it looks better and it's more user friendly.... there are other reasons but it's too embarrasing to go into, sorry.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mind me for being ignorant, but I've always wondered why they still do it in America? Circumcision was originally done for hygiene reasons, but people shower regularly nowadays, don't they?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess i'm getting used to it, but it's certainly one of those cultural differences that people don't think about when moving to or from america...

the lack of Taco Bell in the UK would be the thing that would distress me the most.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought circumcision was originally done for religious reasons.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's one of those cases where something that was originally done for practical reasons has slowly metamorphosed into a religious practice.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

But most Americans aren't Jewish or Islamic, still.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it is indeed quite common in (north) america. we discussed this once back home and most guys i know (self included) are circumcised. i think the ratio in canada was around 50/50, but now tipped more in favour of circumcised. supposedly it is done for health reasons (less risk of infection from bacteria supposedly), with the added 'aesthetic' bonus.

the whole thing has mystified me too, actually. very weird. and there is the jewish connection that i admit total ignorance of - i think you are supposed to be circumcised (?)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i always thought it had religious implications as well, since the only uncut one i met was on a christian boy that was born in israel.

but all the rest i've ever seen have been. i think it's probably tradition, and the only people that don't do it have a specific reason.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i think doctors do it by default in north america unless otherwise requested...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet the doctors collect them and swap them like pokemon cards

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, or, erm, lord of the rings cards, i guess.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i always thought it had religious implications as well, since the only uncut one i met was on a christian boy that was born in israel.

Well, when Judaism was born in the Middle East, it was very practical to circumcise men for health reasons, especially in a climate like that. But as it often happens, what once was a practical rule was turned into a religious rule, to ensure that people obey it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Its really a turtleneck.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i know lots of gay guys that prefer uncircumcised though i havent seen any difference between the two once he's, ahem, up and running.

anthony, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never had any experience of a circumcised guy. I am the opposite to Colette in that I wouldn't know what to do with it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking as someone who was nearly circumcised but ended up not being, I kinda wish I had been, for various health/hygiene/practical/sex reasons. I think circumcised willies look nicer than uncut ones generally, but only when, uhm, "relaxed". When excited, they're all pretty much the same innit.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never had this mythical bacterial infection. Is there really something nasty that cripples uncircumcised men? Why don't we hear about it? OMG COCK-ROT COVERUP SHOCKAH

x-post - seems Charlie may be the person to answer this question.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't anwer the question as I don't have a penis or indeed know anyone with a circumcised penis. Surely if you keep yourself clean properly you (royal) shouldn't have any problems.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

nono, never been infected, touch wood (so to speak - he said wood etc), but have had many and varied Really Horrible Things happen in my time as an active user of, er, a foreskin - think condoms full of blood, or on reflection don't. Also, I have reports from cut folk that *certain things* are a whole lot more pleasurable for all concerned when you've had the chop.

Anyone know anyone who's been circumcised in adult life, and can thus compare and contrast in some way?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't circumcision an incredibly outdated and barbaric act of mutilation on a person who hasn't consented?

Have a butchers at THIS.

Really? From what I've heard, the "knob" of the penis may turn *less* sensitive for circumcised men, because it is in constant touch with your undies.

Perhaps they tell you different things in countries where they circumcise men than in countries where they don't...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that part would have to de-sensitise to some respect otherwise just walking would be a nitemare surely!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? From what I've heard, the "knob" of the penis may turn *less* sensitive for circumcised men, because it is in constant touch with your undies.

This, in my experience, would be extremely handy!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok! Emabarrasing story with cool payoff coming right up.

I'm circumcised. When I was born my cocktube was fused together, leading to the horrible situation that my body was rapidly filling up with urea. Not the best of situations. So I got snipped as part of an operation where they basically created a passage, from what I hear using a very hot thin piece of metal (although that might just be my dad trying to give me the, erm, willies). Cross yo legs, boys.

The upshot of which is that the muscles etc. around that region compensated hugely. I don't mean that the Wang turned into a monster, merely that from an early age I could urinate over twice my height. A popular childhood game around our way consisted of things like "Let's see if Porl can clear that greenhouse". Happy memories.

People have pointed out that circumcision started off in hot Middle-Eastern countries, but noone's mentioned that they tend to be rather dusty, sandy places. Getting sand caught under there really can't be much fun, unless you're a complete masochist.

Well at least it's not like having yr vag sewn up.

I saw a site recently by a woman who has hers pinned shut with big, thick piercings. It had lots of close-up photographs, and left me feeling rather ill.

one year passes...
I have traveled the usa and seen all types in my years. I have had intercourse with almost 50 men, not because I am a whore but because I enjoy sex I have now been with the same man for ten years and four children later we still have sex 7x a week. But in answer to the question when I was 15 I had my first uncircumsized man and I came so hard and fast at first I had no idea what was happening. I do believe since he could slide around in his shell there was less unpleasant friction. So I enjoy un more but in the end (no pun intended) if some one knows you well it does not really matter becuase they can learn to make you go.

My stepdad's been working on a study that seems to indicate circumcised men are at lower risk for contracting HIV: http://www.hivdent.org/medical/medMCRH1005.htm (that's just a short summary of the really lengthy paper; if yer interested in reading more, Google "Adri@n Pur3n" and "foreskin". And did I feel weird Googling my stepdad's name and "foreskin"? Why yes, yes I did). Story coming out in the New York Times in a few weeks, too.

As for my personal preference, appearance-wise I probably prefer circumcised, but not all that bothered, and I can't say I've ever *felt* a difference.

My first boyfriend thought he was circumsized, and he difinitely wasn't. It turned out he thought circumsision was cutting off the glans! Ack! We did a survey among all the guys we knew and 21 were circumsized, only one was not. We tried to get him to show it to us but he was understandably uncomfortable.

I can't say there's really a difference inside, but I like uncircumsized better because they're easier to play with in other ways and just a lot cuter.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

JTS (JTS), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Gah, that was rather unclear wasn't it? Okay, so he had no foreskin but was somehow under the impression that he was not circumsized. Knowing some skin got removed during the cirsumsision process, he looked at his own penis and assumed the only skin to be removed at the front was the glans itself. So he figured circumsized men had their little heads cut off, which is astonishing.

I read an article once about a baby born with some serious skin condition that required a skin graft, and they took baby foreskins and made the graft out of them.

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 1 May 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

My boyfriend knew this weird guy who was really pissed off that his parents had circumsized him and apparently he wore this weird stretching device all the time trying to restretch the skin around his glans into a new foreskin. I can't imagine that this contraption was terribly comfortable. I think there's a kind of grassroots movement about this issue led by similar angry, disenfranchised folks.

improper penis insertion is no joke, dude.

I once had a house-cleaning job for an elderly bachelor. He had a Masters and Johnson-type clinical sex book in his bathroom. It had a story in it about the sexual misadventures of some naive newlyweds. The groom, in his ignorance, had tried and tried to insert his penis into his bride's urethra. By the time they finally went to a doctor to find out why they were having such a difficult sex life, the opening of her urethra was dilated to the size of, hmm, a fat fountain pen???? Ouch.

I'm not circumcised and I've always been against it. Now i'm a little less sure. However, when you get to the reasons why circumcision helps prevent AIDs and STDs at the end, as usual, it seems to boil down to having your penis mutilated so you can wash less & visit prostitutes. Here's an idea; if you wash your cock properly and don't visit prostitutes that might also stave off cervical cancer in your partner and genital warts in yourself?

I may be totally wrong here of course, and should get myself snipped for Em's sake, but I'm a little cynical.

I can't make my face turn into a heart (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 19 July 2009 06:43 (sixteen years ago)

I'd guess the risk for HIV and other STDs extends beyond prostitutes and their johns.
